1 November Series Lo-T TM Butterfly Control Valve Instructions Instruction No. 25.1:IM PRELIMINARY STEPS Before installation, note the flow direction arrow on the valve body. The flow should enter the valve on the concave side of the vane. That is, the side having the exposed shaft. All valve bodies are rated Class 300 and installs between ANSI Class 150 and 300 or DIN PN 10 and 25 line flanges. However, make sure that the vane (2) is in the open position after installation when the pipe line is hydrostatically tested since the vane (2) and shaft (3) are not rated for the full hydrostatic pressure differential. INSTALLATION Before installing the valve body between the mating pipe line flanges, make sure that the vane(2) is in the closed position. For fail open valves, this can be done by applying 20 psi air pressure to the actuator (do not exceed 35 psi) or with the top mounted handwheel (optional). After installation, please backoff handwheel to allow for full vane operation. The valve bodies are flangeless and will fit between line flanges with raised faces of Class 150 or 300 and between metric flanges of PN 10,16 and 25. Nevertheless, the valve must be properly aligned with the center of the flange to avoid interference of the flange bore with the vane. The vane is purposely kept undersized so that it will swing freely into a flange bore corresponding to a schedule 80 pipe ID. 1. Install tie rods through lower flange holes to form a cradle for the valve body. For 4 body or Class 300 flange mounting, tubular spacers may be placed over lower tie rods to lift body to center. Next, place gaskets on either side of valve body and add remaining tie rods. Be sure body is centered with flanges before tightening all tie rods. 2. Before placing the valve in operation, stroke the valve through its full travel by applying manually regulated air pressure to the actuator, or by stroking the valve by means of a handwheel (if provided). TEMPERATURE LIMITS NOTE: The bearings and packing are Teflon lubricated which limits the operating temperatures to F (325 0 F for stainless steel bodies) unless special materials are specified. VALVE BODY MAINTENANCE BODY DISASSEMBLY 1. Disconnect air lines from actuator or positioner. 2. Apply air pressure or use handwheel, if provided, to bring the actuator stem(35) down (only required for air-to-open installations). 3. Remove 5/16-24 hex head cap screws(25), washer(26) and pointer(38) from shaft end(3). 4. Unscrew hex head cap screw(39) and locknut(29) to loosen linkages(18 &18a) on shaft(3). 5. Remove hex nuts(13) and slide packing flange(7) and packing follower(6) away from valve bonnet. 6. Remove two (2) hex head cap screws(12) from bracket (17) and pull complete actuator with bracket(17) from shaft(3) and away from valve body(1). NOTE: Orientation of bracket and linkage for reassembly. REMOVAL OF GUIDE BUSHINGS 1. Remove packing rings(15), bottom ring(5) and spring (10). 2. Remove outboard bearing cover assembly(16). (Not required for 2 valve size.) 3. Drive out taper pins(14) by placing a 5/32 diameter pin through drilled holes from the downstream side of the vane and hit gently with hammer. 4. Remove shaft(3) and pull out vane(2). NOTE: Remember orientation of vane for reassembly. 5. Use an 11/16 diameter or 18 mm diameter metal rod and push guides(4) towards center opening of the body. REPLACING PACKING RINGS 1. Insert compression spring(10) and bottom ring(5) over shaft(3) and into bonnet. BAUMANN INC., 2001; All Rights Reserved

2 2. Install 5/8 x1 diameter packing rings over shaft (one at a time) and compress (pound with hollow metal bar). NOTE: For skive-cut rings rotate each ring approximately 60 0 against the previous ring. REASSEMBLE VALVE 1. Reassemble the valve in reverse order as previously described. Make sure the vane touches the body bore properly when actuator is in the closed position by rotating the bracket with actuator attached clockwise for air-to-open within the clearance of sockethead screws (12) ( counter clockwise for air-to-close). This will preload the actuator springs slightly. Tighten sockethead cap screws(12) in the preloaded position. NOTE: For fail-close action, the vane always closes when the shaft is turned clockwise and counterclockwise for fail-open action. 2. Realign pointer(38) if necessary and tighten hexhead cap screw (25). 