4 Hold the wing up to the light with the bottom of the wing facing you and mark the outside edges of the two middle ribs below the spar. Measure from each edge of the wing. Each mark should be approximately 11 from the edge. Position the fuse so that it is perpendicular to the wing. Double-check the length of the wing from each side of the fuse, making sure they are the same. Once happy with the location of the fuse, glue it in place. 4
5 Measure Down 1 from the top of each edge of the horizontal stab and make a mark. Using a hobby knife with a new blade and a ruler cut the elevator from the horizontal stab. Flip the horizontal stab over and mark ¼ down from the hinge line the entire width of the horizontal stab. Cut a 45-degree angle down to the hinge line. Tip: Be careful not to cut into the top of the horizontal stab. You actually want to leave about 1/16 at the hinge area. Note: You can also sand this angle using a hand sanding pad, or fingernail file. 5
6 On the bottom of the horizontal stabilizer, find the centerline and place a mark (approximately 5.5 from each end). Place another mark 1/2 on each side of the centerline. Insert horizontal stabilizer into fuse and center making sure horizontal stab is perpendicular to the fuse. Tip: You should be able to measure from the trailing edge wing tip to the trailing edge tip of the horizontal stabilizer on each side to insure the horizontal stab is centered and perpendicular. Once happy with the location, glue in place. 6
7 Mark the elevator hinge area on the fuse and cut it out on both fuse halves. Note: You will cut through both fuse keels. On the bottom of each aileron, place a mark 5/16 down from the hinge line. Cut an angle to the hinge line. 7
8 Cut 2 strips of 1 wide strapping tape 11 long. Apply tape to the top of each aileron with half of the tape hanging over the hinge line. Tape each aileron to the trailing edge of the wing. Cut 2 more strip of 1 wide strapping tape 11 long. Hinge each aileron all the way over and apply strapping tape. 8
9 Flip the elevator over and mark 1/16 down from the hinge line the entire width of the elevator. Cut a slight angle down to the hinge line. Tip: Be careful not to cut into the top of the elevator. You actually want to leave about 1/16 at the hinge area. Note: You can also sand this angle using a hand sanding pad, or fingernail file. Cut 2 strips of 1 strapping tape 5 long. Tape to the top of the elevator and horizontal stab. 9
10 Cut 2 more strips of 1 wide strapping tap 5 long. Tape to the bottom of the elevator and horizontal stab. Glue the slit from the elevator to the rudder shut. Cut a piece of strapping tape 6 long and apply to the vertical stab keeping it as straight as possible. 10
11 Cut a V on the rudder hinge line. Cut 2 pieces of 1 wide strapping tape 6 long. Hinge the rudder with the pieces of strapping tape. 11
12 If using an AXI 2204/54, cut ½ off of your motor mount. Depending on your motor, you might want to cut more or less. It depends on how much of the motor you want sticking out the front. Draw a diagonal line from one corner of the plywood firewall mount to the other corner. Repeat this to create an X to fin the center mark. If using an AXI 2204/54 drill a hole in the center of this X. Insert motor on firewall mount and mark mounting holes. Pre-drill these mounting holes with a small drill bit. Cut 2 strips of strapping tape 3/8 wide by 12 long. Glue firewall mount onto foam motor mount and tape around both pieces with the strapping tape. Mount motor to motor mount. Trim out a small piece of foam from the front top fuse keel so the wires from the motor will not hit the keel. Rub goop around motor mount and slide into fuse until it hits the leading edge of the wing. 12
13 Measure down 5.5 from the nose to the inside of the fuse and place a mark. Place your servo in the center of the fuse with the front edge on this mark. Draw around servo to mark its place. Remove servo and cut out servo location in fuse keel/wing. Insert servo into servo location and glue servo in place with its wire coming out the bottom of the servo location. Remove servo horn and install optional dubro Mini E/Z Connectors #845 (optional). Put servo horn back onto servo. Measure down the side of the fuse from the wing spar and place a mark at 2 and 3.5. Measure up from the wing and place a mark at ½. Cut out square hole in the side of the fuse. Repeat on opposite side of the fuse. Measure down ¼ from the hinge line and place a mark on the aileron 3/8 from the edge of the aileron. Glue Dubro control horn at this location. Repeat on other aileron. Cut two pieces of.032 wire 5 long. Install linkage using optional Dubro Micro E/Z Link connectors or use Z bends. 13
14 Cut strips of strapping tape 1.5 x 2 and place in front of the aileron servo and behind the aileron servo. Cut a slit through the wing from the top of the fuse to the bottom of the fuse in front of the aileron servo. Run the power wires from the ESC through the wing to the bottom of the fuse. Place one of the double-sided foam tapes on the bottom of the ESC and one of the bottom of the receiver. Tape down the ESC and receiver onto the strapping tape located in front and behind the aileron servo. On the bottom of the fuse cut some strapping tape and put it down, then put some Velcro (not included) on the strapping tape for your battery. Note: You might want to wait to do this step until after you are done with the elevator and rudder servo linkage, so you can put the tape/velcro where your battery will CG the plane. You want the CG close to 2" back from the wing spar. 14
15 Stretch out servos and mark locations. Cut out servo locations in fuse keel. Glue servos in place. Cut hole in each fuse half for servo horn to pass through. Install optional Dubro Mini E/Z Connectors (#845) on servo horns and install on servo. Then install the control horns on the elevator and rudder and installed the linkage using the optional dubro hardware. 15
16 Glue the top of the fuse halves together from the rudder to the paint on the canopy. You can use tape or pins to help hold it together while the glue dries. Then you want to glue the nosepiece in from the front to the canopy. Once that glue is dry, go ahead and glue the canopy area together using pins to help. 16
17 Slice the supplied Velcro in half long ways. Cut two pieces of strapping tape 1" wide the length of both pieces of Velcro (6"-8"). Tip: As an option you can spray this tape with 3M 77 on the sticky side because this tape will get a lot of wear and tear due to removing the battery. Now put the tape on the bottom of each fuse half starting at the front. Note: If you used 3m 77, apply heat with a heat gun while sticking the tape down. This will help the 3m 77 adhesive set Once this is complete, stick the Velcro on the tape that is on the bottom of each fuse half as seen below. 17
18 Now the last thing to do is glue up the rest of the bottom of the fuse! Tip: use pins to help hold it while the glue set. Congratulations, you are all done! Your R3D-min should now look similar to the one below: 18
19 Other Information: CG 2 from wing spar (carbon fiber rod). Throws As much as possible without stressing your servos. More than 45-degress in each direction is recommended. This is designed to go in the elevator. o We no longer include double sided foam tape. Instead we include extra Velcro to mount your ESC and Receiver. 20
