Black Ash Basket Preparation
What will I learn? Learn how to recognize and harvest a healthy black ash tree. Learn how to prepare material to construct a black ash basket.
Black ash baskets have been constructed here in the Michigan area for many years. Some basket weavers claim the best way to learn about the basket process is from another person rather than a book. Most basket weavers understand the importance of personal one on one instruction. The class size is limited for your maximized learning experience. Formal education cannot instruct this traditional artwork, but rather this is another form of oral tradition. The basket weaving teacher honors this tradition and continue to embrace the old time learning style. Many basket weavers have learned from family members and recall playing with the scrap splints as a child. The basket classes offered now creates this opportunity once again so another generation can grow up recalling fond memories from this social activity.
Where to find a healthyblack ash tree Black ash grows best in wet swampy areas. A A healthy tree can be harvested any time of year.
Spiritual experience Be prepared to walk through areas like this one here. Don t forget to take the time to enjoy the beauty and wild life. Tobacco is taken into the area and offered.

Searching for Black ash in the Attention and respect for the surrounding area is a traditional concept embraced by local people. Sometimes looking for the proper tree can take hours or days swamp
A healthy tree can be recognized because it will have: A A healthy crown of limbs and leaves. Long straight growth with no knots or branches. Look out for blemishes on the bark.
Healthy leaves When a tree is healthy the leaves will reflect the species easily. In the Autumn time the leaf as well as the stem will fall.
Just because the leaves may be eaten somewhat doesn t mean this tree is un healthy. Actually the black ash tree is quite resilient. Now with the threat of the EAB basket makers are watching closer than ever for these signs of damage.
Finding the proper tree Looking close at the bark of the tree will help the basket maker determine if the tree will provide the materials needed for the projects in mind. Notice how the black ash tree has a more flakey type bark.
Tap a wedge out of the tree to check growth rings If the growth rings are at least a nickel size in width, that tree with yield quality splints. This tree wants to be baskets and will be respected for the gifts it has to offer us.
Talk with the tree and offer a gift Spend a little time with the tree through prayer and meditation. Tobacco offering at the base of the tree is a good way to show respect for the Creators creations.
Cut around the entire tree When cutting down a tree a splice cut completely around the tree ensures the splints wont get damaged. Determine where the tree will fall and cause the least amount of damage with the surrounding foliage growths rings wont be torn up.
Cut as many lengths as possible. Careful to use all the parts of the tree is a good way to show respect for the tree that is giving its life for us to make baskets. The upper part of the tree could be used for handle and rims for larger baskets.
Working together Cooperation with family and other basket makers can make this work enjoyable.
Ancient ways today Today Native American people are still harvesting black ash for baskets. There are no short cuts for hard work.
Peeling the bark Using a draw knife to peel away the area to be pounded. Once the bark is peeled up you need to work the log until finished.
Hold the log steady Making two wedges to hold the log steady for pounding will make the long tedious job as easy as possible. The wedge area cradles the black ash log.
Measure the width of splints Use a knife cut the end of the log. When the end of the log is pounded with the back of the ax this area will curl up.
Using the back of the ax Pounding the growth ring is done with the back of an ax. Remember to let the ax work harder than you and make each hit count.
Pounding to break away growth rings 6 6 to 10 growth rings requires uniform and consistent pounding.
Careful not to pound to hard If you pound to many times in one area the wood fibers will be broken. If not pounded hard enough the splints will become tattered as they are pulled up.
Pounding every inch the entire length of the log Accurate hits takes practice. An average log is about 6 foot long and all of it needs to be pounded to bring up all the weaving material.
No short cuts for hard work Native people from this area have been working black ash logs this way for many years. Not much has changed over the years, its still hard work but rewarding work as well.
Separation from the log Once the splints come up from the log we will be ready for the next part of preparation process. Remember preparation is about 75% of the basket making.
Storage of the unused portion of the log A A trench can store the log and the earth keeps it moist enough to work it another day. A A log can be stored up to three months this way. Completely buried the log can last one year.
Splitter This is the devise that is be used to hold the individual splints still while splitting each growths ring.
Getting ready to split Each splint needs to be trimmed on the sides to ensure it will split effectively. Each splint is fed through the hole on the side to start the splitting.
Splitting the splints Splicing through 1/2 growth and folding over to find the middle to pull apart. Splitting each growth ring takes strong fingers and patience.
Careful to keep even pressure It takes practice and patience to split one year of growth that has been pounded up. If it gets thin then pull down on the opposite side to compensate and get even thickness again.
Smooth as satin The sides of the growth ring that has been split are very smooth. The sides that were growing next to each other have a rough side.
Double splitting This splint has been split once and is being split again. This process takes skill through practice and patience.
Shaving the splints Once the splints have been pounded up and split, the shaving process can take place. Here we see how the rough side of the splint is shaven away to make both side smooth and satin like.
Shavings The shavings from the rough side are useful in fire starting. Here we see a handful that will be used for fire starting and therefore showing respect for all of the tree that gave its life.
75% is now done Now the preparation work is done, the splits can be stored for long periods of time. On the average Renee and one other person working together can process an entire log in about 36 hours. As you can see experience is the best teacher but we hope this presentation helps you understand the beginning process of creating beautiful baskets that will last for several generations.
