2 Introduction GAME King's Quest (AGI) DEVELOPER Sierra On-Line YEARS COMPUTER PC This walkthrough makes it possible to complete King's Quest (AGI) with the maximum score while experiencing everything there is to experience in a single playthrough. The walkthrough must be followed faithfully and precisely from beginning to end. It is not for dipping into. Nor is it recommended to anyone who has yet to complete the game at least once. Ideally it should be turned to only when the player has otherwise explored the game world to their full satisfaction. Enjoy! Install the game. Before we start Delete any saved games you may have (every KQ1SG.* file in your KQ1 folder). If you are playing in DOSBox, set the program to Tandy mode (for best audio): 1. Go to your DOSBox folder (usually in C:\Program Files). 2. Open the file "dosbox.conf" in a text editor. 3. Change the line starting "machine=" to read "machine=tandy". 4. Save changes to the "dosbox.conf" file. 5. Close the file. About this walkthrough The Complete King's Quest (AGI) Walkthrough consists of a main path and many "diversions". A "diversion" is any action or set of actions that would ordinarily make it impossible to complete the game (at least with a full score). We will sidestep this problem by returning after each diversion to the point where we stepped off the main path. Throughout the walkthrough, messages cut from the final version of the game script appear in appropriate places, accompanied by a picture of a dagger. We will also be dabbling in some magic in order to reach the otherwise unreachable... The three golden rules 1. Do everything as directed. 2. Watch every "cut-scene". 3. Clear each text message once you have read it by pressing ENTER. 3 INTRODUCTION clarity, here is how they will be used. The walkthrough will begin with the creation of four saved game slots: "MAIN PATH" "DIVERSION" "OTHER" "BOOKMARK" "MAIN PATH" will be used for saving our progress along the main path, and always before embarking on a diversion. "DIVERSION" will be used only while pursuing a diversion. "OTHER" will be used for additional saving (usually while pursuing a diversion). You can save to "BOOKMARK" whenever you wish. Also save to "BOOKMARK" whenever you exit the game that way you will always know which saved game to restore when you resume your game. Feel free to create and use other saved game slots, but never disregard a Save Game or Restore Game direction in the walkthrough, and always make sure you do not overwrite the wrong saved game slot. We'll be going through this procedure many times in the course of this walkthrough. This is because certain characters in certain screens appear at random. When they do appear, they always do so at the same point on the screen. From now on whenever we want one of these characters to appear, the walkthrough will read simply "Get X to appear". This means you should complete steps 1 3 in the box above (substituting X for the dwarf). 74 Endnote The Tandy version of King's Quest (AGI) is perhaps the most enjoyable to play due to the enhanced soundtrack. But should you feel like completing this walkthrough again at some future date, you could try playing in Hercules, CGA, or VGA mode instead. To do this: 1. Go to your DOSBox folder (usually in C:\Program Files). 2. Open the file "dosbox.conf" in a text editor. 3. Change the line starting "machine=" to read either "machine=hercules" (note: due to the mechanics of the interface, Hercules mode would need creative interpreting of the walkthrough), "machine=cga", or "machine=vga". 4.
