Chances are, if you re a Global Resource Hunter member, you already understand the need to own gold and silver in these turbulent economic times. We need not make the case for physical precious metals; the question is not so much whether to invest, but how to invest. There are myriad forms of gold and silver, including newly-minted coins, bars and rounds. Investors have many excellent options available to them. However, there is one way of owning gold and silver that provides not just one, but two ways to profit. Rare U.S. coins not only benefit from rising spot prices, but they are also poised to appreciate in collector value. For readily-available bullion products like Eagles and Maples, the market value is a direct function of spot price. Except in highly unusual and short-lived situations, the premium (i.e., the difference between melt value and market value) remains relatively constant. The value of these products is completely tethered to the underlying metal value. By contrast, rare coins have the potential -- and a proven track record -- of amplifying increases in spot prices. The key difference between bullion coins and rare coins is supply. Take American Silver Eagles as an example. Almost always, the supply of Silver Eagles is sufficient to cover market demand. The U.S. Mint releases tens of millions of pieces annually. In addition to the enormous quantity of coins already in the marketplace, the U.S. Mint is striking more every day. It is the same story for products like bars and rounds. When investors want more of these items, mints and refineries go into overdrive to satisfy orders. By contrast, there is a finite and relatively inelastic supply of rare U.S. coins. When conditions are quiet and there s slack in marketplace inventories, they can be picked up at very reasonable levels. With that being said, when there is a surge in demand, supplies are usually insufficient. This often leads to massive upswings in value. Vintage American coins have seen this phenomenon over and over again. And as time goes on, many of these coins should only appreciate in value. What Causes These Boom Cycles? The answer is twofold. When gold and silver rally, so do investment-grade U.S. coins. Bull markets bring in new buyers, many of whom are anxious to own a basket of gold and silver products.
In addition to traditional bullion coins like Eagles, Maples and Krugerrands, investors want to diversify into coins like $20 Double Eagles. The bullion coins usually stay at low premiums during these bull markets, but the rare coins truly take off. An order for 1,000 Gold Eagles can be filled with one phone call, but an order for 1,000 $20 Double Eagles might wipe out the entire market s supply at any given point. We ve seen the pattern countless times -- especially during gold s run from A $200 jump in the price of gold would result in a $400 spike in the value of $20 Double Eagles. When silver rallied from $30 per ounce to nearly $50 per ounce, high-grade Silver Dollars tacked on $50-$100 per coin in value. Rare coins gave investors massive outsized returns. If you wanted to maximize your profits on the gold and silver boom of 2008-'11, your best path to take was owning rare coins. Bullion coins rose in value dollar-for-dollar with spot prices, but rare coins generated a much greater overall return. Rare coins benefit tremendously from rising metals prices, but that s not the only source of price appreciation. Collector demand can have an equally powerful effect on market values. Rare coins aren t just round pieces of metal; they re historical artifacts with a wide, passionate collector audience. When certain coins become in vogue among collectors, supplies can dry up quickly. This will often happen when a new reference book is released, a major retailer starts promoting a certain coin, or a series gains publicity. Regardless of what drives new collectors to a specific coin, the net result is a significant increase in demand -- and value. Collectors tastes are fluid and cyclical. Coin categories can go dormant for a while, only to return to the spotlight soon thereafter. Over the decades, we ve seen many coins go from being totally overlooked, to white-hot in a short period of time. A sleepy corner of the market will suddenly attract new attention and undergo huge price movements. If anything, price increases can sometimes (and often do) feed on themselves. When a large number of collectors start buying in the same area, they can become extremely competitive. Remember, collecting is a passionate and emotional pursuit -- this is what can lead to massive leaps in value. So, why are we focusing on rare coins in this report today? We re witnessing a virtually unprecedented set of circumstances in the vintage coin space. As mentioned earlier, demand for certain types of coins can ebb and flow with collector tastes and market preferences.
However, for the first time in our decades of observation, five of the most popular American coins are available at severely discounted levels. These are like the blue chips of numismatics. They enjoy the widest collector audience, are regarded as being among the most beautiful American coins, and all have fascinating historical appeal. Yet, right now, they re available at extremely attractive price points. Here s what makes these coins the top four to own -- and why they re perennial favorites among collectors worldwide: 1. The $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle If you ve ever seen an American Gold Eagle, you re already familiar with the Saint- Gaudens Double Eagle s iconic motif. This celebrated design, conceived by famed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, is widely considered the most beautiful to appear on an American gold coin. The history of the $20 Saint begins with President Theodore Roosevelt, who wanted to overhaul the appearance of America s gold coinage. Up until this point, U.S. coins were designed by Philadelphia Mint staff engravers. Their main priority was creating safe motifs that were easy to mass-produce year after year. Roosevelt, meanwhile, commissioned an outside artist to create a daring, innovative and stunning design. Saint-Gaudens had ambitious plans for the $20 Double Eagle coin, but he put form way ahead of function. His initial design proved virtually impossible to strike, but eventually the coin was modified for mass-production. It underwent numerous adjustments and modifications in its first two years, but eventually the U.S. Mint settled on a final design. The coin was struck from 1907 until 1933, when a different Roosevelt (FDR, in this case), ordered an end to all circulating American gold coinage. His executive order of 1933 forbade private gold ownership. Americans were forced to redeem their gold coins for paper money -- and in the process, countless $20 Double Eagles were destroyed.
