2 Things to Consider Below are three main factors that should be considered when choosing a Pilot size/style for your design. We offer different sizes/styles in order to provide the best possible solution based on your part design and tool application. Stock Thickness / Pilot Diameter Stock Thickness in relationship to the Pilot Diameter is important for 2 main reasons. 1. To provide enough locating surface area, based on land length and diameter, between the pilot and the stock to effectively locate the stock. 2. To provide a robust assembly that reduces the potential of the Pilot assembly being damaged during common mis-hits / mis-feeds where the pilot is required to pierce and/or form the stock. The Ejector Pin style should be the preferred option whenever possible. It is more robust because the Pilot body is fully supported in the Pad/Window. Style: Ejector Pins Ejection Style OR Style: Round Stripper For Thin / Soft Stock - The Round Stripper style will provide a better stripping condition by providing more contact surface between the stripper and the stock. Style: In Pad - with Fasteners Mounting Configuration Style: In Window Used when mounting directly in a pad without a window. Retained with Fasteners. OR Used when a window is mounted to the pad. 4 Usage Guidelines: Ejector Pin Style for Heavy Duty Stock Stock Thickness to Pilot Diameter Pilot Dia. Max Stock Thickness Pilot Dia. 10mm 13mm 16mm 20mm Max Stock Thickness 1.9mm 2.5mm 3.2mm 3.8mm Receiving Hole Clearance Requirement Clearance minimizes the forces subjected on the Pilot and tooling during a Mis-hit situation, the hole below the pilot allows the material to extrude, rather than creating a pinch trim situation. We recommend that you use our Standard recommended diameters below to keep your design and machining process simple. 5 Usage Guidelines: Round Stripper Style for Thin/Soft Stock Stock Thickness to Pilot Diameter Pilot Dia. Max Stock Thickness Pilot Dia. 10mm 13mm 16mm Max Stock Thickness 1.0mm 1.5mm 2.0mm Receiving Hole Clearance Requirement Clearance minimizes the forces subjected on the Pilot and tooling during a Mis-hit situation. The hole below the pilot allows the material to extrude, rather than creating a pinch trim situation. Due to thin stock, we recommend that the clearance per side is equal to the stock thickness. This allows for adequate clearance during a mis-hit while still supporting the stock during normal running conditions. Clearance Hole Diameter Formula: Pilot Diameter + (Stock Thickness x 2) Testing was done to ensure each pilot diameter could handle the worst case scenario that was still within our recommendations. This was done using high strength stock at the max thickness with a mis-hit of a half of a hole, thus subjecting all of the forces against the pilot in one direction. Clearance for Stripper and Spring The Round Stripper Style Pilot Assembly is for use with Thin / Soft Stock only. Due to its Body not being supported adjacent to the Pilot Tip, it is less robust than the fully supported Ejector Pin Style Pilot Assembly. 6 Pilot Installation Instructions Pad Locating / Fastener Retaining 1. Insert Pilot Assembly into pocket or Reamed Hole - Ensure the assembly is seated on the shoulder prior to installing the fasteners - If installation requires more than a light press fit, stop installation, remove pilot, and check that the pocket/ream is within proper machining tolerances *Do Not Use the Fastener to Pull the Pilot Down Into the Bore or Ream Window Locating / Window Retaining 1. Insert Pilot Assembly into Window - Ensure the assembly is seated on the shoulder prior to installing the window - If installation requires more than a light press fit, stop installation, remove pilot, and check that the bore is within proper machining tolerances 2. Install Window in Tool - If window is larger in size, install window with care as to not damage the Spring/Stud that protrudes from the window 2. Install Fastener(s) / Lock Washer(s) / Flange Machining Gages Available To ensure your Pilot Locating Bore is machined within proper tolerance, use Go/NoGo Machining Gages available from Standard Lifters. Cost is around $14-$20 per gage, and is an inexpensive investment to ensure your machining department is able to measure and hold proper locating bore tolerances. Pad Locating / Window Retaining 1. Insert Pilot Assembly into Reamed Hole - Ensure the assembly is seated on the shoulder prior to installing the fasteners - If installation requires more than a light press fit, stop installation, remove pilot, and check that the ream is within proper machining tolerances 2. Install Window over Pilot Assembly - If window is larger in size, install window over Pilot with care as to not damage the stripper or spring Engineering Data - Pilot Assemblies - Pg. 6
