It is with deepest Sympathies that Yankee Territory Coinshooters announce the passing of Long-time member (since 1996) Don Bogli. Don passed away Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016 He has not been around the club for a few years, being cared for in a nursing home. Older members will remember his alwayspleasant attitude, especially when talking about detecting. He thought a lot of our club. I am very grateful for the time I spent with him, in a visit last summer - we talked a long time, mostly about good memories with the hobby and the club. He was so pleased with the newest YTC logo hat I'd brought for him. I always liked Don, and I will miss him. Donations may be made to: American Parkinson's Disease Association Inc., P.O. Box 718, Old Mystic, CT YTC will be making a donation. Dave G - 2 -
YTC February Meeting Program The next meeting of our club will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 8 in the B-1 ballroom, starting at 6:30 P.M. We need you to be a part of the program. This is our usual topic for this meeting Best Finds of the Previous Year (2016). Please bring in a display of one or more items you detected up - simple or otherwise - showing us some finds from 2016 that you are proud of or that tickled your fancy in some way. Give us a few words related to your display...feel free to tell us exactly where you found them (I promise not to take notes). (-: For your support of this meeting, each participant will be awarded a silver dime. Thanks. Dave G. YTC Holiday Party 2016 The night was frigid and blustery, but inside was the warmth of camaraderie and festivity. Close to 60 members and guests joined in an evening of fun and fulfillment, with the emphasis on fill the food was abundant and varied, so much so that it was likely impossible to sample everything (though I think a few tried!). When it came time for the gift exchange, Rick Browne once again did a great job keeping things light and moving. (Thanks, Rick we also wish you were closer than the Cape.) There were 45 surprises on the gift table, and as usual a few popular items changed hands several times [notably silver rounds, including 2 beautiful Buffalo nickel replicas in pure silver (one ounce).] Most attempts at hiding a cherished item failed a couple members prowled through the crowded tables, sniffing for silver, like a hound on the scent of a rabbit. If there were tears of loss, they were pretty well hidden, except for a quivering lower lip or two. The evening ended far too soon clean-up proceeded, and as is our custom, the custodian was given a Christmas thank you for picking up after us throughout the year. Good-byes and best wishes for the Holidays were shared, and back into the cold night we went now carrying a certain warmth within us. Thanks to all who came, especially those preparing and bringing food. Plus the unseen volunteers who bring the meat platter, condiments, drinks, and utensils. Happy New Year to all. Dave G. Thank You to Photographer Bob Brock for Providing these great pictures of YTC Members enjoying the 2016 Holiday Party

January Thank You to all the YTC Members who brought delicious food, desserts, munchies and the Holiday Spirit, also to the YTC who provided condiments, beverages and the splendid meat and cheese platter!!! -5-
Just Braggin? By Dave Gregorski I ve always had a great fondness for silver coming out of the ground, and that s usually in the form of silver coins. First using a cheapie machine, I may have gotten one or two in my first year of detecting. Then Minelab machines (I m on my third generation) became a part of my life, and when I got to know them, well, plus investing in larger double D coils, pulling silver from depths up to 8+ inches became fairly commonplace. Back then, quite a lot of silver had been left behind because of soil mineralization, overlapping junk targets, coins on edge and other factors. Detector technology was just beginning to ramp up. In my career, I d say ~96% of my silver coins have come from public land, where there is a lot of detecting competition. The Minelabs gave me several great years (~ ), where my silver coin count was in the 60 s, 70 s and once in the 80 s typically for around 300 hours of detecting. Then for a long time the count dropped off fairly dramatically the newer high-end detectors were more effective in getting the deeper, hard-to-find targets, and I think there were many more people invested in our wonderful hobby, and learning their machines well. So I am very grateful for the year I had in I was headed for a personal record on July 3 rd, I had already gotten 58 silver coins! But my interest waned, in large part because of the extreme dryness of the soil, the summer heat which I don t like, and purchase and use of a great fishing boat. My next silver coin came to me on November 15 th, and I ended the year with 66, in ~130 hours of detecting. Roughly one silver coin every 2 hours, so the detecting faeries were very kind to me. (A side note the Wheatie take was 186 a great ratio of Wheaties to silver coins; over my career, that ratio is around 6.5 to 1 silver coin). It s likely this past year was a silver anomaly, not to be repeated. But there s always hope when you re swingin a coil. And seeing that silver disc against a dark soil backdrop never gets old. A happy and healthy New Year to all. A BIG Thank You to Mary Goldstein, a long time YTC Member, for her generous donation to YTC. THANK YOU MARY!!!!!! - 6 -

Annual Polar Bear Hunt Hunt date is Sunday, March 12 - save it! Rain/snow date is the following Sunday, March 19. Ample details will be forthcoming in the next two Probe issues. Upcoming Club Elections The club elections are coming up in March. It s that time of the year when we put in place the leadership that will help ensure that we remain a functioning club. The club has 5 elected officers, President, Vice-President, Corresponding Secretary, Recording Secretary and Treasurer. A decision is not needed immediately, but it is never too early to start to think about running for one of these offices if you have an interest in helping out. In addition to the elected positions, we are looking to fill a couple of new positions. We are still searching for official titles, but the first position is the YTC Natural Finds Hunt Coordinator. We are looking to have a goal for 2017 of at least 5 natural find hunts. We need an individual to help make that happen. Some of the things that they would be responsible for is taking a lead for a club hunt and running with it, including approaching land owners and getting permission and finding new opportunities for hunt sites and getting permission. The other position we are looking for is a Metal Detecting Club Coordinator. The duties for this individual would be to keep track of other local MD clubs and any hunts that they have upcoming and searching other social media and sources for activities and to then make the information available to the club members - 9 -

Selling Precious Metal Scrap What You Should Know Mike Russo sent our club a detailed explanation re. selling silver and gold as bullion in relation to the spot price. After speaking with Mike to clarify a few things, please see below. [See Mike s ad on page 13] Dave G. The spot price for precious metals is arrived at each weekday at 10:36 A.M. Check out Kitco.com, or several other sites that compute the amount of silver in the typical coins we find metal detecting (they are NOT solid, 100% silver, so their silver content must be calculated). Important: NO ONE ever gets this spot price in selling precious metals. It serves as a benchmark for buying and selling. If you try to sell before this time, the only spot available is from the previous day (sometimes Friday s if it s Monday). Mike Russo (and likely other buyers) will NOT use the old spot you must wait until after the 10:36 spot comes out. FYI - a typical amount sold by a YTC member is less (often much less) than 5 ounces. Special for YTC members, Mike pays 90% of the spot price for precious metal bullion. His profit is less than 10%, because the refineries he sells to must get their cut. [Note Mike sometimes drives to Boston or New York to bring scrap to the refineries.] Legitimate refineries will NOT buy precious metal from someone off the street, like a YTC member. They usually deal in larger quantities and glean 2-4% profit from what they buy. Lately, some refineries are refusing to buy silver scrap even from a licensed dealer, unless it s at least ounces. Please be aware of the above when considering selling precious metal scrap. The ONLY reference Mike will use is that 10:36 A.M. spot for that day. So please save yourselves a headache and do not bring in other paperwork to try to justify a selling price Meeting Dates William J.