Vintage Value #1: $20 Saint-Gauden Double Eagle Today, $20 Saints are popular both as collectibles and investment pieces. These big, beautiful coins contain nearly a full ounce of gold and are truly impressive to hold in person. They enjoy a dedicated following both from the numismatic and investment communities. However, in today s market, $20 Saints are trading at historically low prices. $20 Saints typically command a significant premium over the spot price of gold. Highgrade Uncirculated coins routinely trade for $800-$900 per coin over their melt value. Today, those same coins are buyable for just $300 over spot! If you re going to own $20 Saints, the grade to buy is MS64. Only a small percentage of coins qualify for this grade level. In order for a coin to qualify as MS64, it must display strong luster, clean surfaces, zero signs of wear and excellent eye appeal. The MS designation stands for Mint State, meaning the coin is Uncirculated and essentially like new. Right now, MS64 pieces are trading for a tiny premium over coins graded in the XF40-AU55 range. Why buy a worn, circulated coin when you get can an MS64 for just $100 more? We also like MS64s because MS65s carry a big price tag. With a $400-$500 price difference between MS64s and MS65s, we feel MS64s have ample room to appreciate and rise in premium.
2. The $20 Liberty Double Eagle When the U.S. Mint first started issuing gold coins in 1795, the largest denomination was the $10 Eagle. This represented a massive amount of money at the time, and ordinary citizens would almost never use such a large sum. Most $10 gold pieces were held by larger companies and institutions; rarely would such a large coin be tendered in everyday commerce. That would be like Americans carrying $500 paper bills today. This all changed with the 1848 discovery of gold in California. Suddenly a massive amount of yellow metal found its way into the marketplace. In San Francisco, a large number of private mints and refineries started issuing their own gold coins and ingots, but they were not trusted like official U.S. coins. Merchants had extreme difficulty using privately-issued gold in international trade. In response, the U.S. government created a new large-size gold coin: the $20 Liberty Double Eagle. Vintage Value #2: $20 Liberty Double Eagle The first $20 Lib came off the dies in 1849 and it was produced continuously until During its lengthy lifespan, it became one of the world s most universally recognized forms of money.
It may have been struck in the U.S., but the coin was readily accepted throughout the world. Massive quantities of $20 Liberty Double Eagles found their way to Asia, South America and Europe. In fact, to this day, these coins are still surfacing from time to time in overseas bank vaults. Nowadays, $20 Liberties are usually seen with extensive wear and signs of circulation. They become more difficult to find in Mint State grades, especially above MS61 to MS62. These big gold coins were stored in canvas bags; as such they tended to jostle around come in contact with each other. Therefore, most $20 Liberties exhibit significant nicks, scratches and gouges. This is why we like the $20 Liberty Double Eagle in MS64. Very, very few pieces have been graded this high; the number is probably smaller than most collectors realize. It s also worth noting that MS65s are very difficult to find and trade for $3,000-$4,000 per coin (when available). When MS64 $20 Liberties get hot, the supply is always woefully inadequate. In 2009, as gold surged above $1,000 per ounce, we remember $20 Liberties staged a wild rally. As spot jumped by $200 per ounce, these coins spiked by $750-$1,000 per coin! They peaked in 2009 at $4,000 per coin in MS64. Today, those same coins are not buyable for well under $2,000 each. The spot price of gold is higher today than it was in 2009, yet MS64 $20 Liberties can be acquired for half the price! At such a significant discount, we like the idea of owning the MS64 $20 Liberty Double Eagle at today s market levels. 3. The $10 Indian Eagle Augustus Saint-Gaudens is most famously associated with the $20 Liberty bearing his name, but he actually designed the $10 Eagle too. In fact, this motif was his strong preference for the $20 Double Eagle, but Theodore Roosevelt opted to use it for the $10 Eagle. In fact, there is a unique prototype Double Eagle featuring this Indian head design. The coin last traded hands in the early 1980s for nearly half a million dollars; it s likely an eight-figure item today! Much like the $20 Saint, the $10 Indian was tweaked quite a bit when it first came out. Saint-Gaudens was mostly worried about how the coin looked aesthetically, but the U.S. Mint found the coin difficult to strike in quantity. A total of four different versions were tested until the Mint settled on a final rendition. Unlike the $20 Saint, which had to be significantly modified for mass-production, the final $10 Indian looks quite similar to Saint-Gaudens original format.
