History of Games In 1952 Alexander Sandy Douglas created the first graphical computer game of Tic-Tac-Toe on a EDSAC known as "OXO." This game was a very simple design and didn t have a video or movement apart from the pixels on the screen inputting the x or o when the player selects it. In 1958 William Higginbotham created the first ever video game Tennis for Two. This was a two player game controlled by two controllers that have a dial and a button on. The player would press the button when the tennis ball got to their side of the screen and it would hit the ball back to the other person. In 1962 Steve Russell creates "SpaceWar!" and releases it in February This game is considered the first game intended for computers. This game involved two space ships, one being the player and another being the computer trying to fire at you. The aim of the game is to avoid the black hole in the middle while trying to destroy the opponent. In 1971 Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney create the first arcade game called "Computer Space." This game was very similar to Space Wars! And has the same concept. This was the first arcade game and it was also the first commercially available video game. Between 1972 and 1982 a lot of games started being released for different gaming consoles including arcade machines and home consoles. These games included, Pong, the first commercial video game in Space Invaders was released in Japan on an arcade machine in The computer games Astroid and Lunar Lander were released by Atari in Pac-Man (one of the most famous arcade games) was released also in 2 Casey-Jo Kenny

saw the release of Donkey Kong. The first arcade game to have a fleshed out back story and a damsel in distress was the year the game Tetris was released, this game was recognized worldwide for being a fun little arcade game where you rotate shapes in the air as they fall down to fit them into a specific place. Super Mario Brothers for the NES console system is released in Packaged with the NES console and also sold separately, over 40 million copies of the game are sold as of It's success resulted in multiple sequels being developed, including Super Mario Bros 2 in 1986 and Super Mario Bros 3 in From here thousands and thousands of more games kept being released each one with newer technology and a deeper story and better controls and AI and many more features that kept being released each year. Some of the more noticeable releases are, Zelda which was first released in 1986, the first Final Fantasy game was released in Sid Meier s Civilisation was released in The PC game DOOM was released in 1993 and is thought of as a turning point for first person shooters and for computer games in general. Warcraft was released in 1994 and was the start of a very successful franchise for the company Blizzard Entertainment. New and improved games kept being made and released every year and there are far too many to list them all in here. 3 Casey-Jo Kenny

History of Consoles The first ever home console was the Magnavox Odyssey which was released in 1972 and was discontinued in The Magnavox Odyssey was a very simple console. The controllers, which were designed to sit on a flat surface. The layout of the controller was a button marked Reset on the top of the controller and three knobs: one on the right side of the controller, and two on the left with one extending from the other. This had games such as Table Tennis, Analogic and Submarine. Considered to be the 1 st generation of consoles. The 2 nd generation of consoles are the Atari VCS in 1977 and the Vectrex were released in the year The controllers for both of these consoles were more user-friendly than the Magnavox Odyssey. They consisted of a joy stick of some kind and a couple of buttons. These consoles had games such as Space Wars, Bezerk, Scramble and many more. The 3 rd generation of consoles brought around the first console from Nintendo, The NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) in And the Sega Master System in This is where the first proper two handed controllers took off. Being small enough to fit into your hands and having buttons that you need both hands to press. Unlike the previous consoles these controllers had a d-pad instead of a joystick, which the user uses to move around and 2 buttons used to do actions. The NES had games such as Mario, Kirby, and Zelda. And the Sega Master System had games such as Wonder Boy, Double Dragon and Sonic. The 4 th Generation of consoles featured consoles from the same two companies as the last generation. The new and improved consoles were called the Sega Mega Drive in 1989 and the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) in These consoles had a much better GUI and made the console much easier to play. The games where a lot more complex and had better graphics and story. The controllers were also improved in shape to fit into the users hand better. This made the console easier to play. Following the same component design as the last console both of these controllers featured a d-pad and a couple of 4 Casey-Jo Kenny

