1 Fall 2016 Playwriting I (Theatre ) Alvaro Saar Rios Classroom: Mitchell 375 Office hours: Thursday 9-11; or by appointment My office: THR riosa@uwm.edu OVERVIEW This course is an introduction to playwriting as a way of telling stories. We will focus on the following questions: What are the key elements of playwriting? Why write for the stage? How is playwriting different than writing for television and film? What stories do I want to tell? What are the different theatrical forms through which I could tell my story? Learning objectives By the end of the class, students will be able to: 1) Generate ideas and plans for writing dramatic stories by using poems, personal stories and several other exercises. 2) Edit dramatic dialogue. 3) Provide constructive criticism to fellow students. 4) Compose a synopsis and scenes for a play. We ll achieve these by doing the following: 1) Reading and discussing one full-length play and a few short plays and/or scenes. 2) Identifying and practicing various forms of playwriting. 3) Workshopping peers work. They are just good resources for aspiring writers.**
2 POLICIES 1) This is a workshop class that depends on your participation. Absences can and will dramatically affect your grade. You are allowed one free absence. Every absence thereafter is 5 points off your participation grade. Four absences will result in a failing grade. 2) Work is due when it is due. No late assignments are accepted. No assignments can be made up. Everything must be TYPED and in play format unless otherwise specified. 3) Read all required plays and D2L handouts before you come to class on the days on which they re assigned. I ll expect you to contribute to the day s discussion, and your contributions count toward your class participation grade. 4) All writing assignments are due in hardcopy. You will be responsible for bringing in enough copies of your work for your classmates. If you are going to be absent on the day a writing assignment is due, please it to the instructor by no later than 2pm on the day it is due. 5) Extra Credit assignments can be arranged for 5 points. A maximum of 10 points of extra credit will be allowed. This must be arranged/approved by me before the last two weeks of class. PLEASE check with me if you re unsure of your progress/grade. Possibilities for extra credit include(but are not limited to): -read an extra play of my choice and write a 1-page response paper. -attend a professional play or reading and write a 1-page response paper 6) Most writing assignments will be presented in class. If you do not present on the assigned workshop day, you will receive an F for that specific writing assignment. 7) Except for Writing Assignment #2, you are responsible for submitting your scenes in Play Format. GRADES Writing Assignments # % (5% each assignment) Final Portfolio 25% Participation 25% (in class writing assignments, discussions, etc..) FINAL PORTFOLIO Your final portfolio will consist of: Scenes for a one-act play pages. (25%)

Where does one start? characters, monologues, elements of bad plays Read Ballad of Mulan" Handout. Bring it to next class. Writing Assignment #1. Write a 2-3 sentence synopsis of the Ballad of Mulan handout. Also write a short paragraph about a living person who could be considered a modern Mulan and why. Must be typed. Read D2L Handout 36 Assumptions about Writing Plays by Jose Rivera. After reading handout, select three assumptions you connect with. Be prepared to discuss for next class. Sept. 15 Writing Assignment #1. 36 Assumptions about Writing Plays, Discuss Writing Assignment #1, Ballad of Mulan handout, Facts of the world, Group work Turning a Fact of the World into a scene, Scene from Let The Right One In HW for next week: Writing Assignment #2. Write a 2-3 pages scene based on a Ballad of Mulan fact of the world. Typed. Two copies Sept. 22 Writing Assignment #2 (2 copies) Playwriting format, Read & discuss Writing Assignment #2 HW for next week: Read assigned folktale Writing Assignment #3. Write a short synopsis and 5-10 Facts of the World for your folktale. Must be typed. Sept. 29 Writing Assignment #3. Discuss assigned folktales and Writing Assignment #3 Group work Turning a Fact of the World into a scene HW for next week: Writing Assignment #4: Write a 2-3 page scene based on a folktale fact of the world. Typed. Two copies. Bring food to share.
