1 Work Area General Shop Safety Eastview High School Technology & Engineering Department Keep work area clean Assure area is well lit Be aware of bystanders and surrounding area Properly secure and support work piece Use a tail off person, an out feed stand or a sawhorse. General Safety Obtain permission from the Instructor Do not operate machinery/tools if your judgement is impaired NO loose clothing Long hair tied back Always know where your fingers are related to moving parts Do not distract operators No horseplay in the shop No yelling across the room Do NOT travel behind an operator NO ipods or headphones Wear appropriate PPE First-Aid IMMEADIATLY inform instructor of injury Location: First Aid kit Eye Wash hstation Fire blanket Fire Extinguisher Master Power Switch Personal Protective Equipment Eyes ANSI Z 87 approved safety glasses Ears Attenuating ear plugs or headset (NO ipods) Skin protective clothing/gloves l Lungs Dust mask/respirator Hand Tool Safety Only use hand tool for intended purpose Keep cutting edge sharp Inspect for damage/cleanliness BEFORE use Cut away from your body Transport and store properly (Tip down) 1
2 Power Tool Safety Kickback Injury Only use power tool for intended purpose Inspect for damage BEFORE use Be aware of blade/bit path Beware of shock hazard Keep cord out of blade path Do NOT operate in standing water or rain Do not start tool while contacting material Store Properly Machinery All guards MUST be in place and functioning properly Push sticks and push blocks used where appropriate Machine table is clean and clear of debris and tools Make sure tool is at FULL SPEED prior to use Make all adjustments with the machine stopped Short or round stock requires special set up and instructor Blades and bits should be sharp (Sharp=Safe) Do not force material Saw Blade injury X-Ray Saw Blade Injury Post- Operative NOTICE: Very Graphic Images Follow 2
3 Saw Blade Injury Emergency Table Saw SAFETY ZONE: 6 PURPOSE: Rips, Dados, Rabbets, Bevels & Miters Stock must have a straight edge against fence OR miter gauge Stock must travel straight NEVER reach over blade Stand clear of blade path Blade rotates up and towards you Planer PURPOSE: Reduce thickness/straighten the face MATERIALS: Wood THIS IS AN AUTO FEED Machine (Stay well clear) DO NOT plane stock < 12 Long or < ½ NEVER reach across cutterhead Blades rotate down and towards you Miter Saw PURPOSE: Cross cut and miters Stock must have a straight edge against fence Non cutting hand holds stock not fence NEVER cross arm saw Blade rotates down and away from you Jointer PURPOSE: Straighten the edge of lumber MATERIALS: Wood Adjust Fence for stock width DO NOT joint stock < 12 Long or < ½ Use push stick/block NEVER reach across cutterhead Blades rotate up and towards you Band Saw PURPOSE: Curved cuts & Re sawing Adjust upper guide to 1/8 above stock Use release cuts when necessary Do NOT make sharp turns Large blade = Large curve Small blade = Small curve 3
4 Belt/Disc (Combo) Sander PURPOSE: Shaping & smoothing exterior surfaces Stock should be held firmly on the table Do not remove excessive material Router PURPOSE: Shaping edges of stock Feed stock opposite of bit rotation Cut end grain first Reduce travel speed near end of pass Spindle Sander PURPOSE: Shaping & smoothing interior surfaces Stock should be held firmly on the table Do not remove excessive material Move stock against the rotation the drum Grinder PURPOSE: Smooth, shape and sharpen MATERIALS: Ferrous metal only (Steel) Inspect wheels for cracks and chips Tool rest is set 1/8 from wheel Use wheel dresser to fully stop Drill Press PURPOSE: Drill holes Ensure straight and tight chuck Use backer board or vise Select proper speed Bit rotates clockwise Welding Machines (With Gloves, Helmet, & Jacket) PURPOSE: Joining MATERIALS: Metal (Not Stainless, Galvanized or Bronze) Medical Alert: Creates a strong magnetic field Produces blinding light and intense heat Must have proper ventilation Do not weld closed/flammable containers Machine settings specific to materials 4
5 Conclusion Respect the capability of all machines and tools. Any questions regarding safety should ALWAYS be askedbefore using a machine/tool. Safety is the responsibility of each individual, but we should all monitor each other. 5
