54 SUSTAINABILITY WOOD PROTECTS THE CLIMATE The CO concentration in the earths atmosphere has risen by over 25 % since 1850 and the temperature has increased by 0,7 degrees celsius. The consequences are dramatic, drought, tidal waves, floods and cyclones, during the climate change convention in Rio the parties agreed to a worldwide reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately exactly how we can achieve this goal has still not been clearly planned, can we no longer save our climate? or do we already have a solution? A large part of the solution could be forestry managment: Hans-Carl von Carlowitz began using the term sustainability in forestry management back in Sustainability means responsibly managing the resources which are available - not harvesting more trees than can be planted, this way of thinking needs to be cherished for generations to come to be successful, a tree requires decades if not centuries to grow into a usable source for wood. Osmo has been supporting this way of thinking for many years and incorporates the high FSC -System standards for certain products. Wood is a natural renewable resource which, if we use it responsably, will be available for centuries to come and long after the planets oil reserves have been exhausted. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the environment and permenantly store it within them, 1 m³ of wood can store up to one ton of carbon dioxide, this is later released back into the atmosphere after the tree dies and begins to rot. In forests which are not commercially managed the trees die and release the CO 2 back into the atmosphere, whereby trees in forests which are commercially managed (where the wood is proccessed) store the CO 2 permenantly. The proccessing of trees into wood for products such as solid wood or engineered flooring retain the stored CO 2 -permenantly removing it from the atmosphere, meaning that resposibly managed sustainable forestry can have a positive effect on the worlds CO 2 -balance. Wood stores CO 2 effectively which, thanks to its many uses, is perfect for replacing many other materials which damage the environment. As long as we understand and respect the message and thoughts which Hans-Carl von Carlowitz gave us and ensure that we continue planting more trees than we harvest, forests will absorb and store more CO 2 from the atmosphere they release. Its up to us: Wood is great for both us and the environment, help us to help our climate. 54

56 SORTING SORTING HARDWOOD Select The flooring is very uniform in structure and tone. Pin knots of up to 5 mm may occur. Natureal Natureal colour tones and harmonic knot patterns. Marked This sorting is much more vivid in tone and structure and contains many typical natureal features found in wood such as brown core and knots. Rustic A lively spirited wood with all the typical wood characteristics, all in all very vibrant. Life Lively natural wood sorting with splint wood and knots etc. SOFTWOOD A - Grade The natural knot features determine the overall character of the wood. B - Grade Is rustic in character, has a pronounced colouration, knot features and typical wood characteristics such as cracks e.g. A / B - Mixed sorting Plane falling, around 60 % A- and 40 % B - Sorting mixed together (see above). As such it is susceptible to colour and structural variation; the quantity of typical wood characteristics such as surface cracks, knots etc. also varies according to the wood type and grade you choose. Despite careful inspection by our expert team of wood professionals, it is impossible to rule out some variation across grades. As long as this does not exceed 5 % of the total quantity of wood ordered, this will not be considered grounds for complaint. mistakes, in the standing height of planks which are not obvious to the naked eye are not classed as a cause for claim. These are in accordance with general practice in the parquet industry and must, especially by solid wood, be accepted. 56

57 WOOD CHARACTERISTICS WOOD CHARACTERISTICS Osmo wood flooring Treated with Osmo Polyx -Oil has an extremely hard-wearing surface which more than meets the demands placed on it in an average home. Durability Also depends on the hardness of the specific wood. The table shows all the available timber varieties and their relative hardness. The higher the score (at an aver age wood humidity of 12 %), the harder and more durable the wood. Colouration Light wood species may darken when exposed to light, dark wood species may lighten over the years.
