There are NO buyer's fees in this sale. What you bid is the most you will pay. 2. Bids are reduced to one increment over the second highest bid. Bids for each lot can be entered at any time until that item closes as noted in online description with possible bidding extensions as noted below. There are no hidden reserves; the opening bid is the consignor s reserve. 8. Closing times for each lot are automatically extended for 3 minutes if a bid is received within the last 3 minutes. This continues in 3 minute increments until no further bids are received for that item. If you bid with 4 minutes left the closing will still be in 4 minutes. But if you bid with 2 minutes left the closing will be in 5 minutes. And if you bid with one second left the closing will be in 3 minutes and one second. 9. (75-100) 32-70/452 a R9 Raw MS63 Trace Red Indian Head with 10 inside a ring of 24 stars. Exceedingly rare reverse die, only the second example we have seen offered in fifteen years of any variety. This is the current Fuld plate token for very scarce die 84 with all stars no date. A FINE+ sold for $190 in our October 2002 auction. These dramatic errors are created when a struck token sticks to the die and fails to eject. A subsequent token such as this is then struck with one normal die and an incused image from the previously struck token. If the first token stays stuck each subsequent strike's incused side is less distinct, an exaggerated example is 107/107 that can come quite blurry. This is a nice sharp early strike. ( ) 40-91/432 j R8 NGC AU53 Well struck with nice color Indian Head No Compromise With Traitors struck in German Silver. Just the seventh example we have recorded all AU and better. This piece, usually thought of as a collector strike, did see some light circulation. ( ) 41-92/199 a R3 Raw MS63 10% Red all on reverse. Strike a bit weak as always Indian Head United States Medal. Rarely seen above EF. From the Steve Tanenbaum and Cindy Wibker collections. ( ) 42-93/362 a R2 Raw EF+ Surprisingly well struck for the variety on a seemingly larger and thicker than normal planchet. Date is full but still slightly weak while the reverse is strong Indian Head Not One Cent signed H on the obverse for die sinker Charles D. Horter and signed on the reverse JGW thought to be engraver James Wilson or Horter neighbor and book seller John G. Wells. It is fairly unusual to have the combination of two differently signed dies. Obverse strike is a bit weak as usual with two letters of headband missing Indian Head signed Key Phila with George Washington reverse struck in Brass. ( ) /521 a R9 Raw EF+ Details Well struck for variety with a few light stains. Reverse die cud as usual with some associated weakness in the opposite obverse fields. Indian Head Copper Mine Token struck by A. W. Escherich of Chicago Illinois. Rare variety with rare reverse die though overrated at R9. One of the most detailed examples we have seen offered. A weakly struck EF sold for $550 in our June 2005 sale, while a well struck and likely finest known AU+ brought $1,855 in our July 2012 sale. From the Ed Rogalski collection. ( ) /0 a Unlisted Raw VG Struck on a large 28mm 6.1 gram planchet of another token or coin. There are still a few letters and parts of design visible but not enough for an identification. The edge has fairly heavy widely spaced vertical reeding. George Washington obverse die signed L.R. for die sinker Robert Lovett. Unique and unlisted. Likely some sort of die trial that then spent considerable time in circulation or as a pocket piece. From the Dave Bowers collection earlier from Walt Korzick. ( ) /114A a R8 NGC MS65 BN Pater Patrie George Washington doubleheader struck in Copper. Rare dies, we sold a raw MS64 40% Red and Proof Like for $1,700 in our February 2014 auction. NGC holder labeled as Baker-95A another designation in the Field of Washingtonia. ( ) /114A b R9 Raw UNC Details Trace Bright with some small stains. Pater Patrie George Washington doubleheader struck in Brass. Rare dies, rarer in Brass than Copper. We sold an AU Copper example in our December 2010 auction that realized $475. From the Ed Rogalski collection. ( ) /530 g R7 Raw EF Details Small obverse rim notch. This example still retains 80% or more of its original Copper plating. George Washington Don't Tread On Me reverse die with oddly coiled snake. Struck in Lead with Copper plating as usually seen