Bamboo is sustainably grown and managed in Asia, primarily China. Due to its plant structure, new growth comes from existing root structure, and matures to harvest in 5-7 years. This rapidly renewable product is recognized by LEEDs, and can contribute points in the MR6 category for rapidly renewable resources. Bamboo is offered in two flat panel door styles: Bali, Burma, as well as shaker styled frame and panel doors. It is also used as the center panel on the Islands door. The Bamboo used for all doors and associated panels and parts, is the narrow grain (sometimes called vertical grain) pattern as opposed to the wide flat grain pattern. Bali and Burma are slab style doors, one in a vertical grain direction and the other in horizontal. These doors feature the exposed lumber core edge. Bamboo is available in Caramelized, and can be ordered as natural color, or with a stain. See the Wood Stain Selection Chart. The caramel color is a result of the Bamboo being heat treated, which activates the sugars in the wood. Caramelized Bamboo is subject to color variation due to this process as well as the other uncontrollable growth processes common to any naturally grown tree or plant. Care is taken to sort for color matching panels, but cannot be guaranteed. Caramelized Bamboo is available in select stain colors. These mid tone to darker stain colors will mask color variation. Understand too, that Caramelized Bamboo has a tendency to lighten in color with age. All doors are manufactured using a lumber core Bamboo, as opposed to a veneer bonded to a substrate. Edge banding is not applied to any of the doors, so the lumber core bands show, providing a unique appearance to all edges October 2016 DOORS.11

4 standard wood descriptions Bellmont Cabinet Company is proud of the fine quality hardwoods and veneers offered in its 1900 product line. These hardwoods and veneers are a select grade minimizing color inconsistencies and grain variation. However, due to the nature of hardwood trees and growing conditions, variations in color and grain character will still occur; no two boards will look exactly the same. Following are very brief descriptions of the woods offered in ALDER Clear Alder, or Red Alder as it is often called, grows in the Pacific Coast areas of USA and Canada. Alder has a fine, smooth straight grain with random mineral streaks and mild color variation. Alder tends to amber with age. Although it is classified as a hardwood species, it is softer than woods such as oak and maple. Alder trees are smaller in diameter and height, and have a higher concentration of branches resulting in more character pin knots. Also, due to the smaller tree size, Alder veneer panels will show a higher quantity of flitches, or seams per face. RUSTIC ALDER Rustic Alder is priced the same as the standard species. This rustic wood will exhibit random sized closed knots, pronounced wood grain color variation, and more prevalent mineral streaks. Size, placement, and quantity of knots will vary from door to door, which contributes to the natural beauty and interest of the Alder rustic wood species. Rustic Alder is only available on select door styles, and will only be used on doors and drawer fronts. Factory finished ends, panels, and moldings will not be rustic grade wood. Consider the use of plant on doors for exposed cabinets ends and backs. Stain, stain/glaze, and Villa Collection finishes are available. CHERRY American Cherry is a deciduous tree growing in scattered forests primarily in the eastern states. Cherry is a light pinkish brown tone in its natural state, but darkens with age taking on its own unique color character. Neither the rate nor resulting color of the aging process is entirely predictable. It will be more evident when using a natural finish, as opposed to a pigmented stain. Grain characteristics such as fine pin holes and pitch pockets will be evident, along with mild color variation. The heartwood of cherry varies from rich red to reddish brown. The sapwood is light brown to light tan. The wood has a fine uniform, straight grain, satiny-smooth texture. MAPLE Maple (Hard Maple or Rock Maple) is a deciduous tree growing in the eastern US states and Canada. Maple is one of the harder and denser of the common cabinet hardwood species. Maple has some color variation, primarily creamy white with a slight reddish brown tinge. Even with its smooth, fine grain, mineral streaks are common and appear darker when stained. Due to natural resins, Maple has a tendency to yellow or amber with age and light exposure. A mottled or blotchy look may be evident when mid and darker toned stains are applied. RED OAK American Red Oak is one of the hardest of the common cabinet hardwood species. It primarily comes from eastern US and Canadian forests. Oak has a coarse texture with predominant grain patterns running from straight to arched and pointed. Color and hue variations will be present. Red Oak is white to light brown and the heartwood is a pinkish-reddish brown. Red Oak also may contain small pin knots and mineral streaks. Mid tone and darker stains tend to accentuate the open grain patterns dominate in Red Oak. HARDWOOD VENEERS All of the hardwood species offered also come in veneers, which are used on most recessed panel doors styles and for flat panel surfaces such as factory finished ends and field installed panels. Graining and coloring of veneers can vary slightly from actual solid woods. This is a result of the veneer manufacturing processes and sources of the hardwoods versus the veneers. Be aware that door styles using recessed veneer panels may exhibit a slight color variation between the panel and solid woods, particularly when a natural finish is specified. Veneers may age differently than hardwoods as well. These characteristics are not considered defects, and therefore are not considered to be a warranty issue. DOORS July 2016
