1 Cover the wing trailing edge and the aileron leading edge with strapping tape as shown. The aileron hinges are done using strapping tape on the top and bottom surfaces of the ailerons as shown. Make sure you allow enough down movement of the ailerons.
2 obstacles. Check one last time the position of the Centre of Gravity and the servos movement before you launch the model. Ask for assistance for the launch. Then trim the model in flight: the PSS must fly straight, but with the nose pointing down slightly as it goes into wind. Next step is to check the Centre of Gravity airborne: do a 60 degrees dive and release the sticks on your transmitter: If the model dives even steeper, you will need to add some weight at the front of the fuselage. If the model wants to pull up, there is too much weight at the front and you will need to either add some at the rear of the fuselage (not advised) or remove some at the front. For the first flights, always turn into wind, not towards the slope. Aerobatics: The P51 Mustang loops and rolls with ease (to help with inverted flight, push your elevator trim slightly forward, inverted flight will then require less input on the sticks). Combat: The P51 Mustang has been designed for combat: it is strong enough not to break when other models would. Please beware of the crowd when flying and remain in control of the model at all times Landing: Come into the wind, making sure you are not too far off the slope. The P51 Mustang can be slowed down a lot... We wish you many hours of happy flying with your new model.
3 Run all the wires in a slot cut with a hobby knife and enlarged with a soldering iron. Once all the wiring is done, cover it with strapping tape. If you are not using a computer radio, use a Y lead to link both aileron servos. ***** Throw ***** Elevator: mm Ailerons: + 15 mm, - 10 mm or more for extreme flights. Check that all controls operate satisfactorily before gluing the aileron servos in. You can use a Hot Glue gun and cover the servo with a band of strapping tape (cut a hole for the servo arm). ***** Centre of Gravity ***** To obtain the correct Centre of Gravity, you might have to add some lead in the nose. The CG should be located at 130mm from the wing leading edge, measured at the root. C.G = 130 mm 6/ Flying For the first flights, you must ask for help from an experienced flyer if you have never flown at the slope. Although light weight, the model can become a dangerous projectile if it goes out of control. Choose a day when the wind is blowing moderately at around 15mph, on a clear slope with no
4 Make a 1cm deep slot above the elevator to fit the rudder. Make sure it is straight (in the fuselage s axis) and square with respect to the elevator. Glue the rudder with any of the advised glue. In order to help you align the elevator, you can draw the rear of the fuselage s shape on the Coroplast.. It is advised to sand the whole elevator so that the glue as well as the paint have a good grip on it. There is no need for strapping tape on the rudder and elevator. 4/ Fixing the wing You will need to glue the wing to the fuselage last, after the correct Centre of Gravity was achieved! Glue the wing to the fuselage with one of the advised glues, making sure it is square to the fuselage. 5/ Radio installation Cut 2 holes on the wing s bottom surfaces to fit the ailerons servos. The servos should be a tight fit, a fair amount of pressure should be applied to push them in, so you must cut the wells 0.5mm smaller than the servos outer dimensions. It is good (but not compulsory) to have the servo arm perpendicular to the servo in its neutral position. This reduces torsionnal forces. Standard servos can be completely buried due to the wing section used. BEWARE if you are not using a computer radio that the servos movement must be opposite. You can now screw the horns on the ailerons and cut the rod to size (use a Z bend). Cut a servo wells at the front of the fuselage for the elevator servo. Use a semi flexible rod (Sullivan type) running from the servo at the front of the fuselage to the elevator to allow elevator s movement. Locate the receiver and receiver battery at the front of the fuselage (position the battery to allow correct Centre of Gravity to be achieved see picture).
5 the trailing edge of the wing (see drawing!). Cut them using a Hobby knife fitted with a new blade. Use the aileron included in the kit and draw it on the wing s trailing edge. Do this for both halves. Now cut the aileron as drawn on the wing and replace it with the balsa aileron. You will need to cut the new trailing edge (or sand the balsa aileron) to an angle to allow down aileron movement. Hinge the ailerons as shown on the last drawing. Model s nose 7 cm Aileron = 50 cm 3/ Tail surfaces Sand the Coroplast tail surfaces with Grit paper. Before fixing the elevator, you will have to make your own transmission piece (for the 2 elevator halves), using some 20cm of 2mm piano wire. You must cut 11cm of this piano wire and bend it to 90 degrees. Each arm of the U must be 35mm long. Once built, the U piano wire can be pushed in the coroplast without drilling it. Just push it each side simultaneously. Glue the elevator in the slot that was factory cut at the rear of the fuselage, using one of the advised glues. Make sure it is square to the fuselage and parallel to the wing.
6 2/ The wing Glue the spars in the slot that was factory done on the wing. Glue the wing halves together, making sure you build some dihedral in. The dihedral is built in the root, which should help getting the right amount of dihedral, or alternatively, the bottom of the left wing tip by the spar should be 8cm high when the right wing is laying flat You can use any of the glues advised above. Then glue the wing joiner in its slot that was factory fitted. Once the glue is dry, you can sand the leading edge of the wing so that the leading edge has a nice round shape. Also sand the wing s bottom and top surfaces (with 400 grit sandpaper) in order to remove the EPP hair left on the wing and get the strapping tape to stick to the EPP. Sand the root to flatten the wing and allow it to seat comfortably on the fuselage. You can now start reinforcing the wing halves with strapping tape. Cover each half wing (top and bottom surfaces) with strapping tape (it is easier to lay 70cm of tape than 138cm!). The strapping tape must be parallel to the Trailing Edge, and you must start from the Trailing Edge onwards. Do so until you get to the Leading Edge, overlapping the previous layer by 5mm. The Leading Edge should be reinforced with an extra layer of strapping tape. Cutting and hinging the ailerons The wing must be fully covered with strapping tape! 7 1/ The fuselage You should start the building with the fuselage Cut a 50mmx50cm wide sand paper sheet (that you can reinforce with strapping tape on its back). In order to remove all the square angles and achieve a nice and round shape, pull the sand paper band (120 grit to start with followed by finer grit) from side to side as shown on the picture. PSS decoration: We have used several methods to cover and decorate our models. You can either cover the model with strapping tape and then cover it with Solartex (advised) or paint the model first, then cover it with strapping tape. Should you choose to paint your model: You will need to carefully select the paint, since not many of them give satisfactory results with strapping tape (paint tends to come off). We therefore strongly advise acrylic paint (water paint) for the decoration of your model and before covering it with strapping tape. To paint the Coroplast control surfaces, make sure you sand them before applying any paint. The fuselage must then be fully covered with fibre reinforced strapping tape. You must proceed symmetrically: - cover the sides (one layer), including the wing seat. - cover the bottom (one layer) - cover the nose (one layer) - cover the top from front to back (so that s 2 layers all together on the nose) Should you choose Solartex (or others) to cover your model: To come.