on pieces above VF. This piece along with some related tokens were delisted in the fifth edition Patriotic book because it occurs only in electrotype plated lead. We did not agree with that decision and feel this is the most legitimate use of die 115. Most 115 tokens and 115A for that matter were made to sell to collectors and were never intended to circulate. This example and 115A/530, were likely made by a different die sinker using the Lovett obverse as a pattern (similar to Higgins of Indiana Primitive fame). They did circulate and both come heavily worn and were represented in the "Found In Wall" contemporary hoard of Civil War tokens dispersed by Steve Tanenbaum a number of years ago. They were all made in Lead and likely all Copper plated to facilitate acceptance and circulation; they could even be thought of as contemporary counterfeits. In fact it has already been decided to include these tokens again in the new sixth edition that is currently being planned. We sold an EF with nearly full plating but small areas of pitting on both sides for $440 in our May 2001 sale. ( ) /420 a R1 Raw AU+ Trace Red mainly on the reverse. Struck with usual obverse die cud, though this one illustrates an interesting transition point as the cud is about to become even larger George Washington Exchange. (50-75)

Very scarce reverse die, particularly this nice. ( ) /256 a R9 Raw EF But weakly struck with some planchet flaws George Washington Horrors of War Blessings of Peace. Rare die combination, just the third we have recorded. From the Ed Rogalski collection. ( ) /0 e Unlisted Raw EF+ 20% Bright on the obverse. The blank reverse is slightly rough as made. George Washington with blank reverse struck in White Metal. Very rare obverse die usually only available on the 121/531 die combination. While listed as Unique R10 in both Brass and Silver, this variety is Unlisted in this composition and likely Unique also. We sold a MS62 example of 121/531 a with indistinct reverse due to multiple strikes in our July 2007 sale that realized $2,200. From the Henry South collection. ( ) /294 a R7 Raw EF+ Abraham Lincoln President 1864 Freedom. Very scarce obverse die many times rarer than the 125's. An AU sold for $410 in our February 2014 sale. From the Ed Rogalski collection. ( ) /417 a R9 Raw UNC Details Reverse clean with many verdigris stains Abraham Lincoln with America reverse in Copper. Very rare variety, the third we have seen offered. We sold a MS62 example of the R8 125/417 j variety for $550 in our July 2009 sale. DeWitt AL From the Ed Rogalski collection. ( ) /177 ao R10 Raw UNC Details But struck on a porous planchet. Struck over Patriotic Civil War token 162/338. Lincoln 1864 First In War First In Peace with George Washington on horseback. Very rare Lincoln die combination in Copper, but Unique over another token. We have records of only three examples of this die combination and composition, all lower grade or with problems. A slightly porous AU brought $451 in our July 2006 auction. Perhaps all could have been struck over 162/338 which itself is notorious for being struck on porous planchet. Possibly this is the only example where the undertype is visible. Regardless an important and interesting token. From the Dave Bowers and Mark Glazer collections. ( ) /252 a R9 NGC MS65 BN Trace Red with some attractive toning. Rare Abraham Lincoln / Masonic die combination struck in Copper. A NGC MS63 BN brought $1, in our December 2008 sale. From the Steve Tanenbaum collection earlier from Harmer Rooke February ( ) /289 b R3 Raw AU 10% Bright. Struck from clashed dies as usual. Lincoln and Union 1864 struck in Brass. ( ) /349 a R9 Raw MS64 Or a bit better with 10% Red and nearly Proof Like surfaces. A very unusual token that appears to have been struck over another token or trial piece with a grouping of five P's visible upright and inverted on the Lincoln side. Rare Lincoln struck in Copper with 1864 date and Flags and Cannons reverse, one of just five examples of this variety we have recorded. An example in MS63 with 40% Red sold for $990 in our July 2009 auction. ( ) /184 a R9 NGC MS64 RB 40% Red. Two very rare and popular dies Lincoln Redeemed and Hunting Dogs struck in Copper. This is the only example in our data base. Ed Rosen who bought the George Fuld collection of Rhode Island was primarily a Store Card collector. When he discovered that a number of the pieces he received had been reclassified as Patriotic tokens he thought he had been taken. Fortunately, Steve Tanenbaum came to the rescue purchasing all the unwanted tokens at a considerable premium over what Ed had paid George. In the following years Ed was able to greatly enhance his Store Card collection from this windfall. From the Steve Tanenbaum, Ed Rosen and George Fuld collections. 