1 5.32 Steel Pole Assembly Purpose This instruction outlines the safe method for joining/assembling and lifting in-ground mounted two piece steel power poles. Scope This instruction applies to all Horizon Power workers that are engaged in the joining/assembly and lifting of two piece steel power poles. Training and Authorisation Horizon Power workers who intend to work on Horizon Power owned assets, must be trained and authorised as per: Safety The Horizon Power Technical Skills Matrix: The Horizon Power Contractor authorisation process in 1.2 Contractor Authorisation Process. Before commencement of work, a risk assessment must be carried out using the Risk Analysis Procedure (OSH ), to identify and document the hazards and risks associated with the task and ensure appropriate control measures are implemented. It is important that, appropriate control measures must be identified, documented and implemented in order to control hazards to As Low as Reasonable Practicable (ALARP). Instruction A visual inspection of all lifting equipment (slings, shackles, chains etc.) must be carried out prior to use to ensure it is in serviceable condition and operates correctly. Wear gloves as per FI 2.1 (Glove Protection) and refer to FI 2.6 (Worksite Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment Requirements) for the correct level of personal protective equipment for the assembly and erecting of poles. Slip Joining Methods of horizontal two piece steel power pole assembly are detailed: Arrange the base section onto packing so that it is clear of the ground (so that the underside of the pole section will be horizontal), ensure the packing near the slip joint is at least 300 mm beyond the normal slip length The height of the packing should be such that the base section is well clear of the ground. Make sure that the base section is wedged to prevent rotation (see Fig: 2) CS# FI 5.32 Steel Pole Assembly Page 1 of 5

2 Note the design slip length (700 mm) and make a reference mark on the male end of the pole 300 mm beyond this length (for verifying actual slip distance, see link: Sling the upper section (to assist with handling the pole section) at its centre of gravity (generally 0.42 to 0.45 x section length from the big end), carefully align sections and engage the sections as far as possible, ensuring perfect alignment. Place steel joining beams across each end of the pole (remove anti-sink strap before placing steel joining beams), the bracket will easily slide over the section and, for the 12.5m/40kN, will have a nominal 20mm gap all around. The locking bolts are 60mm long and can be lightly tightened against the section, recommend using a timber packer 20mm thick on the top flat before sliding on to ensure approximately centralised (50mm wide will fit both big and small ends), and assemble two 5 tonne pull hand winches (tirfors), the beams are set across the pole centre such that the resultant joining force is applied centrally to the pole, (see Fig: 6 for detailed steel joining beam arrangement) Operate the hand winches in unison to compress the joint, striking the end beams or the slip joint (via timber blocks) will assist in achieving a sound joint. Continue to apply tension until no further movement is achieved, check the actual slip length achieved against the design length, then check that it is at least 1.35 time the female inside dimension across flats (refer Hayman Industries if the actual slip leant is less than this) Note: Misalignment of sections for any reason may lead to jamming which may be very difficult to rectify. After joining pole the anti-sink strap needs to be put back in place before standing pole. Pole Lifting All lifting equipment (slings, shackles, chains etc.) to have a minimum safe working load of 2 tonnes and to be suitably sized for rigging arrangement. Pole lifting is similar to timber/concrete poles, except slip jointed poles must be lifted with non-chocked sling anchored back to the base section to ensure there is no possibility of a slip jointed section separating during installation. Choked slings can be used for one piece poles without slip joints, place a sling approximately two thirds the pole length, and ensure it is suitably chocked to prevent the sling from sliding up the pole. For two piece poles, place a single unchoked sling around the pole at approximately two thirds height and an anchoring chain to the pole base section, an M20 nuts provided in the base section to permit a rated eyebolt to be attached to secure the anchoring chain (recommended Rud Starpoint M20 VRS-F 2.3t eyebolt), Note all poles are provided with this anchor plate (see Fig: 5) CS# FI 5.32 Steel Pole Assembly Page 2 of 5

3 The pole can be lifted, orientated and positioned into the footing hole.
