3 Games4Health Background The Games4Health Challenge is a student app and game design competition inspired by Games4Soul, a DHX Labs Production, and hosted by the University of Utah s Sorenson Center for Discovery & Innovation at the David Eccles School of Business. The competition gives students the opportunity to discover, design and develop innovations through an entrepreneurial process, and transform the way we care for ourselves and each other. Teams are challenged to solve an important healthcare problem, and to articulate the solution from three perspectives: a business perspective, a design perspective and a social media perspective. Sixty thousand dollars in prize money is available in the 2018 Games4Health Challenge. There are four challenge categories, each with prizes of $5,000, $3,000 and $1,000 for 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd places, respectively, and two additional prize categories. The $1,000 People s Choice award will go to the team that receives the most social media votes, and teams that attend the 2018 Games4Health Arcade have the opportunity to win the $1,000 Arcade Favorite prize. The Games4Health Challenge mobilizes students across the globe who are aspiring to be entrepreneurs with a desire to improve health outcomes by leveraging emerging digital health tools and technologies. The University of Utah s digital game development graduate school is ranked #1 in the nation. The David Eccles School of Business is rated the #1 school for aspiring entrepreneurs, and the University of Utah s School of Medicine is ranked #1 for healthcare quality and outcomes in the United States. There is no other university or hospital in the country with the same mix of innovation in gaming, business and healthcare. Eligibility Each participating team is required to have at least one team member who is a currently enrolled student. This student must perform a primary role in the game or app design and/or business model development. Other team members can come from any background or level of expertise. Team members may represent a variety of disciplines, such as software development, marketing and medicine. Teams may compete from anywhere in the world. This is a global, online competition. Students from across the globe may participate. In past years, students from 13 different countries have competed. Games4Health is an opportunity to be part of a global effort to improve health. 3

4 How it Works The Games4Health Challenge is a progressive competition. The competition is designed to challenge teams to communicate an idea in three different formats. Participants will submit three separate Minimum Viable Products (MVP), leveling up as each required submission is completed and judged. Each MVP should represent the same idea and content. Moving through Levels II - IV, teams must submit a one-page Executive Summary, a Mockup, and a Video. Examples of each MVP can be found in the Appendix of this competition packet. Submissions that achieve Level IV will be judged by a select panel of healthcare, gaming and business professionals. There are deadlines for each individual MVP, but teams may accelerate gameplay and advance through Levels I IV as quickly as they choose. Level I - Registration Registration closes January 8, 2018 (11:59 p.m. CST) Register here: Registration for the 2018 Games4Health Challenge is open between October 1, 2017 and January 8, Each individual team member must register to receive prize money, and each team member must register with the same team name. Prize money will be awarded to individual members of a team. Games4Health will not disburse prize money to team members who are not registered. To register, create an account at input your team name and choose a challenge category. The challenge categories are outlined at the end of the How it Works section. There are four individual challenges in the 2018 Games4Health Challenge. All the challenges address broad areas of health and healthcare: Chronic Condition, Clinical, Fitness, and Mental Wellbeing. After registering, you may view your team s details and competition progress on your team s Games4Health dashboard. Level II Executive Summary Submission Deadline for the Executive Summary is January 8, 2018 (11:59 p.m. CST) Each team must fill out and submit a one-page Executive Summary form. Executive Summaries should describe your team s idea from a business perspective. The link to the Games4Health Executive Summary form can be found on your team s dashboard, and the Executive Summary will be automatically submitted upon completion. 4

Level III Design Mockup Submission Deadline for the Design Mockup is February 5, 2018 (11:59 p.m. CST) Each team must submit a mockup using the design tool, InVision. Mockups should show your team s Executive Summary from a design perspective. Mockups must satisfy the following criteria: 1) 10 or more screen shots. 2) Navigation must be user-friendly, intuitive and simple. 3) User interface must be aesthetically and graphically appealing. An example of an InVision mockup can be found in the Appendix. Level IV Video Submission Deadline for the Video is March 12, 2018 (11:59 p.m. CST) One 3-minute video is required for submission. The Video allows you to showcase your game in a creative way that captures your audience s attention and engages them on an emotional level. The Video should show your team s idea from a social media perspective, and convince them that your game or app will be a successful business opportunity. The video should demonstrate the game or app s purpose and capabilities, and motivate the viewer to want to immediately download the game or app. Video guidelines: The video must be 3 minutes or less in length. Games4Health will not accept video submissions that are greater than 3 minutes in length. All video content must be original. Absolutely no copyrighted materials may be used in the videos. This includes music, images downloaded from the internet, stock video, etc. that is not explicitly royalty-free and available for redistribution. Copyright, public domain and royalty free resources are listed in the Appendix. Teams may use public domain and/or royalty free music; however, it must be cited and used appropriately as specified in the Terms & Conditions. Video content may not include inappropriate language or images. Videos containing content deemed inappropriate by Games4Health staff will be disqualified. Video content criteria: 5