buttons. The SNES was also the first console to include a different colour for each of the buttons on the controller. The 5 th Generation of console brought about the first console from the now extremely popular company Sony. The PS1 (PlayStation 1) was released in The Sega Saturn was released in 1995 and the Nintendo 64 was released in These consoles are still widely used by people in retro gaming to this day. The PS1 was a new innovation for consoles. It was the first console to have a disk drive and to use disks to store the games on rather than cartridges. The controller also had a completely new layout and controls. It featured a unique shape to fit into the users hand better and featured 2 joy sticks (typically used one for moving the player and another for looking around) It also included a d- pad and 4 buttons. Personally I think that this console changed the way that all consoles would be created in the feature. The Sega Saturn was very similar to the Sega Mega Drive in terms of layout for the controllers etc. The difference however was how the Sega Saturn had a CD drive instead of a cartridge. The Nintendo 64 was still using cartridges for the games. However, the controller design for this console was very unique. It had a joy stick located in the center of the controller and it consisted of 3 areas to put your hand. It also had a d-pad and quite a few buttons. The 6 th Generation of consoles were the PS2 (PlayStation 2) released in 2000, Nintendo GameCube released in 2001 and the first console from Microsoft the Xbox also released in The PS2 was very similar to the PS1 however it had much better specs (graphics, speed, capability etc.) This console also had the ability to play online with other people around the world on select games. The Nintendo GameCube was much like the Nintendo 64 but more powerful. The console was less weird featuring only two areas to hold the controller instead of three, it also had less buttons. The disks used by the GameCube where much smaller than normal disks so that the console itself could be smaller. The Xbox was the main competitor to the PS2. The consoles where very similar in design and most of the games that were released were made for both consoles. The difference came really came down to the GUI and the controller design. The Xbox had a more spread out controller design. The Xbox also had online play much like the PS1. 5 Casey-Jo Kenny

The 7 th Generation of console brought about the Xbox 360 which was released in The PS3 (PlayStation 3) was released in 2006 and the Nintendo Wii was also released in The Xbox 360 was similar to the original Xbox however it was much sleeker. The design of the console was smooth and cleaner and it also featured the first wireless controller. The PS3 is a much sleeker version of the PS2, the console itself has a much smoother casing, however the first PS3 was quite bulky and very heavy. This console also had wireless controllers. The Nintendo Wii was an extremely unique console, an entirely new design and a revolutionary style of gaming. It had a very small console body that stood up next to your tv. It also featured a sensor which you plug into the console and position on your tv. The controller that you have was a thing white rectangle that had a sensor on it and had some buttons. This console introduced motion tracking using the controller and allowed the player to stand up and play the games by moving their body and the controller in different directions (without pressing buttons). The 8 th Generation of console is the Wii U which was released in The Xbox One which was released in 2013, the PS4 (PlayStation 4) which was also released in These consoles didn t change much in design than the previous ones, all that really changed was the capability of the console and how well it ran and the better games etc. The Wii U however had a slightly different design than the previous Wii. This console doesn t focus on motion control as much as the previous one. Also on this controller it features a screen which can also be used to play the game on and allows more features to be on the controller as well as the screen. The 9 th Generation of console will bring us the PS4 Pro and the Xbox Scorpio which are aimed to be released in This consoles feel more like an 8.5 generation rather than a 9 due to the fact they aren t an entirely new console, they have the same design and games. However they have better specs and hardware. These consoles are supposed to be able to be played in 4K. The PS4 pro also has a VR headset that you are able to use with the console and it s meant to immerse you in the games more than just a controller. The Xbox One S is much 40% than the previous Xbox One. It also has an integrated power supply unlike the previous Xbox. You are also able to design the controller you get to have specific colours. 6 Casey-Jo Kenny

Features of Consoles Controllers The controllers of consoles have been adapting and have been redesigned many times over the years until reaching the design they are now. The controllers fit in the users hands well and have all the buttons at a fingers reach. This is considered by some to be much easier than playing a game with say a keyboard and mouse because the buttons are few and simple where as a keyboard control could have many more buttons doing separate things and it could be considered harder to remember and use them. Range of Games The Range of the games that are available for all the consoles is massive. This is good because it means that no matter then console (apart from the Nintendo Consoles) you will likely get the game that you want to play due to the game developer wanting a wider audience for their games. Online Features (On the newer consoles) From the 6 th Generation of console upwards there is an online play feature. This allows the user on some specific games to play online with other people from the around the world. This is a good thing because it means you are able to play games with your friends without having to do split screen (which sometimes distorts the screen a little and makes the game harder to see). Usually online costs for most consoles. Multiplayer (Split Screen) With games that are two player there is an option to do multiplayer split screen. This means that more than one person can play a game at the same time (either against each other or as a team) only using one console. This is a good thing because it means that they don t need more than one console or game saving the user money and allowing them to play together. 7 Casey-Jo Kenny

