2 Japan, Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto, August 8, 2017 Gregory Schmidt, Editor for technology and pop culture New York Times 620 Eighth Avenue, New York, NY Dear Gregory, I would like to suggest to you a feature story on the Nintendo World Championships The Nintendo World Championships will be returning again for the first time since After Nintendo s performance with the Wii U, Nintendo has struck gold with its Nintendo Switch, which will be played at the Nintendo World Championships The Nintendo World Championships 2017 will begin with qualifying rounds in late August followed by the live Nintendo World Championships 2017 at the Manhattan Center's Grand Ballroom in New York. 2 Nintendo will showcase its fun new Switch titles as players compete via in a variety of highly rated Nintendo games including Splatoon 2, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and the upcoming Metroid: Samus Returns on the Nintendo 3DS. 3 This would be a great story to show Nintendo and their return to the world stage as a global games competitor. 3 Japan, Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto, History 1 Level 1 - Learning the ropes Nintendo as it is today can trace its long history as an entertainment company all the way back to 1889 in Shimogyo-Ku, Kyoto, Japan where Fusajiro Yamauchi started the company to sell playing cards called Hanafuda cards. In 1902, it broke into a western market. Up until 1963, Nintendo sold different playing cards, some being Disney themed. It went through several changes in names until it became known simply as Nintendo Co. Ltd. Level 2 - Gaining Steam It was in the 1970 s that Nintendo began to expand its entertainment to electronic games. In 1973, Nintendo created the Laser Clay Shooting System, followed by TV Game 15 and TV Game 6 in 1977 as its first home video game machines. As Nintendo was growing in the west, it made ground in North America by establishing Nintendo of America in New York, U.S.A in It was in 1981 that the classic Donkey Kong arcade machine made its way to arcades. Level 3 - Taking Full Control It was in 1983 that Nintendo released its first home console system that would play a variety of different cartridge based games, the Super Famicom System. It was in 1985 that Nintendo released it outside of Japan and called it the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). That same year, Super Mario Brothers was released. Level 4 - Playing Like Experts Having found success in Japan and around the world with the NES, Nintendo followed up with its successor called the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in A year prior to the release of the SNES, Nintendo released its first portable system called the Gameboy. In 1996, Nintendo would go on to release the first 64-bit system called the Nintendo 64. Released for the Nintendo 64 was the critically acclaimed Zelda title, Ocarina of Time, in The new millennium saw the release of the Gamecube as well as the release of the Gameboy Advance in In 2002, Satoru Iwata took over as president. During Iwata s time, Nintendo took a more casual approach to its systems and games saw the release of Nintendo DS followed by the Wii in Nintendo released the first portable 3D system called the Nintendo 3DS in 2011 and the Wii U in Level 5 - The Game Changes Tatsumi Kimishima became the president of Nintendo after the untimely death of Satoru Iwata in For the first time, Nintendo entered the mobile phone market with its first mobile game called Miitomo in In March of 2017, Nintendo released a home console-portable hybrid system, the Nintendo Switch.

5 Japan, Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto, Tatsumi Kimishima 1 Representative Director and President Tatsumi Kimishima is the current president of Nintendo Company Ltd. 2 He was promoted to president in September of 2015 after the late Satoru Iwata. Kimishima has experience in corporate analysis, general affairs, and human resource concerns. 3 Kimishima has 27 years of experience in banking and managing money. 4 Prior to being promoted to president, Kimishima was a managing director at Nintendo of Japan from 2013 to He joined Nintendo of America in January 2002 and too the position of president. 6 Before arriving at Nintendo, Kimishima was the Chief Financial Officer at The Pokemon Company in 2000 before taking on the position of president at Pokemon USA in Before Kimishima joined the Nintendo family, he worked at Sanwa Bank since Tatsumi Kimishima is a graduate of Hitotsubashi University. 9

The gulf courses in Wii Gulf are inspired by the designs from the Golf on the original NES. 7 There is a Gameboy so durable that it survived a bombing in the Gulf War. 7

Qualifying rounds will take place in late August. Nintendo invites players from around the world to compete in New York at the Manhattan Center s Grand Ballroom in various challenges from a selection of Nintendo games. The top 16 qualifying players from two ages brackets will compete to become the 2017 Nintendo World Champion. Players will face challenges from Mario Odyssey, Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and Metroid: Samus Returns along with many others. In order to participate in this event, competitors will need to attend qualifier rounds in Best Buys around the country. The 12 and under bracket will compete for the best time in the Luigi's Mansion stage in Mario Kart 7. The 13 and older crowd will compete as Bowser on the Bowse 1 Castle stage.
