Failure to follow all instructions listed below, may result in electrical shock, fire and/or serious personal injury. NOTE: This stationary tool has been manufactured in accordance with the applicable standards and equipment safety legislation. When using electrical appliances, it is important to take safety precautions to avoid possible injury and damage. For that reason, you should carefully read and store these instructions so that this information is available at all times. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS. Work Area 1. Keep your work area clean and well lit. Cluttered and dark areas invite accidents. 2. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presences of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks, which can ignite dust or fumes. 3. Keep bystanders, children and visitors away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to loose control. Electrical Safety 1. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord to carry the tools or pull the plug from the outlet. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Replace damaged cords immediately. Damaged cords increase the risk of electrical shock. 2. Disconnect the Tool From the Power Supply. When not in use, prior to maintenance and during sand paper installation, disconnect machine tools of all kinds from the power supply. Personal Safety 1. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use tool while tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. 2. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry. Contain long hair. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry or long hair can be caught in moving parts. 3. Avoid accidental starting. Be sure switch is off before plugging in. Carrying tools with your finger on the switch or plugging in tools that have the switch on invites accidents. 4. Remove adjusting keys or switches before turning the tool on. A wrench or a key that is left attached to a rotating part of the tool may result in personal injury. 5. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Proper footing and balance enables better control of the tool in unexpected situations. 6. Use safety equipment. Dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection must be used for appropriate conditions. 7. Protect your eyes. Always wear eye protection during power tool operation. Always use guards and eye shields. The operation of any power tool can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes which can result in severe eye damage. Safety eyewear is available at your local hardware or home center store. Everyday eyeglasses only have impact resistant lenses, they are not safety glasses. ACCESSORIES WARNING: RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool, may become hazardous when used on another tool. WARNING: RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY. The use of any other accessories then polishing or buffing wheels is not recommended and could result in serious injury or damage to the bench grinder. 3 Sharpening Twist Drill Bits NOTE: Drill bits are best sharpened on a sharpening jig available at most hardware stores, but can be "dressed up" on your bench grinder. 1. (SEE FIGURE 8) Locate the tool rest with a V-groove. The V-groove is correctly angled to accommodate most drill bits. 2. Begin on one side of the point at the existing angle, then twist the bit while maintaining a constant angle with grinding surface. 3. Sharpen only the tip. Be sure to maintain the original cutting edge angle for the drill bit to preform successfully after sharpening. NOTE: This technique requires considerable practice. Take your time and make a few "dry runs" first with the grinder off. 9 Figure 8 Tool Rest MAINTENANCE WARNING: RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Such preventative safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally. Care of Grinding Wheel 1. Keep the grinder clean and clear of all debris for best and safest performance. 2. In normal use, grinding wheel may become cracked, grooved, rounded at the edges, chipped out of true or loaded with foreign material. Cracked wheels should be replace immediately. While any of the other conditions can be remedied with a dressing tool. Dressing a Grinding Wheel 1. Select a suitable silicon carbide stick type dresser (available at most hardware stores.) 2. Using the tool rest move the dresser forward until it touches the high point of the face on the wheel. Dress the wheel by moving the dressing tool back and forth. Repeat this process until face of wheel is clean and clear from debris and corners are square. 3. After dressing, adjust the distance between the tool rest and wheel to 1/16" or less. Wheel Replacement Replacement grinding wheel specifications: 1/2" Arbor (center hole) 6" diameter wheel (maximum of 3/4" wide) 1. Select a replacement grinding wheel with a safe rated speed at least as high as the "NO LOAD" RPM marked on your grinders nameplate. 2. Place the power switch to the "OFF" position and unplug bench grinder. 3. Remove and retain mounting hardware from grinding wheel. Note the existing sequence of mounting hardware. 4. Mount new grinding wheel, secure using hardware retained in step 3. Install hardware in reverse sequence noted in step 2. Do not over tighten wheel nut. 5. New grinding wheels may require dressing before making them round. Reference the manufactures instructions to make new grinding wheel ready for use. See instructions for "Dressing a Grinding Wheel" in the maintenance section of this manual. Tool Use and Care 1. Use clamps or other practical way to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by hand or against your body is unstable and may lead to loss of control. 2. Avoid Injury from jams, slips or thrown parts. Make sure all clamps and locks are tight and no parts have excessive play. 3. Do not force tool. Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed. 4. Do not use tool if switch does not turn it on or off. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. 5. Disconnect the plug from the power source before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing the tool. Such preventative safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally. 6. Store idle tools out of reach of children and other untrained persons. Tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. 7. Maintain tools with care. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained tools, with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. 8. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the tools operation. If damaged, have the tool serviced before using. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained tools. 9. Use only accessories that are recommended by the manufacturer for your model. Accessories that may be suitable for one tool, may become hazardous when used on another tool. SERVICE 1. Tool service must be preformed only by qualified repair personnel. Service or maintenance performed by unqualified personnel could result in a risk of injury. 2. When servicing a tool, use only identical replacement parts. Follow instructions in the Maintenance section of this service manual. Use of unauthorized parts or failure to follow Maintenance instructions may create a risk of electrical shock or injury. SPECIFIC SAFETY WARNINGS AND RULES WARNING: PERSONAL INJURY RISK. Never touch the grinding wheel while it is moving. Do not touch the work piece after grinding, it will be very hot. Always keep hands and body away from grinding wheel at all times during operation. WARNING: RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK. Don't expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Grinding wheels can produce flying sparks and other debris. Always wear protective clothing and safety glasses. Make sure sparks are directed away from operator, others present or flammable materials. 5. Plan the way you hold the workpiece. Avoid awkward operations and hand positions where a sudden slip could cause fingers or hand to move into grinding surface. Keep fingers at a safe distance from grinding wheel. 2