Easy to set up and simple to play With most consoles all you really have to do to set it up is plug it in and follow the wizard that appears and then you are ready to play. This is so much easier for most people to follow and set up than a PC which requires previous knowledge to get it setup correctly. This is a good thing because it means that nearly anyone from about 10+ can set up a console and play it straight away without needing help from anyone else. Cheap Games (Pre-owned) Although mainstream games are very expensive when they first come out there is such a huge community behind the consoles which means that there are so many shops where people bring in the games they own and trade them in for money. This means that you are able to get games that were pre-owned and play them for cheaper than buying them brand new. Usually the games will be in pretty good condition and you can hardly tell they are pre-owned. Free Games If you have the membership on the console that you own there are free games available to download every month. This is good because it means you get a chance to play different games for free which saves you lots of money. But it also gives you the chance to play games you wouldn t always buy for yourself and lets you try new things before you buy them. Cheaper than a PC A console is roughly 400 for the whole thing, which is extremely cheap when you take the parts into consideration. A basic PC that you ve built yourself will cost roughly the same. However if you re wanting to build a powerful PC you re looking at spending at least 1000 just on parts. The console comes all together, pre-built and is very simple, easy and cheap. Same Graphics on every console (no individual tweaking) Also unlike PC you aren t able to take parts of your console out and replace them with better parts. Such as a better graphics card etc. this means that when you re playing a game online, every person you are playing with has roughly the same specs you have (render distance, fps etc.) this allows for fair playing and doesn t give anyone an advantage because they have better parts. 8 Casey-Jo Kenny

Limitations of Consoles Cant upgrade parts The issue with consoles is that you are stuck with the parts that you have when you buy the console. You are unable to take the console apart and upgraded it with better parts (graphics card etc.) This is a problem because it means that you have to wait till a brand new console comes out before you are able to get anything better than what you already have. This is also considered expensive because if they bring out a new console just to improve the graphics, you then have to spend a lot of money on a new console than just buying a new graphics card like you can on a PC. Online Subscription If you want to use the internet on a console to play an online game you have to pay a recurring subscription fee which is about 40 a year or 6 a month roughly. This is a bad thing because not only do you have to pay 30+ for the game you then have to pay to be able to play it properly and online. Overheats If you re playing a console for a long time they tend to overheat. This is bad because it means you will probably have to switch the console off for a while or it could even start to ruin the console itself due to heating different components and wearing them down. Less Power Due to not being able to upgrade to better (more expensive) parts the consoles are limited to the power that they have and this is considerably less than a PC. This means that the FPS of games is usually locked at roughly 30 where as a PC has 60+. This makes the games run a lot clunkier and the graphics don t look as smooth. 9 Casey-Jo Kenny

Arcade Platforms History of Arcade Platforms The first ever commercially successful arcade machine was the two player Pong game. This is what kicked off the massive chain of arcade machines. In 1978 Taito Corp released Space Invaders. This game took over a year to develop and has gone on to be one of the most popular arcade games ever even to this date. In 1981 Donkey Kong was one of the first ever 2D platform games and was the first ever game to have a full fleshed out storyline and a damsel in distress. Between 1983 and 1990 the arcade scene calmed down a lot with many similar games being produced and a Moral fight against video games from concerned parents almost killed the industry completely. In 1991 Capcon released Street Fighter which brought a second wind to the arcade machine time. This brought on many other fighting games such as Mortal Kombat and Virtual Fighter. From 2000 more user friendly arcade machines and controls started to become more popular. With Sega bringing out a flight simulator game called Strike Fighter out that had the user sit in a chair similar to a plane. Then Nintendo used built in cameras to capture pictures of the users to make them more involved in the game. In 2007 a Deal or No Deal game used footage from the actual show to make the games more realistic saw the release of 4D arcade machines such as Dark Escape 4D this combined surround sound, 3D glasses, vibrations, a heart rate monitor and bursts of air to make a more realistic and thrilling horror shooter game. 10 Casey-Jo Kenny

