2 Page 2 Creating your Second Life Account If you have yet to create your Second Life account, please do so via the NMC Website: and select the Create My Account link. Here you will be able to create your account and join the NMC Group at the same time. If you have already created a Second Life account, you can join the NMC Group from and select the Join the NMC Community link. Create your Second Life account by filling in the information on the screen. Choosing your avatar name is a very important part of your online identity. Once you decide on a name, your avatar name cannot be changed. If you are using your Second Life account for an academic activity, you will want to use some variation of your real first name so others recognize you. Second Life is case-sensitive! Tip: If you get repeated messages stating that your choice is taken, try changing your first name. The primary Second Life grid is designated as an adult grid. You are asked to enter your birthdate to confirm that you are older than 18.

3 Page 3 Joining the NMC Community is required to access the Seton Hall University Island in Second Life. Make certain that the box is checked next to this field. Seton Hall University is an affiliate of the New Media Consortium (NMC). Please enter the appropriate information in the Affiliation section. Your Second Life Account has been created! A confirming will be sent to the address you provided along with information on downloading the Second Life Client. Make sure to keep this information someplace safe!

4 Page 4 Check your for a message from NMC containing your password and a link to download the Second Life client. You will want to keep this someplace handy in case you forget your username and password. Take the time to read the contents for there are a number of handy links to helpful information and places. If you have downloaded the Second Life application from the link provided in this , you can skip the next step however you will want to pick up on page 7, Second Life First Login.

5 Page 5 Second Life Client Download From click on Download Now. Windows, Macintosh, and Linux versions of the Second Life client are available for download. Save the file to your computer Launch the Setup file to install the application.

7 Page 7 Second Life First Login Enter your Avatar name, Password, and click on the Connect button. Accept the Terms of Service agreement Read the Community Standards

8 Page 8 When you land in-world, you will be at the NMC Welcome Center Follow the Orange Arrows on the ground as you learn to navigate and communicate in Second Life! Create a Landmark from the World menu so that you can quickly return to the NMC Orientation Island. A list of your landmarks is available from the Inventory button.

9 Page 9 Joining the NMC Members Group To visit Salt Marsh Dynamics on the Seton Hall University Island, you will need to join the NMC Members group. Joining the NMC Members group is a two-step process. The first step was checking I wish to join the NMC Community in Second Life when you created your Second Life Avatar. The second step to joining the NMC Members group is to find the group in Second Life and join the group. To Join the NMC Members Group, select from the tool bar at the bottom of the page Select the Groups tab at the top of the page Search for NMC Members Select NMC Members

10 Page 10 Select View Full Profile Click Join the NMC ($0) You will be asked to confirm that you want to join the NMC Members group. Select Join A confirmation message will appear in the upper right corner when you have been added to the NMC Members group.

11 Page 11 Finding Important Places for Your Course To find the Seton Hall Island, select from the toolbar at the bottom of the page. Search for Seton Hall Select Teleport to visit the Seton Hall Island. You will be transported to the Pirate Welcome Center. You will want to head southeast towards the shoreline or you can click on the teleport board at the Welcome Center. Once at Pirate Marsh, start at the Visitor Center and right click on the Begin Here signboard.