6 Provide screen shots, story board and wireframe to provide the look and feel of your game or app. Describe the revenue and business model to answer the questions of where and how you will make money. Explain the efficacy of your game or app and how you would test it in a rigorous manner to provide evidence of its efficacy. Describe the behavior change science embedded in your game or app in order to explain how you would get user adoption and how the game or app would change behavior to improve health. An example of a completed Games4Health Video can be found in the Appendix. Level V Arcade and Games4Health Rally and Dinner Games4Health Arcade, March 29, 2018 Games4Health Awards Rally and Dinner, March 30, 2018 Every team that submits an Executive Summary is invited to the Games4Health Arcade and Games4Health Rally Awards Dinner. The March 29 th, 2018 Arcade is an exhibit style event where teams set up and show their game or app. Teams that cannot be at the Arcade in person may Skype in and communicate with event attendees. Competition judges and corporate sponsors are invited to attend, and the event is open to the public. Arcade attendees cast their vote for their favorite Arcade game or app. The team with the most votes receives a $1,000 Arcade prize. The Games4Health Awards Rally is a celebration of the efforts of all participants, and free to attend. On March 30 th, teams, sponsors, judges and the Games4Health committee gather for the Rally and Awards Dinner. Following a keynote address, the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd -place winners in each of the challenge categories are announced. Because this is a global event, many teams may not be able to attend the Arcade and Rally. Attendance at these events is not required for a team to qualify for and receive prize money in the competition. All submissions that attain Level IV will be considered for the main challenge prizes, regardless of attendance at the Arcade and/or Rally. Each game or app submitted for competition must address one of these four challenges. Teams may enter more than one game into the competition, however the same game or app may not be entered in more than one challenge category. Each game must be submitted separately. If you need assistance, please contact the Games4Health committee at Fitness Challenge Research indicates that increasing physical activity and performing it on a consistent basis is the most effective therapy for most diseases including mental health and is the most reliable way to increase your happiness. Yet too few people are engaged in such activity and have begun to seek new digital health technologies to make fitness fun and engaging. Students competing in this challenge will be designing and creating apps and games that increase engagement in fitness. Submit an Idea for the Fitness Challenge Chronic Condition Challenge Two-thirds of all healthcare costs are associated with chronic conditions. Two-thirds of all Americans are overweight or obese, a comorbid condition that increases the risk and complications associated with diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular disease, mental illness, and other similar conditions. Students in this challenge will be adding the gaming mechanics and principles to the experience of managing a chronic condition to help people achieve better health outcomes at substantially lower costs. Submit an Idea to the Chronic Condition Challenge 7

8 Clinical Challenge Doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals have begun to embrace the use of various digital technologies in the practice of medicine. By doing so they can deliver a high value-added experience to patients in clinical and non- clinical environments to achieve the triple-aim of healthcare: affordable services with ubiquitous access, and high quality. In the Clinical Challenge, students will design and create apps and games that enable the same type of digital experience in healthcare that consumers experience in all other aspects of their lives. Submit an Idea to the Clinical Challenge Mental Wellbeing Challenge Emotional wellbeing affects every facet of our lives and has an even more profound impact on those with health conditions. Positive psychology, mindfulness and cognitive behavior therapy research indicates that mental wellbeing can be powerfully supported and improved by building particular skills. Competitive entries in this challenge should be grounded in peer-review research, have the potential to provide lasting user engagement, and should appeal to all adult age groups. 9 Challenge Judging Criteria The following criteria will be used to judge all submissions to determine first, second and third place winners. The criteria are the same for each of the four challenge categories, but each submission will only be judged relative to the other submissions in the same challenge category. Each question is rated on a consistent fivepoint scale: Research: strongly agree agree disagree strongly disagree 1. The game gathers research data that is used to improve the game and validate its effectiveness. Behavior: 2. The game has identified a clear targeted focus for behavior change. Commercialization: 3. There is a clear and effective plan to test the efficacy of the game/app. 4. There is a clear target market identified with reasonable purchasing criteria. 5. The target market is highly likely to pay (directly, indirectly, or through third-parties) for the game/app based upon the proposed revenue model. Gamification: 6. The game/app will emotionally engage the player/user. 7. The player/user will find the game/app's user experience and navigation simple, intuitive, and easy to use. 8. The game mechanics such as levels, incentives, social elements, narrative, etc. will ensure the game is fun and challenging. Arcade Favorite Judging There will be one winner of the Arcade Favorite prize, chosen during the March 29, 2018 Arcade event. Arcade attendees will vote to determine their favorite, and the team with the most votes wins. People s Choice Judging The People s Choice award will be chosen using Facebook voting. All video submissions will be loaded onto the Games4Health Facebook page, and whichever submission receives the most likes during the voting timeframe will win the People s Choice award. There will be one winner of the People s Choice award. Late votes will not be counted. Everyone is eligible to vote (participants included) for the People s Choice award. 9

Wherever possible, provide a quantitative answer to the questions. Problem: In one sentence describe clearly what health-related problem you are trying to solve. I am trying to help people who wish to better manage their weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Product: Briefly describe your ideal customer s experience with your product/solution (Describe your product/solution from your customer s view point). What companies are offering similar product/solutions and how is yours different? As a customer, I want to become healthier and exercise, but I have a hard time making time to exercise and I think it is boring. My experience with the Run4It app is fun and engaging. I download and set up a profile and an avatar by logging in through Facebook. Every time I open the app after the initial setup I see a dashboard for my profile and my avatar. Because I m logged in through Facebook, I can connect with my friends who have also downloaded the app. Run4It has several health challenges I can do with options to compete against my friends or on teams with my friends. The app keeps track of my challenges and points. I can choose to make my accomplishments public where my friends can see, or I can keep them private. Challenges range from running and hiking trails where speeds and distances are compared, to steps counted while playing basketball, tennis or another sport. I enjoy the benefits of fitness while bragging about my successes through the app. Fitbit is a major competitor. The difference is that Run4It offers challenges while Fitbit does not. Fitbit tracks physical activity and friends can see the participants activity platform, but 11

12 Fitbit is more about collecting and comparing data than being fun to overcome the problem of boredom. Process/Plan: On a scale of 1-10 (10 being most confident), how likely would your product or service be ready to take to market in one year? Charge companies $2 per click to advertise on the app and charge additional fees for certain challenges.
