Always exercise extreme caution; follow applicable codes and regulations; and use common sense. Consult with a professional if you are in doubt about any procedure. Always use appropriate safety equipment including, but not limited to, gloves, safety glasses, and steel toe footware. Check your tools and equipment before use to ensure they are in safe, working condition. Some things to consider include: To reduce the chance of electric shock, make sure all electric cords are plugged into ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) plugs. Also, be careful dragging electric cords over or around the steel framing or sheeting. Sharp edges on these components may cut your electric cord. Be aware that the steel framing components and sheet metal in this kit have sharp edges. Always wear gloves to protect against cuts. Safety glasses should be worn at all times, especially when drilling or installing the self-drilling fasteners into the sheeting and trim. Be aware of any low-hanging electric lines, such as the electric feed to a house or outbuilding. The steel framing components and sheeting will conduct electricity and could cause electrocution if they come in contact with electric lines. Be aware of the location of other workers when carrying framing components or sheeting. If you hit someone with the edge of a sheet, it could cause severe injury. 3 Back Yard Building Product Information Before You Start When deciding where to locate your building, keep in mind you will need a flat, level surface upon which to erect it. You will need an area providing a minimum of approximately three feet clearance, on all sides of the building to allow for adequate room to sheet the walls. Orient the endwall in which the door will be installed, in the direction that allows for convenient access. This building can be erected by two people, although more than two may allow for an easier installation process. The following tools are needed to erect this building: Electric cords Drill Screwguns (2) with 5/16 nut drivers and #3 Phillips drivers Vise-Grip locking pliers Vise-Grip clamps 4 level Ratchet with ¾ shallow and deep well sockets ¾ combination wrench Tape measure Right and left cutting sheet metal snips Spud wrench or alignment punch Step ladders (2) Caulk gun Phillips screwdriver SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY x12 BB-3

Back Yard Building Building Installation Step 1 Base Framing Installation Once you have chosen your location in which to erect the building, level the soil as well as possible. Additional soil can be brought in to help with this process. Determine the direction you want the door to face. The door will install in an end wall (one of the 9-2 long walls). Lay out two open-faced channel sections labeled CH1 (Item 1), parallel to each other, with the open side facing each other, 9-2 apart. At each end, lay out a C1 cee (Item 2), with the open side facing the CH1 members. At each corner, lay out an A1 angle (Item 5). All parts are symmetrical, so each end of these parts is the same. Using four fi n head bolts (Item 8) at each corner, attach the A1 angles to the C1 and CH1 members. Be sure to put the bolt head to the outside and the nut to the inside of the frame. Tighten the bolts with a ratchet and ¾ socket and/or a ¾ combination wrench. Before proceeding with further installation, level the framework, on all four sides, with a four foot level. Check to ensure that the fl oor area is square by measuring diagonal corners. If both measurements are the same, the fl oor is square. If they are not, push on either corner of the longest diagonal until both diagonal measurements are the same. SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY x12 BB-15
Building Installation Back Yard Building Step 2 Floor Kit and Tie Down Kit Installation If you do not have the optional floor kit or tie down kit, skip this step and go to Step 3. Floor Kit Framing Installation Install the five C2 (Item 3) cees into the CH1 open face channels (Item 1) and bolt together with fin head bolts (Item 8). Be sure to put the bolt head to the outside and the nut to the inside of the frame. The C2 cees are symmetrical, so it does not matter which way they are oriented. Tighten the bolts with a ratchet and ¾ socket and/or a ¾ combination wrench. Tie Down Kit Installation If you purchased the optional tie down kit, install the tie down augers into the ground at each inside corner of the building. Drill two ¼ holes, 2 apart, through the top return leg of the C1 cee as close as possible to the auger (Item 33). Loop the steel cable through the eye of the auger and through the holes in the C1 cee and fasten with two cable clamps (Item 35). Plywood Floor Installation (Plywood not supplied by Metal Depots) Check to ensure that the floor area is still square by measuring diagonal corners once again. Install the plywood (Item 32), beginning at the end wall in which the door is to be installed. Lay the first sheet so that the 8 length of the plywood is oriented along the end wall (9-2 width) of the building, 1¹ ₂ inside of the steel line. This will allow clearance for the door frame later in the installation sequence. The end of the plywood should be flush with the side wall (12-2 length) steel line. Orient the next two sheets of plywood along the sidewall. Fasten the plywood to the steel framing members with self-drilling reamer fasteners (Item 31) at 2 centers along the edges and along the interior floor joists. Cut an 8 and 4 long piece of plywood 14 wide and install with the butt joint offset from the butt joint of the full width plywood. CAUTION Metal Depots strongly recommends that you secure the building to the ground to help prevent strong winds from moving or overturning the building. If you did not purchase a tie-down kit, secure the building to the ground in some manner. 9x12 BB-16 SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 2015
Back Yard Building Building Installation Step 3 Roof Framing Installation Using fin head bolts (Item 8), four at each corner, attach the remaining C1 (Item 2) and CH1 (Item 1) members to the top of the A1 angles (Item 5). NOTE It will be easier if you attach the CH1 members to the A1 angles first, then attach the C1 members. Starting at each end of the CH1, skip the fi rst set of prepunched holes, then install a C2 cee (Item 3) into the CH1 channel. It does not matter which direction the C2 cees are oriented. This will create an approximate four foot spacing across the roof. Be sure to put the bolt heads to the outside and the nut to the inside of the frame. Tighten the bolts with a ratchet and ¾ socket and/or a ¾ combination wrench. SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY x12 BB-17
Building Installation Back Yard Building Step 3 (cont d.) Roof Framing Installation Check to ensure that the roof area is square by measuring diagonal corners. If both measurements are the same, the roof is square. If they are not, push on either corner of the longest diagonal until both diagonal measurements are the same. Find and mark the center of both end walls. Align the center of the ridge purlin (Item 6) with these marks and attach it to the C1 and C2 cees with two wall fasteners (Item 25) at each cee, eight fasteners total. 9x12 BB-18 SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 2015
Back Yard Building Building Installation Step 4 Door Installation Using a four foot level, check the end wall that is to receive the door to ensure that it is plumb. Check for plumb at both corners of this end wall. Install the door (Item 30) into the center of the end wall. The door frame will fi t between the top and bottom C1 cees with the lip of the door frame fl ush with the outside face of the channels. Plumb the door with the four foot level and temporarily C clamp it to the C1 cee at the top of the door frame. Install a pancake head (Item 22) fastener through the lip of the door frame and into the C1 cee, at each corner of the door frame, top and bottom. SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY x12 BB-19
Building Installation Back Yard Building Step 5 Base Trim Installation Before installation, remove the strippable fi lm from all four pieces of base trim. The ends of the base trim have been mitered to fi t together at the corners. The base trim for the side walls (Item 18) will be installed fi rst. The side wall base trim has tabs that must be bent to a 90-degree angle before installation. Install both pieces of side wall base trim to the fl oor with pancake head fasteners (Item 22) at three foot on center and to the side of the CH1 channel with the trim color hex head fasteners (Item 24) at three foot on center. Repeat the above procedures to install the end wall base trim (Item 17). The end wall with the door will require you to cut the base trim at both sides of the door. You can cut the trim 1 long on both sides of the door and notch the trim to allow you to plug the opening in the end of the base trim. 9x12 BB-20 SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 2015