Features of Arcade Platforms Sociable Using arcade machines is a lot more social than the consoles now a days. The reason for this is because the arcade games are in arcades out in town so if you want to play the games you need to go out of your house and into the arcade. This means you are meeting more people and you have chance to talk to more people than the consoles now a days which can be played at home in your bedroom. Moving Cabinets The newer arcade machines have different seats and style of moving aspects to enhance the gaming experience of the user. For example you can get some arcade machines where the user lies down on the seat and the game is a rollercoaster style simulator and the chair moves to follow the track of the game. Other types of games could be racing games where the chair is the car seat and there is a steering wheel and pedals that the user uses to control the car and the chair moves as the car moves. Simple Controls and buttons The controls of the arcade machines are very simple, usually consisting of a joystick and a couple of buttons. This is a good thing because it is easy to play for people who haven t played the game before and people will understand the controls quickly. The buttons also usually have a one word description of what it does printed onto the case around the button. This is a lot easier than say a keyboard or controller to play games because there are only a few buttons and one joy stick rather than loads of buttons which do different things on different games. 11 Casey-Jo Kenny

Co-Op Two Player Two player arcade machines allow for two player to play on the machine at once on either 1v1 games or a game where both players have to work together to win the game. This allows for a lot of different games to be created and it makes the whole thing a lot more social and fun to play when you have the ability to play with someone else. Range of different games There are a range of different arcade games and different styles of games that are available to play. There are shooting games, racing games, all the way to sports games and dancing games. This allows for an extremely wide audience of people to be interested in these machines and being able to play them. This is a huge feature because the amount of content and choice allows for people to always have something to do. Also all the different styles of game have a different style of cabinet and components that match that genre personally. For example, dancing games have a dance floor that are pressured so that when you step on that area it comes up on the computer. The shooting games could have guns that you hold and point at the screen and press the trigger to fire. Sports games could be the basketball game where you throw a ball into a basket and a sensor or the basket alerts you if the ball goes through it. 12 Casey-Jo Kenny

Limitations of Arcade Platforms Spending too much money The issue with the arcade machines is that you need to insert money into the machine in order to play the game. Some games could become addicting to people and could cause them to spend a lot of money. This is bad because it is a lot of wasted money going on a game machine. Addictive The arcade game can become very addictive to try and beat your previous score or to complete the entire game. This is an issue because it means you spend a lot of time and money on the arcade machine. This is bad because you re wasting your money and wasting your time when you can spend it doing something better. The older controls were difficult to use (The paddle) The older style of controls that were used on arcade machines where very fiddly and difficult to control despite their simple design. The paddle in particular was difficult because you couldn t tell how sensitive it was and when you tried to move it you tended to over move. This is much harder than the controls that are used more now a days which is usually an analogue stick and a few buttons. Meeting strangers Because you have to go out into the arcade to play theses games it means anyone can go out to these arcades also. This means you could meet anyone while out playing games. This is dangerous because it means anyone could turn up and start talking to you or try to befriend you and try to get you to leave with them. This is especially dangerous for younger kids. 13 Casey-Jo Kenny

Can t use it at home One major downside of arcade machines is that you can t have and play them at home. This means you are only able to play the games you want when you re able to travel to the arcade and also only when the arcade is open. This is a issue because you might not be able to go out or you want to play your game past a certain time but due to not being able to get to the arcade you cant. This is unlike many other consoles that you plug in at home and are able to play whenever you want. Might be occupied by others so you have to wait Due to the arcade machines being in a public place there will be many different people who have come and want to play the same games as you. Due to this there might be a queue for the game that you want to play and this means you ll have to wait to play it. This can be an issue because if you have a limited time while you are out if you have to wait ages to play the game you won t have as much time as you would if the game was only yours at home. You can t pause it Due to you having to put money in the game the manufacturers are only going to give you a limited time of playing the game, this could be till you die or till you run out of time. Due to this you are unable to pause the game say if you need a bathroom break or need to do something for a minute. This is a problem because if you don t need to stop you are going to have to leave the game and let the time run out, meaning you waste the money that you put in the game. 14 Casey-Jo Kenny