4 Bench Grinder Safety Rules (Continued) 6. Direction of feed. Feed work into grinding wheel against the direction of rotation of wheel. 7. Never use the side of grinding wheel, use only the cutting edge. 8. If tool speed drops abnormally low, begins to make abnormal noise, vibrations, or if the motor housing produces smoke or burning odor; turn the tool off immediately and do not operate, until repaired. 9. Always make sure the wheel retaining screw is securely tightened before operations. 10. Before leaving grinder. Never leave tool running unattended. Always turn power off. Do not leave tool until it comes to a full stop. 11. Never stand on tool. Serious injury could occur if the tool is tipped or if the grinder is unintentionally contacted. 12. Keep guards in place and in working order. 13. Do not remove material from wheel guard while grinder is moving. Place power switch to "Off" position. Unplug grinder and wait for all moving parts to stop. Safety Warning For California Proposition 65 WARNING! BREATHING HAZARD 1) Use of this tool may cause exposure to chemicals that are known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. 2) Dust and debris created during cutting, drilling, grinding or sanding on some materials may contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer or birth defects or other reproductive harm. To reduce exposure to these chemicals, always use approved safety equipment work in a well-ventilated area and wear dusk mask that filters out microscopic particles. Extension Cords 1. Do not incorrectly use the power cable. Do not carry the tool by the power cable and do not use the power cable to pull the plug out of the socket. Protect the power cable from heat, oil, and sharp edges. Always disconnect the extension cord from the power source before disconnecting the tool. 2. Use only UL listed extension cords. Inspect extension cord before use and never use damaged altered extension cords. Follow extension cord manufacturer safety instructions. 3. Use only a 3-wire extension cord that has a 3-blade grounding plug, and a 3-slot receptacle that accepts the plug on the product. Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your product draws. For lengths less than 25ft, use minimum 18 AWG. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power and overheating. 4. Select the correct size to use depending on cord length and tool nameplate ampere rating. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord. Reference Table 1, chart to select extension cord. Table 1 Minimum Recommended Extension Cord Gauge AMP Load Volts Extension Cord Length 120V 25' 50' 100' 150' AWG Sharpening Scissors (SEE FIGURE 7) If possible, take the scissors apart to make the sharpening operation easier and safer. Remove material only from the outside surface and work from the heavy end of the blade toward the tip. Sharpening Knifes (SEE FIGURE 7) Remove metal from both faces of most knifes, working from the heavy end of the blade toward the tip. Sharpening Screwdriver Blades NOTE: The end of a properly sharpened screwdriver will be a perfect rectangle, absolutely flat and perpendicular to the center line of the shank. The two sides and two faces will taper outward from the edge of the shoulder or shank. They should be flat with intersecting faces perpendicular. (SEE FIGURE 7) Hold each face of the screwdriver against the wheel to true it up. Then ease the end straight into the stone to grind it true. Sharpening Lawn Mower Blades NOTE: Lawn mower blades are usually sharpened on only one side and dressed up slightly on the other. Refer to lawn mower manufactures maintenance manual for additional sharpening techniques. 1. Remove spark plug wires from the mower before servicing the blades to prevent accidental starting. 2. (SEE FIGURE 7) Sharpen blade on only one side and "dress up" other side of blade. 3. After sharpening, be sure to balance the blade. 4. Using a cono balance, remove additional material from the heavy end. Inexpensive cono balances can be purchased separately at most hardware or home supply stores. NOTE: Unbalanced blades can cause serious crank shaft damage to your lawn mower. Figure 7 Tool Rest 3 8

5 Installing Eye Shields NOTE: The eye shields are identical and will fit properly on either side of the grinder. It may be necessary to loosen the center hex nut to slip the shield over the shield rod. 1. (SEE FIGURE 6) With the shield rod assembly in place, attach eye shields (D) to each assembly. NOTE: Install eye shield with mounting hardware on backside, so that hardware is away from operator when in use. 2. Firmly tighten the center hex nut, while allowing for adjustments to eye shield. Eye shield should stay in place after adjustments. 3. Position the eye shields between your eyes and the grinding wheel or other accessory being used. Figure 6 Shield Rod BENCH GRINDER OPERATION Bench Grinder Placement Place bench grinder on a firm level surface where there is plenty of room for handling and properly supporting the workpiece. Fastening Grinder to Surface If during operation the bench grinder starts to tip over or travels the grinder must be secured to the supporting surface. Using the two large holes located at the bottom sides of grinder mount grinder to work surface. (Mounting hardware is not supplied.) CAUTION! CAUTION! Do not remove material from wheel guard while grinder is moving. Place power switch to "Off" position. Unplug grinder and wait for all moving parts to stop. General Operation 1. To start the grinder place the "On/Off" rocker switch to the "On" position. 2. Allow grinder to reach full speed before making contact with work piece or accessories. 3. Use steady, uniform pressure on the work piece for best results. Move the work piece at an even pace across the surface of the grinding wheel for a smooth finish. Excessive pressure can cause premature wear of the grinding wheel and possible overheating. 4. Notice the original bevel angle on the item to be sharpened and try to maintain this shape. 5. The grinding wheel should rotate into the object being sharpened. 6. Keep a tray filled with water and dip your work into water regularly to prevent overheating. Overheating can cause metals to weaken. D Center Hex Nut SPECIFIC SYMBOLS Used with Bench Grinder Hz... Hertz RPM... Revolutions Per Minute V... Volts Amp... Amperes ~... Alternating Current...