Back Yard Building Building Installation Step 6 Door Jamb Support/Trim Installation On each side of the door frame, install a C3 cee (Item 4). The C3 cee will attach to both the top and bottom C1 cees (Item 2) with angle clips (Item 7). Use the wall panel fasteners (Item 25) to attach the clips to the channels. Use the fl oor fasteners (Item 31) to attach the clips to the fl oor. If a fl oor kit was not ordered, use pancake fasteners (Item 22) to attach the clips to the bottom CH1 channel. The door is now ready to be trimmed. Remove the strippable fi lm from both pieces of jamb trim (Item 15) and from the head trim (Item 16). Set the head trim (Item 16) on top of the door frame, center it, and mark the left and right edges of the door frame on the bottom of the trim. Turn the trim over and cut a tab in the bottom of the trim to within ¼ of the marks at each end. Bend these tabs down and set the trim back at the top of the door frame. SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY x12 BB-21
Building Installation Back Yard Building Step 6 (Cont d.) Door Jamb Support/Trim Installation C clamp the head trim to each end of the C1 cee at the top of the door frame and install three wall panel fasteners (Item 25) through the head trim and into the C1 cee. Set a piece of jamb trim (Item 15) on the base trim at one side of the door frame. Mark the top of the jamb trim even with the bottom of the head trim that was just installed. Cut the jamb trim at this mark and C clamp the jamb trim to the C3 cee. Attach the jamb trim to the C3 cee with four wall panel fasteners. Repeat this process with the jamb trim for the opposite jamb of the door. Using the snips, cut each end of the head trim even with the outside edge of the jamb trim to provide a fi nished appearance. 9x12 BB-22 SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 2015
Back Yard Building Building Installation Step 7 Wall Panel Installation Separate the wall panels into four bundles, one for each wall. The wall with the door will have two special width panels (Item 10A). The opposite end wall will have four panels and the two side walls will have fi ve panels each. Set each bundle on boards to keep them off the ground. NOTE The panels have different rib configurations at each side rib. One side has a partial rib which laps to the outside and is the side that will be marked for predrilling. The other side has a full rib, referred to as a Purlin Bearing Leg. This leg laps to the inside and will provide support during lap fastener installation. To ensure that the wall fasteners are aligned, it is best to pre-drill the panels while they are in bundles. Make sure all four bundles of wall panels are fl ush at the bottom end. C clamp each bundle of panels together to prevent them from moving. At the bottom end of each bundle, mark the fastener location in the center of each fl at between the panel ribs. The mark should be 1 from the bottom of the panels. The wall with the door will not require any side lap fasteners and needs no predrilling at the panel side laps. The other three walls will require side laps and will need to be pre-drilled at the side lap. Make the fi rst mark at 3 from the bottom, in the center of the rib. Mark every two feet thereafter. Using a 1/8 drill bit, pre-drill each bundle at the marked locations. Always attach a second C clamp to within a few inches of each mark before you drill the hole. This will help prevent breaking drill bits and keep the holes in the proper location throughout the bundle. SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY x12 BB-23
Building Installation Back Yard Building Step 7 (Cont d) Wall Panel Installation Before installing the wall panels, check to make sure the wall is plumb. The fi rst panel on each wall will start with the edge of the partial side rib aligned with the steel line. The last panel on each wall should fi nish with the purlin bearing leg no more than 3/4 past the steel line. On the wall with the door, install the special width panels, one on each side of the door, with the panel fl at extending into the door jamb trim. Install panels to the wall with six fasteners (Item 25) at the base, in the predrilled holes and six fasteners at the top in every fl at, beginning with the fl at immediately adjacent to the predrilled side lap. The top fasteners should be approximately 1 below the panel top. These fasteners will be covered by trim later, so alignment is not necessary. At each corner, install additional wall fasteners 1 on center along the length of the panels on each side of the corner. These fasteners will attach the wall panel to the A1 angle (Item 5). Install wall color lap teks (Item 27) into the pre-drilled holes in the side of the wall panels. 9x12 BB-24 SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 2015
Back Yard Building Building Installation Step 8 Roof Installation Remove the strippable fi lm from the eave trim (Item 13) and install to the top of the wall panels with the trim color lap fasteners (Item 28). Install these fasteners through the eave trim and into every other panel rib (one foot on center). Locate the foam inside closures (Item 21) and lay out fi ve by each side wall. These closures will be installed under the roof panels as they are installed. SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY x12 BB-25
