95 Pikes Peak Writers Conference 2017 Synopsis and Blurb Writing for Today's Hybrid Author Pam McCutcheon To begin, assemble the following ingredients: Writing the Fiction Synopsis A Recipe by Pam McCutcheon Your major characters : o Goals o Motivations o Conflicts o Resolution/Growth Your major plot points: A B C D E A. The Ordinary World B. A New Direction C. The Change of Plans D. The Black Moment E. The Resolution and End List of scenes Genre-specific requirements Optional spices: o o o o Tone Setting Time period Theme To prepare your synopsis: Use market research to determine your genre, what synopsis length you ll need, and what publishers/agents you wish to target. Beginning: Combine the goals, motivations, and conflicts of the major characters, their ordinary world (plot point A), and the trigger event that sends them in the new direction (plot point B). Middle: Continue adding the scenes that lead up to the change of plans at the midpoint (plot point C). Show how each scene affects the plot and the characters, including any changes in goal, motivation, conflict, and/or growth. Do the same for the reactions to plot point C until they reach point D. Synopsis and Blurb Writing for Today's Hybrid Author McCutcheon 95 of 121
96 End: Bring the synopsis to closure by describing the dark moment (plot point D) followed by the conclusion (plot point E). Tie up all loose ends of the plot (especially the ending) and include the resolution of the major characters goals and conflicts, as well as any character growth. Add the following spices as desired for flavor: genre considerations, tone, setting, time period, and/or theme. Add transitions to make it smooth, then adjust it to the proper length. Simmer until done, add the proper format, then mail it off.