Doesn t save - Continuing from the last issue, if you do happen to die or run out of time then that s complete game over. There isn t a save option due to so many different people playing the same arcade machine. The only type of thing you can save is your high score. No matter how far into the game you get you will always have to start back at the beginning next time. This is really annoying for most users due to the amount of time and money the spend on the consoles. 15 Casey-Jo Kenny

Pc Platforms Features of PC Platforms Upgradable Every PC that you buy can be taken apart and rebuilt again. This is a good thing because you can take out parts that are outdated and replace them with the newly released parts. This means that you can always make your pc better and you don t need to buy a whole new pc like you do with a console. This sometimes can be cheaper because some parts are much less money than buying a new computer and you can replace only the parts that need replacing. Suited for each individual need You are able to buy a computer that is suited for the need of the user. For example, if someone is just using a computer to use Microsoft office and browse the internet, they will only need a 200 (roughly) computer due to not needing much CPU power or much graphic power. However someone who plays games all the time and does big graphic projects such as web design is going to need a much more powerful computer that can cost This is good because it means the computer is specific to the person using it and that they only have to spend the money that they need to spend. Good Graphics If you have a decent computer with a decent graphics card then you can get really good graphics on your games or design programs. This is really good because it allows the user to get more emerged in what they are doing. This is because if you are looking at something that is really pretty/smooth 16 Casey-Jo Kenny

etc. then you want to look at it more and it makes working with it easy. If your graphics were bad you wouldn t want to keep doing what you were doing. Emulators The good thing about PC s are that you can run emulating programs which allow you to run games or programs that were meant for a different platform on your computer. For example, you can get an emulator that allows you to run PS2 games on your PC meaning you have access to all of the games of all different consoles on one platform. Making it much cheaper (most old emulation programs/games can be found for free) and much less hassle to have to own loads of different consoles etc. Customized Settings for games etc. Another good feature of having a PC is that depending on what hardware you have (mainly the graphic card) you can set games to run so that it suits the power your computer has. For example, if you had a pretty average computer you would be able to run your games on average graphics which means the game will run smooth although it might not look as nice as if you had an expensive computer and could set all your games to maximum graphics. This is good because it lets anyone play games and isn t specific to a certain hardware type. Game Mods When using a PC is it so much easier to Mod your games than console. The reason for this is because you are able to access the game files and that means you can edit them and add things in. This is good because it means you can add a lot more content to your game and you can make it fun even after you have completed the game. 17 Casey-Jo Kenny

Limitations of PC Platforms Expensive for a good PC If you want a really good computer you will need to spend a lot of money for one due to having to buy all of the good parts. This can cost about at least. This is an issue because most people don t have that much money to spend on a computer and it means that if someone who doesn t have much money wants a computer they will have to settle for one that isn t as good and if they are playing games etc. this could mean they are at a disadvantage due to things such as FPS and graphics. Compatibility Issues Things such as games and programs that were released years ago could have compatibility issues and the programs might not run. For example, games and programs that were designed for Windows XP might not work with windows 10 because the system coding might be different and it could have issues with the hardware because it is too powerful for the game/program. Emulation Emulation is the use of an application program or device to imitate the behaviour of another program or device. For example, on your PC you can get different emulators that allow you to mimic that console on your PC. You can get a PS2 emulator that allows you to play PS2 game such as Need for Speed, Shadow of the Colossus and Final Fantasy. This allows you to play games from your childhood or retro games that you want to try out without the hassle of having to buy a console for all of the games. 18 Casey-Jo Kenny

