3 Unpacking To unpack your new polishing lathe, first remove the screws from the bottom of the wooden crate, lifting up the crate from the pallet. Lift the unit off the pallet base. We recommend you store the crate and in the event that you should ever need to return the polishing lathe for service. NOTE: Once you have removed the screws that affix the top of the crate to the crate base, you can easily fold the crate for storage. Electrical Connection Your new 2-station polishing lathe requires only a standard 115V 60 Hz outlet to operate. As with any electrical device, be sure to place the lathe in an area of the laboratory away from water and all other liquid sources to avoid accidental electrical shock. Operation To start your polishing lathe, push the green switch located in the upper right corner of the cabinet to the ON position. This will light the switch, illuminate the two halogen work area bulbs and provide power to the rest of the unit. Next, turn ON the green switch located to the left side of the polishing lathe s cabinet. This will start the exhaust motor. You are now ready to start the polishing lathe. To activate the polishing lathe s 2-speed motor, turn the black ignition switch located in the center of the unit just above the lathe s motor to the No. 1 position (1700 RPM) and then, if desired, to the No. 2 position (3400 RPM) for highspeed operation. IMPORTANT: It is recommended to always follow this procedure when the operator wishes to work at maximum speed. Do not switch directly from 0 (off) to the 2 position as unnecessary motor wear may occur. Furthermore, rapid changes from high to low speed may accelerate motor wear. It is therefore recommended to turn the lathe s ignition switch from high-speed (2) to the OFF position (0) and wait approximately 20 seconds prior to turning the ignition switch to the lowspeed (1) position. If these steps are routinely followed, your new polishing lathe will only require minimal maintenance for many years to come. Maintenance CLEANING It is always recommended to maintain a clean work area. This is easily accomplished as both the non-corrosive splash bins and the plexiglas visors can be readily removed for cleaning. The stainless steel work surface of the polishing lathe eliminates rusting and provides rapid clean-up of this area as well. NOTE: Always use a soft cloth when cleaning the plexiglas visors. This will prevent unnecessary scratching from occurring that could impair your visibility while working. 3

4 LUBRICATION The polishing lathe s special design requires only minimal care. A simple semi-annual oiling is all that is needed. This procedure is accomplished by removing the 2 black screws found on the motor s flanges. Fill the oil reservoir with electric motor oil and then reinsert the screws. FILTER CHANGE This unit is equipped with a very large polyester filter bag which filters particles as small as 10 microns. Due to its large capacity, it requires only minimum maintenance. When the aspiration potential of the unit has been reduced or when the filter is 1/3 full, it is recommended to change the filter at this time. To change the filter (#65368P6), first unplug the unit to avoid any possible electric shock. Next, remove both the cabinets cover and filter tank cover. Lift the filter bag with its support out of the filter tank and loosen the screw which tightens the filter clamping band around the filter. Remove the used filter and replace it with a new filter using the reverse procedure. NOTE: Pay special attention that the filter s border is completely secured just below the clamping band before tightening the clamp. Replace the filter in the unit and apply the filter tank cover. Be sure the cover completely covers the tank to guarantee maximum aspiration potential. (#65368P9), remove the unit s cover, loosen the retaining knob, remove the lamp spring and washer and lift the lamp out of the lamp-holder. The lamp bulb is replaced by pulling the bulb out of the lamp socket and inserting a new bulb. Reinsert the lamp on the inside of the unit and fix into place with the spring and washer. Retighten the retaining knob and fasten the cover back on the unit.