3. Rotate shaft with vane through about 70 0 from closed position. There should be no interference. IMPORTANT: When replacing bracket(17), remove taper pins(14) from vane(2) and redrill taper pin holes in shaft(3) (new shaft is required) after the vane has been fully assembled with actuator in place and in correct stroke position, and shaft is pressed against ball bearing(24) by cap screw(25). Vane should be in closed position and kept in center of body bore with paper shims. ACTUATOR MAINTENANCE REPLACE DIAPHRAGM 1. Disconnect air lines. 2. Remove cap screws(45), nuts(46), and upper diaphragm case(41). 3. Hold lower portion of actuator stem(35) with 11/16 wrench. Loosen and remove head bolt(49) and diaphragm plate(42). NOTE: Spring load will be relieved. 4. Replace diaphragm(43). Note location of bolt holes and make sure the rolled portion of the diaphragm fits into the lower diaphragm case(40). Do not disturb springs(47). Replace head bolt(49) and tighten. 5. Reassemble upper diaphragm case(41) and check operation with air through 1-9/16 stroke. There should be no more than 2% of signal span deadband (no valve attached). REVERSE ACTION 1. Remove air lines. 2. Remove actuator, shaft(3) and vane(2). 3. Reinstall vane(2) in reverse direction, i.e. closing clockwise instead of counterclockwise or vice versa. 4. With vane in new location, it is recommended to replace with new shaft(3) for better results. Slide actuator back onto shaft(3). Retighten all cap screws(12)(25)(39) as previously described. Bring actuator into closed position. 5. Redrill pin holes (14) of vane and shaft in new location with edge of vane pushed firmly into housing (use c-clamp). DISASSEMBLE ACTUATOR 1. Remove actuator from valve body. 2. Unscrew hex head cap screws(45) and remove upper diaphragm case(41). 3. Remove head bolt(49) while holding actuator stem(35) with 11/16 wrench. NOTE: Spring load will be released. 4. Pull diaphragm plate(42) with diaphragm(43) from assembly. 5. Hold actuator stem(35) with wrench and unscrew ball joint(36). Replace Belleville washers(51) if required. 6. When replacing ball joint(36) make sure distance 3-7/32 (82mm) from center of ball to lower diaphragm case(40) is maintained. Tighten travel stop(48) with jam nut(30). REASSEMBLY OF ACTUATOR 1. Attach stem(35) to diaphragm plate(42) using head bolt (49) and Belleville washer(51). 2. Place springs(47) (use 4 for 4-15 psi bench range and 6 for 6-22 psi or 8-35 psi bench range) into lower diaphragm case(40). 3. Place diaphragm plate(42) over springs(47). Rotate diaphragm plate(42) back and forth until all springs are centered on guides (place 4 springs symmetrically). 4. Attach diaphragm(43) to diaphragm plate(42) with head bolt(49). NOTE: Holes to line up with lower diaphragm case(40). 5. Place upper diaphragm case(41) on top of lower case (40) and tighten hex head cap screws(45) and nuts(46) evenly. Push spring(47) down to engage screws(45). 6. Apply approximately 10 psi air pressure to actuator or move stem(35) down with optional handwheel if provided. 7. Remove air pressure and turn actuator over for bracket (17) to point up. Insert travel stop(48) with flat facing towards opening in bracket. Next, screw ball joint(36) into stem(35) until center of ball joint extends 3-7/32 from lower surface of diaphragm case(40). Lock with jam nut(30). NOTE: Ball joint to be perpendicular to valve stem axis. 8. Place pair of linkages(18) as shown; ensure that linkage with slot faces towards valve. Insert screw(39) and partly engage nut(29) (linkage to hang loose). Note Orientation: Extended side of linkage hubs to face outwards. 9. Apply approximately 10 psi air pressure to actuator and slide actuator, packing follower(6), packing flange(7) and linkages(18 & 18a) onto shaft(3). Note vane location for reassembly. Actuator stem(35) should be pushed down. -2-

3 10. Engage screws(12) and bolt bracket(17) against valve body(1). Engage nuts(13) finger tight, then tighten nuts 1/2 to 1 full turn using a wrench. 11. Insert screw(25) with pointer(38) and washer(26) to shaft(3) and tighten. 12. Slide linkages(18) to center of tube bracket(17) and tighten screw(39). (This will lock linkages (18) on to shaft(3).) 13. Use air pressure to stroke actuator through full travel (1-9/16 ); there should be no binding or deadband exceeding 0.8 psi, check for air leakage. 14. Make sure shaft is tight against ball bearing(24), tighten hex head cap screws (25). 15. Pin vane(2) to shaft(3) in the closed valve position if required. 16. Align pointer(38) with serial plate(62) in the closed vane position. 17. Set lower tap screw(31) if required to limit down travel. -3-