Mobile Gaming Platforms/Mobile Devices Mobile gaming platforms are devices such as Mobile phones are designed for making phone calls, not gaming but in the early 90 s Hagenuk created one game Tetris. Tetris involved the player spinning falling blocks and making them fit into slots at the bottom of the screen made up of other blocks. Another game that was created was snake which is a block snake moving around the screen controlled by the user that had to collect little blocks of food. Features of Mobile Gaming Platforms and Mobile Devices Portable Both of these types of devices are able to be moved around and are usually small enough to go in your pocket or your bag. This means that you are able to play games on the go and can use them anywhere. 3D without glasses Most new mobile gaming and mobile phones have technology that allows the games on them to have 3D graphics. This makes the game much nicer to play. Better battery now a days The new versions of these devices have a much longer battery life which can last about 4 hours of constant game play. This means that if you re traveling on a train ride or something similar you have quite a long time of gameplay to keep you entertained. Touch Screen or Button Controls The controls of both of these devices is user friendly, some of the devices have touchscreen mixed with buttons. This allows the user to control the games in different ways and adds to the overall interactive style of the game and the devices. Speakers can be connected to the phone (wired or Bluetooth) - These devices have the ability to connect speakers to them so that you can have better sound, if you are at home you can connect speakers so that the sound plays outloud louder than the 19 Casey-Jo Kenny

device itself would play the sound. If you were on the go you could plug in headphones so that everyone around you didn t have to hear the games you were playing. Jailbreak to pirate games onto the device (Mobile Phone only) With some mobile devices you can jailbreak them which allows you to download games that you would normally pay for, for free. This is considered a good thing for some people because they don t have to waste loads of money on games from phones. However it is considered a limitation for the developers because it means people aren t paying for their games and they won t make as much money as they thought they would. Limitations of Mobile Gaming Platforms and Mobile Devices Easily broken when dropped Due to the devices being portable this means that they can be dropped or stood on (if left on the floor) etc. This makes the devices much more likely to be broken than say a PC or console. This can be a problem because if they break they are expensive to fix or to buy a completely new device. Battery dies Due to not being plugged in all the time the battery life slowly starts to die the minute it is unplugged. If you don t have your charger with you and your device dies then you are stuck without it until you get back to somewhere you can plug it in. This is an issue because it could die in the middle of a game and you lose your progress. Limited Storage Capacity - Because these devices are small and portable there is limited storage space on the device. This is an issue because you will only be able to hold so much data. This means that you might have to delete other games to install new ones and that you might run out of save room when you are playing a game so you won t be able to save it. Expensive Games (Platform Only) Due to the gaming platform games being stored on things such as the small disk cartridges etc. it can be expensive to buy them. Also because most of the games are quite big games and have a lot of content the storage of the disk has to be bigger meaning it is more expensive. 20 Casey-Jo Kenny

Fiddly Controls and Small Screen Due to the small screen and some of the devices being touchscreen the controls can be a little tricky. For example on some mobile devices the controls can end up taking up half of the screen and can get in the way of the game display. Or when they don t have a display of the controls and you have to try and remember where exactly the controls are. GPRS 3G/4G GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service This is lets you send data to another phone while doing other things such as making a call or sending text messages. GPRS is extremely slow and isn t used much anymore at all. 3G 3G has towers all over the world and your phone sends the data it wants to send over the internet to the tower and the tower then sends this to the destination that you want it to go to. This is a lot faster and securer than GPRS due to security protocols in place. 4G Is very similar to 3G but it is much faster and securer. Features of GPRS Allows data to be sent Provides network coverage for SMS Messages Allows phone calls to be made Delivery Reports Line not taken up for full duration of a call only when data is sent Limitations of GPRS Not as fast as 3G For most people nowadays this data connection is as slow as not really having an internet connection at all. This means no one will really want to use it. Features of 3G 21 Casey-Jo Kenny

Packets can be sent anywhere as long as the mobile device is connected Internet can be accessed almost anywhere in the country High speed connectivity More advanced software abilities Works on most advanced smart phones Limitations of 3G 4G is quicker and more advanced now, Wi-Fi is also a faster option 3G coverage cannot be guaranteed everywhere (blackspots) Slower speeds can be found in more populated areas Downloads can take a long time 22 Casey-Jo Kenny