5 Civil War Patriotic Tokens /168 a R9 Raw AU Cannon and cannon balls 1863 full brockage mint error. A brockage is created when a struck token adheres to a die and in effect becomes a die itself. The next blank planchet struck receives an incused image of the stuck token. The first few tokens struck in that manner will receive a crisp sharp strike as in this example. When the token creating the brockage remains stuck for a number of strikes its image will become weaker and more spread out with each strike. A MS62 realized $1,500 in our July 2014 auction. Time is Money Exigency 1863 The Flag of Our Union struck in Copper Plated Lead. Rare obverse die that is normally seen in the store card series. Almost certainly a contemporary counterfeit made to circulate during the war. This reeded edge example is much rarer than the plain edge variety, just the second we have seen offered. We sold an EF also with nearly full plating for $275 in our October 1999 sale. From the Ed Rogalski collection. ( ) /432 e R9 Raw UNC Details 40% Bright with small obverse nick. Liberty Cap No Compromise with Traitors struck in White Metal. Exceedingly rare obverse die in the Patriotic series, only known in Silver and White metal both rated R9. This die was deleted in the fifth edition of the Patriotic book as Non-contemporary; this was in error and has again been added to the new sixth edition currently being compiled. This die is thought to be the center portion of John Bolen's Liberty Cap Store Card die One of the Classic Rarities of the entire series. It has been sixteen years since the last example of either composition was offered. From the Henry South, Chris Erlenwein and Larkin Wilson collections, earlier from our October 1999 sale were it realized $3,625. ( ) /380 a R2 NGC MS66 BN 10% Red with very attractive toning and great cartwheel luster. United States of America 1863 with eagle on shield. United States Capital 1863 with Value Me As You Pleas spelling error. Indiana Primitive version of Scovill's 233 die to which Higgins added the word Capital, another spelling error making this a double error; a subject near and dear to our hearts. This type of Koehler reverse is used on many Civil War Sutler tokens. It has been suggested that this was issued for 2nd Regiment Volunteers of Tennessee possibly also known as Robinson's Regiment presumably because they were mustered in at Camp Dick Robinson in Garrard County, Kentucky. We see no reason to believe this is Confederate as has been stated elsewhere. We sold an EF example in our July 2014 sale for $900. Ray Callan's research published in The Civil War Token Journal showed that the Madison, Watertown & Milwaukee Plank Road Company had its office in Milwaukee at the corner of Main and Mason. Although Mr. Hart was from Wauwatosa, the President, Secretary and Treasurer of the company were all Milwaukee businessmen while he was Superintendent. The family business was founded in 1835 by Ziba Bisbee. As an interesting tie in for Civil War token collections, John Stanton began work for Ira Bisbee in 1852 at the age of 23, just one year after he moved to Cincinnati. ( ) J. A. J. ( ) Maine Shell Card Raw AU Plumer's Patent Boot Pat's June 4th, 1861 One Cent patent royalty stamp on a blank card. The outside lettering on this stamp is very difficult to decipher but based on another stamp it reads "Entered according to Act of Congress / in the year 1861 by J. C. Plumer in the / Clerk's office of the District Court / of the District of Massachusetts." The 1867 Eagle reverse is listed in the Bowers book and was used in Delaware, New York and most often Pennsylvania. J. C. Plumer of Portland Maine was issued patent number 32,487 for Improvement in Boots and Shoes on the stated date. The obverse type with a royalty stamp is unlisted and only one example for the entire state of Maine is listed in the new book. Two Cent patent royalty stamps are also known from this issuer but this is the only example we know of used in conjunction with a Shell Card. Very unusual.
