2 Royal Canadian Mint Colour Technology Test Tokens In 2015, the Royal Canadian Mint attended a currency conference, in Vancouver, which included attendees of other world-wide mints and banks. This conference was for delegates of central banks to see and share innovative coin and polymer note ideas and technologies. All the major suppliers such as various mints and currency manufacturers were on hand to gain contracts from the various government buyers on-hand. It appears that three different test tokens were produced by the Royal Canadian Mint for this conference. Two were size of a twenty-five cent coin and one was the size of a fifty cent coin. Here are the specifications of the tokens (unofficial): Canada Flag token, Poppy token, ABCDEFG 1234 Multiple nickel plated steel, magnetic. Diameter: 24 mm Thickness: 2.0 mm Edge: reeded Weight: approximately 6 grams Die axis: Fish token, ABCDEFG 1234 Multiple nickel plated steel, magnetic. Diameter: 27 mm Thickness: 1.9 mm Edge: reeded Weight: approximately 7 grams Die axis: As of now, only one of the poppy coins has been documented by a collector who was able to obtain a complete set of tokens from the conference. The only other tokens, one example of each of the twentyfive cent size, with the enamelled flag and the fifty cent size, with the enamelled angel fish, have been documented, certified and offered here. The twenty-five cent test token, with the enamelled flag, is eerily similar to the enamelled twenty-five cent flag coin released for circulation, other than the colour, mountains and text. The fifty cent size test token with the angel fish is simply stunning. This is a rare opportunity to obtain a here-to-fore undocumented and unavailable pair of official Royal Canadian test tokens.

PCGS MS66, perfectly preserved with stunning toning. Simply The Finest Known Mint State Example and thus a once in a lifetime opportunity to acquire the best of the best. As the Charlton Catalogue explains: This popular and very scarce coin was originally minted in considerable quantity. During the early and mid-1920s the demand for 50-cent pieces was very light; only 28,000 pieces were issued between 1921 and These are assumed to have been almost entirely 1920s. When a greater demand for this denomination arose later in 1929, the Master of the Ottawa Mint decided to melt the entire stock of 1920 and 1921 coins (amounting to some 480,392 pieces) and recoin the silver into 1929 coins. He took this decision because he feared that the public would suspect they were receiving counterfeits if a large quantity of coins with old dates were issued. It is believed that the 75 or so 1921 s that have survived came from Specimen sets sold to collectors, or from circulation strikes sold to Mint visitors. This example is from the Canadiana Collection. $325,000-$375,000 GB 18

Mr. Ingram indicated only denominations of 10, 50, and 100 were found with no specimens for the 5 and 25. The tokens are somewhat similar to the 1946 Eastern Arctic issue [Gingras 285, a, b, c and d] but differ in size and weight. Everything, including its likely date of production about 1840, and the identical features with the unique DMC / P.E.I piece, point to Dennis McCarthy of Charlottetown as the issuer. McCarthy s Charlottetown tinsmith shop was located at the north-west corner of Kent and Great George Streets (the latter street now called University Avenue). Ford Collection, August 2013, lot Fine for issue. $1,500-$2, Br North West Company token. CH FT-10B. In copper Holed as usual. PCGS VF, with an indication that the surfaces have been tooled somewhat. As to be expected, there is some porosity, especially on the obverse. However, this is a very desirable example of a token that is much rarer in copper than in brass. It is noteworthy that the hole on the North West token is always applied from the reverse and always in exactly the same spot, through the top right half of the letter H and part of the border, and is always the same size. This precision suggests that the tokens were machine holed before they were distributed. The specimen in the Stack s Bowers 2013 sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. collection, lot 21027, was graded choice VF and brought a hammer price of $18,000. The EF-AU example in our sale of the George Thomson collection in May 2014 realized $26,000 hammer. 42 John Regitko & Geoffrey Bell team up for Charity In John s words: Ever since awards have been handed out, the recipients have wondered what will happen to their award medals and plaques that they worked so hard for. Chances are that they volunteered their talents and hundreds of hours of time to earn them. The conversations I have had with other collectors who have also been awarded presentation medals of how to dispose of them while they are still alive are of like mind. Without fail, they are all in agreement that awards medals with their name on them should not be sold while they are alive. They also agree that family members have no idea what to do with them when they pass on. I might explain to my wife which ones are gold and which ones are only gold plated, or suggest that she contacts a collector that we have befriended over the years. But I am not convinced that they will wind up in the hands of someone that will appreciate them other than for any financial benefit they might obtain from their resale. The 24 or so personalized medals at this stage in my life do not mean as much to me as the great memories I have of my long involvement that earned them. As well, my wife has no attachment to my medals, nor the 13 she herself received, who also has fond memories of her involvement with the CNA/RCNA, ONA and local coin clubs. Let s be realistic, donating them to the RCNA archives would mean they will just sit in someone else s basement rather than mine. Hopefully, I have come up with a solution without being criticized for my decision. Half of the proceeds will be donated to the registered non-profit organizations that supports numismatics in Canada. That includes the Canadian Association for Numismatic Education (CAFNE) which supports the RCNA s educational programs, and the J. Douglas Ferguson Historical Research Foundation, who supports the publication of collector s numismatic research. The other half of the proceeds will be donated to non-profit organizations that my family has had a need of in the past, such as SickKids Hospital, Heart and Stroke Foundation, St. Michael s Hospital, Canadian Blood Services and the church. These donations can be verified by the executive secretary of the RCNA at year-end. I hope this will encourage others to consider doing something worthwhile that will benefit the hobby, both before and after their departure. In a showing of goodwill on the auctioneer s part, Geoffrey Bell has committed all commissions from the sale of these award medals to the J. Douglas Ferguson Historical Research Foundation. Geoff is a member of the board as well as a past chairman.

We have several high quality lots awarded to E.A. Gilroy (President-Manitoba A.H.A.) were Canada beat the USA in overtime to claim gold. Formed in 1930, the Winnipegs were largely sponsored by the local grain trade and won the Allen cup in 1931 and thus were selected to represent Canada. Also included are medals from the next Olympics in 1936 Germany. Auction Sale #19
