1 Konami / Stern Multigame Kit Konami/Stern Multigame installation instructions Version 2-2 Thanks for buying the Stern/Konami Multigame kit. It lets you play up to 31 games (when they re all programmed) on a standard Super Cobra (or modified Scramble) PCB. It replaces the programme and sound ROMs on the 2 boards, so power consumption is around the same as a standard Super Cobra board. Note: you must install into a working board, the multigame kit doesn t replace much of the original game hardware so needs it all to be working. I hope to have these available soon. Other games are currently being adapted to the multigame, and will be made available free of charge (you will need to programme your game EEPROM and possibly the sound/graphics ROMs and colour PROM) Multigame Feature list Runs original game code, modified only for the different memory map of Super Cobra, and to add extra features Freeplay in all games Full attract mode in freeplay setting (doesn t sit there burning an image into the screen) Multi-position high score table Initials entry in high score table DIP switch settings selected in software from the menu DIP switches and high scores saved in non-volatile RAM (so they remain even when the games are powered-down) Option to reset DIP switches and high score table to default values from the menu (see below) When in a game, hold P1 & P2 buttons to return to the menu (after a selectable predetermined time), this function can be disabled Auto-boot on power-up to any game Prevent access to config menu Memory test on startup Supports Ultimarc servo sticks to automatically switch between 4-and 8-way joystick (contact me for further details) Full support available from the developer New features being added in each software update

3 Installing into the Super Cobra game board Main board identification The photo below shows the main (lower) game board, and identifies the various IC s you need to change. Red Graphics ROMs Yellow Colour PROM Blue Z80A CPU Green Original game ROMs (remove if you want to, it ll save power if you do)

4 Sound board identification The photo below shows the sound (upper) game board, and identifies the various IC s you need to be aware of. Blue Z80A CPU Green Original sound ROMs (remove if you want to)

5 Main board You need to remove the main game Z80 from the lower game board (it s usually socketed if it s soldered in then you need to desolder it and install a 40 pin socket, included in the kit). Plug the Z80 into the main board and plug the board into the space freed up by the Z80 on the game board. Note polarity - the Z80 plugs in the same direction as it was in the game board. It s also worthwhile at this point to remove the game EPROMs as all they will be doing is consuming power and serve no purpose once the multigame is installed, and may get in the way of the main board.

6 Graphics board Remove the 2 graphics EPROMs at positions 5F and 5H on the lower board (these sockets are often in quite a mess and may need to be replaced) Then install the graphics board into the 2 sockets (note polarity)

7 Colour board The colour PROM is usually soldered into the board at location 6E. This will need to be desoldered and replaced with a 16 pin socket (included in the kit). You can then install the colour board into the socket where the colour PROM used to be. Then connect the ribbon cables from the main board to the graphics and colour boards

8 Sound board You need to remove the sound Z80 from the upper game board (it s usually socketed I ve never seen one soldered in place) Plug the Z80 into the multigame sound board and plug the board into the space freed up by the Z80 on the game board. Note polarity - the Z80 plugs in the same direction as it was in the game board. You can also remove the sound EPROMs as all they will be doing is consuming power and serve no purpose once the multigame is installed.

9 And connect the ribbon cable from the main board to the sound board

10 Putting back together and powering up Now put the game boards back together you may need to use elongated standoffs (4 are included in the kit), and depending on the height of the original game sockets, snip off the top part of the ribbon cable connectors. Ensure everything is connected the right way round and replace in your cab. Note that in upright cabs, Super Cobra and Scramble boards have P1 & P2 controls connected together. If installing in an original cab then this won t be a problem. If using a JAMMA adaptor and you only have 1 set of controls, ensure you wire P1 & P2 controls together on the adaptor. When you power the game back up, it should boot into a quick memory test, then a menu appear. If it doesn t, immediately power it down and check all boards are correctly fitted and all cables are properly seated. MAIN MENU Use up and down to select position, then press either Fire to go to the game, or Bomb to enter configuration (either individual game or global settings)

11 INDIVIDUAL GAME CONFIGURATION MENU Entering the settings for an individual game, you can change the various options. Most games allow number of lives, coin settings and cabinet type, Super Cobra also has a continue function that can be enabled or disabled. You can also reset the high scores to default by holding down the Left and Bomb controls, then press Fire. To return to the main menu, press Fire when you re at the Exit selection.

12 GLOBAL SETTINGS CONFIGURATION MENU Entering the global settings, you can change various global options, including resetting all DIPs or all high scores (for all games) to default. Hold down the Left and Bomb controls, then press Fire to reset any defaults. You can also change the length of time you need to hold down the P1 & P2 buttons to return from playing any game back to the menu. To return to the main menu, press Fire when you re at the Exit selection. You can choose which game to boot to on power-up, default is to have it boot to the main menu. Hold left on power-up to set this back to the main menu. You can allow or disallow pressing P1&P2 start buttons to return to the main menu (so you re locked into a game). You can allow or disallow access to the configuration menu (e.g. if you want to prevent people making changes to your settings. Full access to select games is still allowed (unless you ve disabled the P1&P2 return to menu option above). Hold right on power-up to set this back to allowed. Game differences Because some of the games used additional hardware for extra features, there are some differences to the look of some of the games. This doesn t detract from gameplay, which is pretty much identical:- The End bullets are dots instead of lines Frogger background can be selected to be either black or blue (instead of the original hardware blue/black split screen) Rescue Background is blue or black, and not the graduated colours as on the original board Minefield Background is blue or black, and not the graduated colours as on the original board The additional features added to the games change the game timing very slightly (to the player you won t be able to tell any difference at all) but it does mean that you won t be able to use the multigame to submit any official high scores.
