A Town of Artisans As you wind your way up the side of the mountain, hugging hairpin turns with no guardrails and overlooking dizzy, tumbling drop-offs that roll down to the river, you can t help but look upward in the hopes of a glimpse of San Pablito. The town is legendary for its Hñañhú (Otomí) paper, embroidery, and beadwork arts and its rich traditional culture, making it an enticing destination. Hñujú is the principal language spoken there, and in spite of the influence of foreign cultures, many ancient spiritual practices continue to thrive, making the community seem worlds away from the sprawling metropolis of Mexico City or coastal tourist resorts. Some neighbors in the next town still warn tourists about witchcraft in San Pablito, ensuring a sort of mystical allure. On misty days, thick, lingering clouds may cloak the whole town, but even on sunny days, it can be hard to spot from the road. San Pablito is hidden from many vantage points, tucked into the folds of the sierra (figs. 14 and 15). This beautiful and remote location has led most San Pableños to make a living as artisans, as other options are limited. The steep slopes and thin layer of topsoil make farming less than bountiful, prone to weather damage, and, one can imagine, a back-breaking chore. Even so, the mountain is dotted with small cornfields, rows of stubby peanut plants, clusters of sugar cane, and shaded coffee groves. Here and there traditional wild foods are still gathered, such as the spiky, scarlet 3

8 Living Art Designs and Crafts of the Otomí of San Pablito Nestled in the steep, sloping hills of the Sierra Madre, just north of Puebla, Mexico, lies the remote Otomí village of San Pablito. With limited farming opportunities here, many villagers rely on traditional crafts for income. Women create whimsical embroidery and beadwork arts inspired by Otomí legends and the region s rich plant and animal life. Men carve benches in the shapes of horses, armadillos, and burros. Sounds of artisans pounding bark into sheets of thin flat paper, or Amate, echo throughout the valley below. The Otomí crafts also serve traditional ceremonial purposes. Amate, for example, is carefully cut into mythological figures which curanderos (healers) use for curing ceremonies, and figures of seed spirits made from colorful tissue paper are used to encourage healthy crops. Despite the outside pressures of commercialism, the remarkable designs created by the villagers embody a rich cultural heritage that has been preserved for centuries. As one artisan explains, This is the work our ancestors gave us. In Living Art: Designs and Crafts of the Otomí of San Pablito, sixty Otomí artworks from the collections of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, are reproduced along with photographs of the remote Mexican village. The text by Kerin Gould who lived and worked in the community for two years and continues to visit regularly explores the history and origins of the Otomí culture, examining the legends and ceremonial practices that inspire the intricate designs of their modern-day creations. The foreword by curator Barbara Mauldin provides an overview of the many crafts unique to the Otomí of San Pablito. 92 pages, 9 x 8 inches Smyth-sewn casebound, with jacket More than 80 color images, chronology, and index Foreword by Barbara Mauldin, Curator of Latin American Folk Art, Museum of International Folk Art 2009 Museum of International Folk Art, New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs Text and photographs by Kerin Gould Kerin Gould $24.95 US ($31.95 Canada) ISBN Catalog No. A167 Available September 2009 Unless otherwise noted, all artworks courtesy Museum of International Folk Art, New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.
