The Art Of Printmaking Mexican Caleveras (Skulls) Symbols of Life Art 8 Mrs. Brosnan
Printmaking Printmaking is an indirect method of creating art where an intermediate plate is used to prepare a drawing that will be pulled to create the actual art work using ink or paint. The first recorded Printmaking dates back to the Chinese in the 2nd century AD where stone rubbings that were inked and rubbed with dampened paper have been documented. Japanese fishermen also recorded the size of their fish in the 8th century AD with a type of Printmaking called a rubbing. Today they are known as Gyotako. chinese stone print Japanese fish rubbing
Four Types Of Printmaking Relief-printing (from a raised surface) An example would be a rubber stamp, inked and pressed on paper. brayer Relief print can be made from wood, metal, linoleum or styrofoam. After drawing a picture on the surface, the artist cuts away the parts that will not be printed. Ink is rolled on the plate using a brayer or roller, and paper is placed on top pulling a mirror image. Intaglio (Etching) (from a cut surface) Tools called a burin are used to cut into metal or plexiglass. Ink is pushed into the cut areas and ink is wiped into the areas and wiped off the surface before wet paper is placed on top and a print is pulled. Planography(Lithography) (from a flat surface) printing from a flat stone or metal plate, a greasy crayon, pencil or ink used to draw then ink and water are applied. The greasy drawing absorbs the ink, the wet part does not. Acids are often used to etch the stone and prevent the grease from areas you do not want it to go. Invented in many prints can be pulled from this method but requires proper facilities.
Printmaking types cont. Stencil (Seriography) A stencil is a sheet of paper, fabric, plastic, metal or other material with designs cut, perforated or punched from it. Ink is forced through the openings onto the surface (paper, fabric etc.) to be printed. Sometimes called silk screening, serigraphy (seri means silk) is a type of stencil printing. In silk screening, a sheet of silk is stretched across a frame and either a stencil is fastened to the silk or an area of the silk is blocked out using a type of glue or shellac. A squeegee (rubber mounted tool) is used to push the ink through the small holes of the screen producing a print. Screen printing was developed in 1907 in Manchester, England by Samuel Simon
Artist used for inspiration Day of the Dead Prints inspired by Jose Posada. Jose Posada ( ) was a prolific Mex-i-can folk artist and political satirist from Aguascallientes in central Mexico. Posada began learning lithography (a form of printmaking using a metal plate) at age 16. Although he created over 20,000 engravings, he was mostly unrecognized as an artist during his life-time. However, his art influenced the work of other Mexican artists like Jose Orozco and Diego Rivera, who later dedicated a mural to his memory. Posada is best known for his calaveras (skull designs), especially his La Catrina engravings. La Calavera Catrina ("The Elegant Skull") was created as a parody of a Mexican upper-class female. Posada's striking image of a costumed female with a skeleton face has become associated with the Day of the Dead, and Catrina figures often are a prominent part of modern Day of the Dead observances. We will use Scratch Foam in this lesson to achieve high contrast, black and white prints inspired by Jose Posada. La Calavera Catrina ("The Elegant Skull")
Materials/Vocabulary Calevera Skull resource Relief print bench hook newsprint ink brayer/roller #2 or 4B pencil transfer styrofoam template (to trace) printing plate
Procedures Step 1 Take 1 piece of newsprint paper, a B pencil, and a piece of styrofoam from the demonstration table. Step 2 Fold the newsprint in half and using your pencil, trace around the template found on your table. (line straight edge up with the folded side) Step 3 Using your resource of a Mexican Calevera (skull), draw half of your design on traced half of newsprint using B pencil. Step 4 When you have completely drawn half your face (all the way to fold), open up your paper and fold in opposite direction. Using the transfer method as demonstration, apply pressure using your pencil to transfer the design on the other half of your paper to obtain SYMMETRY. Step 5 Tape newsprint paper with design facing up on styrofoam and carefully trace over indenting the styrofoam underneath with a dull pencil. (be careful not to apply too much pressure or you will risk cutting through your paper!) Step 6 When traced completely, remove from newsprint and proceed to printmaking station.