$10 Indians were issued from 1907 through 1916, but were put on temporary hiatus during World War I. They were produced intermittently in the 1920s and early 1930s, but were discontinued entirely in A small number of 1933 $10 Indians were released before FDR issued his executive order; one specimen recently fetched over $750,000 at auction! Vintage Value #3: $10 Indian Eagle Today, the most frequently-seen dates in the $10 Indian series are 1926 and Large quantities were issued those years in response to international demand. Many European banks chose to be paid in $10 Indians when they redeemed U.S. Treasury notes. In fact, if you encounter a high-grade $10 Indian today, there an excellent chance the coin spent some time overseas before returning to the U.S. The average $10 Indian is seen in Extremely Fine, or About Uncirculated condition (i.e. XF40-AU58 on the 1-70 grading scale). Uncirculated coins tend to be baggy with significant abrasions and contact marks. We feel the best value grade for this coin is MS64, as they are scarce without carrying a massive premium. When MS64 $10 Indians are in demand, market supplies get depleted quickly. This happened numerous times over the past years, but most memorably in late 2005 and The $10 Indian skyrocketed from $1,600 to $3,300 per coin in just six months! After one large firm recommended the MS64 $10 Indian to its clients, the coin was off to the races. While not as dramatic, we ve seen similar instances more recently. MS64 $10 Indians zoomed upward from $2,000 to $2,800 per coin in just 90 days in late
2007. In mid-2011, the coin advanced virtually overnight from $1,800 to nearly $2,600 per coin. Simply put, when MS64 $10 Indians get hot, there are never enough coins out there to cover orders. In today s market, this coin is buyable at the lowest price we ve seen in well over a decade. MS64 $10 Indians are currently available in the low teens! Even when gold spot was in the $500-$600 per ounce range in 2005, this coin was a $1,600-$1,900 item. We should also mention that MS65 $10 Indians are $3,000- $4,000 coins, so MS64s have plenty of room to grow in value. 4. The Morgan Silver Dollar Of all U.S. coins, perhaps the most widely collected is the Morgan Silver Dollar. This is America s most famous, widely recognized and beloved silver coin. It s easy to see why the Morgan Dollar has such universal appeal. These coins are as historic as they are beautiful. They were issued in response to Nevada mining interests, who pressured the U.S. government into buying massive amounts of silver. Despite Americans preference to use smaller and more-convenient silver coins, the federal government belted out millions of Morgan Dollars at five different mint facilities. The Morgan Silver Dollar was produced from 1878 until 1921, but large caches of the coins remained in bank and government vaults until the 1960s and 1970s. In fact, these hoards were brilliantly marketed to the general public -- which created an incredible number of new collectors. As a testament to the Morgan Dollar s mass appeal, literally millions of these coins were absorbed by the collecting public. Today, it s rare to find even an original bag of 1,000 Morgans. Even solid-date, 20-coin Uncirculated rolls are difficult to locate in any kind of quantity. Morgan Dollars were distributed in giant canvas bags containing 1,000 pieces. Like $20 Double Eagles, Silver Dollars often became heavily marked and scratched from storage in these bags. The coins would come in contact with another, leaving extensive nicks and abrasions. Therefore, even before the coins made it to general circulation, they acquired extensive marks and nicks. Today s collectors basically have two choices: own Morgan Dollars in well-worn condition, or heavily marked-up Uncirculated. However, a limited number of coins survived in MS65 condition. By a limited number, we mean a tiny, single-digit percentage. In order for a Morgan Dollar to achieve the MS65 grade, it must display full brilliant luster, an excellent strike, strong eye appeal, and clean surfaces. Precious few coins meet this qualification, and it s easy to see why.
The Morgan s design, while beautiful, is extremely prone to damage. These heavy coins leave significant marks when they land on each other. Furthermore, the cheek on Liberty s face is raised and especially vulnerable to damage. Vintage Value #4: Morgan Silver Dollar When MS65 Morgans are in demand, price swings can be massive. This was especially evident in 2011, when the spot price of silver screamed upward to nearly $50 per ounce. Vintage Silver Dollars were in extreme short supply and the MS65 price jumped by $100 in just a matter of months. MS65 Morgans went from $160 to $260 per coin from January 2011 to May This was not the first time MS65 Morgans made a dramatic move. In May 2006, the coin staged a sudden rally from $160 to $230 per coin in just 120 days. What s the common thread between these situations? Morgan Dollars amplified a run in the price of silver. As the spot price of silver advanced, Morgan Dollars spiked in value by an even greater percentage.
Nowadays, MS65 Morgans are buyable at the bargain level of $160 per coin or so again. If history is any indicator, another run in the price of silver will push the MS65 Morgan upward by $100 or more. But that s not the only trigger that could benefit the Morgan Silver Dollar. An excellent case could be made that these coins should be worth $300-$400 each as pure collectibles. Given their beauty, tremendous appeal and alluring history, this coin would not seem overpriced at triple its current market level. Conclusion To summarize, rare vintage U.S. coins offer gold and silver buyers additional upside. Classic American coins can not only intensify your investment returns, but they also stand to appreciate independently of spot prices. A rally in precious metals prices will send these coins upward, but so could a wave of new collectors and enthusiasts. These coins offer you two ways to win. We are currently witnessing a rare opportunity where five of America s favorite numismatic coins are available at bargain levels. The $20 Saint, $20 Liberty, $10 Indian and Morgan Dollar are perennially treasured coins, but today they re trading at heavy discounts. This situation is highly unusual; we strongly urge you take advantage of these superb values.
