1 I Am a Writer Week 2 - Atmosphere, Setting and Senses SST: purpose, audience, orientation, atmosphere, setting, sensory writing Learning intention: To Know: what sensory writing is and how to create atmosphere in my orientation paragraph. To understand: how creating atmosphere and using the five senses will make my writing more engaging for my reader. Look up the definitions for this week s SST and write your own definition for each in your workbook. Descriptive Writing and the five senses (Please read the following information and make summary notes in your workbook) One of the key tasks that a passage of descriptive writing has to perform is to appeal to all five of the senses. The "picture" that your story paints in a reader's mind should be so much more than a visual one - it should also be about how things sound, smell, taste, and touch. Only then will your writing truly come to life.

2 Far too many writers limit themselves to the purely visual in their writing. But great description engages all of the senses. Take a look at this list of things you might use to describe a character... His spiky brown hair The scar on his chin that only showed up in a certain light His chewed fingernails His ripped jeans There is nothing wrong with these things, except that they engage only the sense of sight. Descriptive writing that is onedimensional like that can be tedious. Here are some other things you could say about the character... He wears too much aftershave (smell) His lips taste sweet like ripe fruit (taste) He has a high-pitched laugh (sound) His hair feels wiry (touch) Exactly the same thing applies to describing a story's setting. These descriptions of a beach all appeal to the sense of sight... The white sand. The tiny pink shells. The way the sea is the same blue as the sky, making it hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. The rocks still wet from high tide. But these apply to all of the other senses... The smell of caught fish from the fishing boat (smell). The faint taste of salt on the breeze (taste). The screeching herring gulls (sound). The slippery rocks (touch). Evoking all of the senses in a passage of descriptive writing is a simple way of making the description multi-dimensional. And you know what? It really doesn't take a lot of extra work.

Please read the graphic organiser below and create your own organiser in your workbook. Write a sub-heading for each of the senses and write your own examples for each. Setting (Please read the following information and make summary notes in your workbook) Setting moves readers most when it contributes to an organic whole. So close your eyes and picture your characters within desert, jungle, or suburb whichever setting shaped them. Imagining this helps balance location and characterization. Right from the start, view your characters inhabiting a distinct place. Laurel Yourke

4 Setting includes the time, location, and atmosphere where the plot takes place. Remember to always combine setting with characterisation and plot. Include enough detail to let your readers picture the scene but only details that actually add something to the story. (For example, do not describe Lucy locking the front door, walking across the yard, opening the garage door, putting air in her bicycle tires, getting on her bicycle none of these details matter except that she rode out of the driveway without looking down the street.) Use the five senses in your descriptions of setting. Rather than feed your readers information about the weather, population statistics, or how far it is to the grocery store, show these things to your reader so they can experience the location the way your characters do. Example: Our sojourn in the desert was an educational contrast with its parched heat, dust storms, and cloudless blue sky filled with the blinding hot sun. The rare thunderstorm was a cause for celebration as the dry cement tunnels of the aqueducts filled rapidly with rushing water. Great rivers of sand flowed around and through the metropolitan inroads of man s progress in the greater Phoenix area, forcefully moved aside for concrete and steel structures. Palm trees hovered over our heads and saguaro cactuses saluted us with their thorny arms.

5 Atmosphere (Please read the following information and make summary notes in your workbook) Setting: Atmosphere: Where the story happens. This includes the location, historical time period, and social circumstances of the short story. The setting is usually explained through description but it could also be revealed in the dialogue. The emotional feelings that a short story gives a reader. It is the mood of the story. Setting and atmosphere are often essential elements in making the story meaningful. Think about a favourite suspense or horror movie you have seen. Most likely the setting made a real impact on your emotional response to the film. Setting and atmosphere help to shape the emotional aura of a story. Setting fixes the time and place of a story and can play a major role in developing the story s character and conflict. Sometimes setting supports or defines the values and concerns of the characters. The setting may be the actual source of the conflict. It may also be an instrument for revealing character. Often we learn how characters respond to the environment and that gives us insight into their personalities and views on life. Setting is the most common and effective device used for creating atmosphere. There are four main elements that assist in creating a story s atmosphere: 1. Certain words the author uses 2. How the characters speak (dialects, etc.) 3. What details the author gives 4. Figurative language used by the author

Remember to hook in your reader by describing the setting, using the five senses and creating atmosphere. Please compose this on separate paper to hand in to your teacher to receive feedback. Read Lamb to the Slaughter. Annotate this narrative by identifying the: elements of the narrative structure characteristics of a short story language techniques Please paste this into your workbook.

7 Mirror Task Due Week 4 13th May Compose a short story consisting of 800 words using a stimulus provided. Informal Task Due Week 5 20th May Short stories use many different techniques to engage an audience. How does one of the stories studied in the unit prove this statement? Construct a PEETEEEL analysis table where you identify at least three techniques from your chosen story. Complete this on the analysis table handout. Formal Task Due Week 4 13th May and Week 6 26th May Wednesday 13th May come to class prepared to write the first draft for your short story. Tuesday 26th May under exam conditions you will write an evaluation of the short story you have composed. You will also submit your first draft and final copy of your short story. Success criteria: I understand the subject specific terminology and have written definitions for each in my own words. I have read and made summary notes in my workbook for Descriptive Writing and Five Senses, Setting and Atmosphere. I have completed and submitted my mirror task due this week. I have read Lamb to the Slaughter and made necessary annotations. I have noted in my student planner when my tasks are due in Week 4 and Week 6.