Building Installation Back Yard Building Step 8 (Cont d) Roof Installation With the three metal roof panels in a bundle and the ends fl ush, mark the side lap fastener locations on the panel side lap that is a partial rib. The fi rst mark will be 4 from the panel end and then 20 on center thereafter, with a fi nal mark 4 from the other end of the panels. Use C clamps to hold the panels together and drill a 1/8 hole in the center of the panel side rib at the marked locations. Starting at the back end wall, lay the fi rst roof panel across the framing with the purlin bearing leg toward the inside of the building. The roof panel should overhang the eave trim by approximately 2-3/4. Make sure the overhang is the same dimension on both sides. Be sure the inside closures (Item 21) are under, and properly nested with, the roof panel on both sides. Attach the roof panel at both ends with long life fasteners (Item 23) in every fl at between the panel ribs for a total of six fasteners per side. Install three fasteners into the ridge purlin in every other fl at beginning with the fl at closest to the predrilled panel side lap. CAUTION Install roof panels from a step ladder on either side of the building. Panels will not support the point load of a man standing at mid span as they are fastened. Always exercise extreme care when walking on panels after fastening to prevent buckling of panel ribs. Apply tape sealant (Item 19) along the top of the purlin bearing side lap of the roof panel just installed. The next panel to be installed will be the light transmitting panel (Item 11). Install this panel just as the previous roof panel was installed except, leave the last fastener out of the panel at both ends. Since the fi berglass light transmitting panel has to be on top of the metal roof panels on both sides, leaving these fasteners out will make it easier to slide the next metal roof panel under this light transmitting panel. 9x12 BB-26 SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 2015
Back Yard Building Building Installation Step 8 (Cont d) Roof Installation Before installing the next roof panel, apply tape sealant along both side laps. The side rib of the metal panel must fi t under the side rib of the light transmitting panel. Fasten this panel to the framing as previously outlined. You can now install the fasteners, that were previously left out of the light transmitting panel. Install the last metal roof panel using the same methods as previously outlined. Install the lap fasteners (Item 26) into the predrilled holes in the roof panels. SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY x12 BB-27
Building Installation Back Yard Building Step 9 Trim Installation Remove the strippable film from the four pieces of corner trim (Item 12). At the bottom end of the corner trim, mark the fastener flange at 3 and every two foot thereafter. Do this on both sides of the trim. Attach the corner trim with the trim color structural fasteners (Item 24) at each mark. Install all four corners in this manner. Install tape sealant (Item 19) to the roof panel side ribs at each end wall. Remove the strippable film from the rake trim (Item 14). This trim must be handled carefully to prevent damaging it. Install the rake trim at each wall and attach to the roof side rib with trim color lap fasteners (Item 28) at two foot on center. Attach the rake trim to the end wall with trim color lap fasteners at two foot on center. Use the urethane caulk (Item 20) to seal the slit in the apex of the rake trim and any other places as needed. 9x12 BB-28 SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 2015
Back Yard Building Building Installation Step 10 Screw Cap Installation On the inside of the building, install the screw caps (Item 29) over the drill points of all exposed fasteners. The screw caps are intended to help prevent injury from contact with the drill point. SUBJECT TO CHANGE WITHOUT NOTICE SEE FOR CURRENT INFORMATION EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY x12 BB-29
Gable Installation Back Yard Building Step 1 Post Installation Once you have chosen your location to erect the addition, level the soil as well as possible. Additional soil can be brought in to help with the process. 9 x 12 BackYard Building Use a string line to layout were the 4 x 4 post will be located. Each post will be inset by 2 on each side to account for the CH4 or CH5 part. The 5-9 1/2 is based on the outside of the wall panel of the building.