Handheld TV Games A handheld TV game is an interactive device such as a controller that has the console built into it. This type of console doesn t have very big, story based games and is usually old arcade style games such as Sonic or PacMan. These consoles usually have a large library of small arcade games when you buy the device. Features of Handheld TV Games Cheap These devices are usually extremely cheap, you can buy one for around 5. This means you can get quite a lot of play time due to it having many different games for not a lot of money at all. Plug and Play All you have to do when you buy one of these devices is plug it into the TV and turn it on. Everything loads straight away and there isn t any set-up necessary. This is a good thing because it means anyone can play it and that if you only have like half an hour free you don t have to spend half of that sorting the device out so you can play it. Good for kids Due to its easy set-up and the simple controls it is good for kids. The reason for this is that it doesn t take any brain power to make the device work. Also due to the library of games there is hours of entertainment for young children. This devices are also hard to break due to them not being big and not having many components. Limitations of Handheld TV Games Poor Quality The games that come on this devices don t exactly have amazing graphics. This is usually because they are arcade games and all come in smoothed 8BIT graphic state. This is bad for some people because compared to games that are out nowadays it s quite disappointing. Limited to Game Library When you buy one of these devices you can only play the games that it comes with, there is no way to install a new game so that you can play it. This is bad because it means once you have 23 Casey-Jo Kenny

played all of the games there is not really any use for the device itself and you will have to buy a new device with different games. Specific Connectors These devices come with a white and yellow AV connector. This is an issue because most modern TVs don t have this type of connector anymore. This means you either need to find an older TV or spend more money on an adapter for AV to HDMI. TV Games TV games are games that are provided through your TV provider. There are many different games that suit both adults and children. They are more aimed at people who have a few minutes to waste than someone who actually really enjoys playing games due to their simple content and no in-depth story. You would access these games by clicking a button on your TV controller and sometimes you would have to pay to unlock games or levels in a game. Features of TV Games Click and Play - These types of games are good for when you re bored and have a couple of minutes to spare. The reason for this is that you can just click a button on your controller and the games appear. There is no set-up needed. Easy to Use The controls for most of these games are similar and are very easy to work out and use without really needing instructions. This allows for nearly anyone to be able to work out how the play the games and start right away. Mostly for Children Most of the games that are on these TVs are cartoon styled and designed for kids to play when they are bored. This means there s always something for a child to do and that you don t have to worry about the games being kid friendly etc. (Any games that aren t tend to need the TV pin to play) No Downloads When you play this games you don t have to download all of the files and set them up etc. this saves a lot of time and saves a lot of space on your TV box because if you play loads of different games you don t have to download them all. 24 Casey-Jo Kenny

Limitations of TV Games Limited Multiplayer Due to the controls being the TV remote and the games being through a TV box there isn t really a multiplayer option. This is bad because it means you can t really play with your friends. The only real style of multiplayer on TV games is the users taking turns. Lots of Adverts Due to most of the games being free to play there are quite a lot of adverts involved when you play the game. This can get really annoying because you are always having to watch adverts in the middle of playing the game. No Story Because this games have no downloading or take up much space the story is never really there. These types of games are usually platform games or puzzle games that require little storyline. This can be quite boring for some players. DVD Games Interactive DVD games are games that you play by putting a DVD into your DVD player. These games are usually based on popular TV programmes such as Deal or No Deal and they have limited interactivity due to the being controlled by a TV remote and storing all of the data on a DVD. These types of games are more aimed at families who want to spend time together and do something fun rather than gamers. Features of DVD Games Cheap Because these games are on a DVD you don t have to waste money to buy an expensive console and all you need is a DVD player which most households have. This saves the user money because DVDs tend to be quite cheap ( 5 roughly). Good for Families This type of game is good to sit around the TV with the family and spend some time together due to the style of game it is, its light hearted and doesn t take much effort and can be fun and competitive to play compared to an in-depth story game that only one person can really play on a PC or console. Good to Pass Time This types of games are good if you ve got like half an hour to spare and need something to do 25 Casey-Jo Kenny

that s fun and isn t going to get you engrossed in the game and want you to carry on and keep playing for hours (like some other story games) Limitations of DVD Games No Online There are no online options with this type of game. This is because of it being ran on a DVD player. This is a bad thing because you re limited to playing with the people in your house that are sat around the TV with you. Not much interactivity These types of games don t really have much in the way of interactivity, the way you usually play these games is watch the scene and then select an option or something similar to that, there isn t really games in the way of platform games etc. Very Simple Games Most DVD games don t really have any story to them. They usually are games based of a TV show and can be games like quiz shows, bingo or puzzle games. This could make them quite boring for a lot of people and makes them not very interesting. 26 Casey-Jo Kenny
