In some cases a reserve may be higher than that, but it will never be higher than the estimate. We have made every effort to make the estimates realistic and conservative. For our mailbid purposes we are defining precious metals as being of silver, gold, platinum or palladium. i
3 BIDDING IN OUR MAILBID SALE We will stop taking bids at 9:00 PM on November 11th or when our phone and/or Fax stops ringing for 10 minutes. Please do not wait until the last minute and get shut out. In every sale a number of bidders could not get through on the last night. We suggest you bid above estimate if you want an item as high bids will be reduced. Our bid sheets offer several bidding options that can save you money, optimize your bids and see that you get the lots that you really want. If you are unsure of how to use these options, please give us a call and we will be more than happy to explain them to you. Please keep in mind that in some cases there may be unpublished reserves set either by the consignor or the cataloger and no bids of less than 60% of estimate are considered. We do not have a call back service, but after placing your bid you may contact us as many times as you like to check on your bids. And we take seriously the commitment to reduce bids. We do not reveal the high bid of any lot, but if you have placed a bid on a lot, you may contact us after your bid has been placed and we will tell you if you are the high bidder. Usually well over 1/3 of all successful bids are reduced and over 75% of successful bidders have at least one of their winning bids reduced. We believe that the best strategy to being a successful bidder is placing your bids early and not waiting until the last minute. We suggest placing your bids early and then, if you want, you may check on your bids near the end of the sale. NO BUYER'S FEE We do not charge a buyer's fees in our sales. You are charged only for the amount of your winning bid, postage and shipping charges. LOT VIEWING SCHEDULE DENVER COIN EXPOSITION. November 5-7. National Western Complex, Expo Hall. I-70 and Brighton Blvd. Exit. The show hours are 10 AM to 6 PM Friday and Saturday and 10 AM to 3 PM on Wednesday. In addition dealer set up day is Thursday afternoon November 4th. We will have most, but not all, lots with us for inspection. We plan to have the majority of the material in the sale in our office from October 18th, except for the show dates mentioned above, until the close of the sale if you need more detailed description of any of the lots. However, please contact us as well in advance of the close of the sale as possible in order that we can provide you with as much information as possible. We will be happy to return your call if we cannot provide you with the information you require when you call, fax or . We will confirm all bids received within 24 hours of receiving the bid. If you do not receive a confirmation please contact us. In the past few months we have been deluged by spam as I m sure many of you have also. Even though our filter separates most of the junk from the real mail, it does not do a perfect job, thus we ask that when sending us a bid or inquiring about the sale, please put Bid or Mailbid Sale in the subject line so we do not delete your along with the junk we receive every day. We do not confirm mail or fax bids unless specifically asked to do so. No information will be available about the results of the sale until all bids have been checked and invoices written. This should take about 4 days. We will not be answering the phone until that information is ready. We hope to be ready by Monday November 15th or Tuesday November 16th. Please note that the closing date for this sale is a holiday in the United States. There is no mail delivery on Veterans Day. If have mailed your bid sheet during the last week of the sale you may want to contact us on the 11th to make sure we have received your bid sheet. ii
4 We ll be happy to try to answer any question you might have about any item in this sale. And please remember to send us your bids so that we receive them by 9 PM November 11th. This sale also will contain an addendum of numerous lots of Numismatic Literature which is being listed on a separate colored flyer being mailed with this list. Time did not permit us to include the listing in the catalog itself. This large listing will contain items from a number of libraries we have purchase as well as items from our own library as well as regular stock items. Please note that this entire catalog is also up on our website at There you will find not only everything in this catalog, but also not only more pictures but the pictures of all the items are in color as well. A great many of the items in this sale, both in the ancient secton and the Jewish Medals section are from the Daniel Friedenberg Collection. Dan Friedenberg is the long time numismatic curator of the Jewish Museum in New York City as well as the author of a trilogy of important books in the field: Jewish Minters and Medalists, Jewish Medals From the Renaissance to the Fall of Napoleon and Great Jewish Portraits in Metal. Many of these items are mentioned in his books, a few are even the actual plate coin. We have tried to mention this important pedigree on each and every ex-friedenberg lot. As usual our sale begins with ancient Jewish and related coins. This section contains items from four different collections as well as items from our own inventory. We have mentioned Friedenberg s coins in the previous paragraph and the other three are impressive in their own right as well. Listing all the highlights would be like writing the catalog over again which is something we have no desire to do. However a few items worth mentioning are a very choice tiny silver Yehud coin, 2 silver Shekels and a silver Half Shekel of the First Revolt and numerous high grade Herodian (including a few of Herod Antipas), Bar Kochba and Holyland City cons. Other ancient coins shouldn t be ignored either. Among the highlights is a long listing of Roman Judaea Capta coins, the famous Fisci Ivdaici Sestertius of Neva, large silver coins of Mazaeus and Mithrapata, choice Greek bronzes and Roman Denari and a very late date Shekel of Tyre. Our world coin section contains over 300 lots. We ll remark on only a few. 3 coins of Puerto Rico including a Peso and a 40 Centavo, numerous slabbed coins including a Cuban gold, a rare East German minor and a Venezuelan pattern, rare coins of the Crusaders and a very long and extensive listing of both coins and tokens from Palestine. Our world paper section is smaller than usual with just over 100 lots. However some of these should be pointed out. Our Israel section has 2 rare Proof notes, a number of Specimens, the extremely rare inverted signature fractional as well as a number of high grade notes seldom offered. Our Palestine listing contains mostly lower grade notes but does offer a nice VF 5 Pound note. In addition a rare Cuban Bond from 1869 is offered. Space does not permit us to list all the highlights in Part Two of the catalog. However we must mention the very rare Tierra del Fuego 5 Gramos, the Jechial Denier (both from the Fridenberg collection), the Cologne Grand Synagogue medal of Jacque Wiener, a Chief Rabbi of Hamburg medal and a rare awarded Yad Vashem medal. Paper items in Part Two include a rare Warsaw Ghetto Work Card, two Dutch Jude ID cards and three local Jewish Community notes from Russia in the post WWI period.
