3 In 1934, a congregation from Defiance Ohio met with Erie Sauder, a local woodworker, to discuss wood furnishings for their newly renovated worship environment. Erie agreed to guide them through the process of selecting the furniture that best suited their needs and then produced the furniture to their specifications. After completing the job, Mr. Sauder felt such passion customer satisfaction still guide us each and every day. To date, we have served the furniture needs of over 30,000 congregations like our neighbors in Defiance. Comfort plays a vital role in making any decision related to seating. We offer a variety of options that not only provide comfort, but great quality as well. Choose from conventional or High Resiliency (HR) foam. The Indentation Force Deflection (IFD) indicates the load bearing capacity of the foam. The larger the number, the more force it takes to compress the foam. Too little force allows someone to bottom out, while too much can give a stiff seating experience. HR is a change to the initial foam manufacturing process to add support, comfort and resilience or bounce to the foam. HR foam by nature is a denser product but has a lower IFD. This combination allows for some additional "give" to the foam resulting in a bit softer feel than conventional foam but helps prevent "bottoming out". If you, your architect, or your designer have specific designs in mind, share them with your Sauder Worship Seating representative and we will create detailed drawings of your concept. Once the drawing s meet your needs, our seasoned craftsmen will work hard to make your ideas come to life. 18 Appendix People Won't Sit the Way You Think They Will When you're at the planning stages of building a new church, or replacing pews in your existing building, you'll want to know how many people your new space will be able to seat. First you'll need to answer this question: how much space will are you going to allow each person to take up? According to code, a 15-foot (180") pew will fit ten people. That s sitting shoulder-to-shoulder for the entire length of the pew. According to research on the way people actually sit, a 15-foot (180") pew will fit only seven people. Building Code Requirements Building code, which is what architects and builders are required to use to determine seating capacity, says to allow 18" of seating per person. To put this into perspective, think about how much room you have in a coach seat of an airplane. Regulation seats actually give you 19" per person. That's pretty close to the person next to you!
