Hayley Bercovitch November 2017 Individual Report Handle With Care is a personal story book highlighting the themes of fragility and loss. The book is ornamented with glass, mirrors, crystal-like gems, seashells, packaging paper, and dried-out rose petals in order to curate the theme of fragility. In the hollowed-out space in the book, the story emerges. Containing mementos such as newspaper clippings, snow-globes, and personal photographs in order to represent the loss of loved individuals in my life in an organic and ethereal manner. Rather than recreating the traditionally passive experience of reading a book, this piece creates an immersive and interactive experience for the viewer, as they can handle and observe the various loose objects within the book, providing them with a more active position in understanding the story. These keepsakes sit on top of a story, keeping with traditional book form. However, the highlighted words from the background story enhance and represent the rollercoaster of feelings that are associated and felt with loss. Ultimately, the mirrors will allow the viewer to look back on their own life, reflect upon the loved ones they have lost, and the ones currently being taken for granted, as life is extremely fragile and must be handled with care.
The original idea and concept of the project was to create a personal story book of the loss of loved ones in my life. Without revealing too much (as it is a big comfort leap for me to create an extremely personal piece), I created this piece utilizing themes that have been reflective of my life for a while now. Through the loss of my own loved ones (my mother, grandfather, and great-grandmother), as well as witnessing the loss of others, I have been very reflective of how fragile life is, and how deeply important it is to not take it (and individuals in my life) for granted. With these themes in mind, I decided to go fourth and look for all materials I could find in order to represent fragility. I purchased and collected personal items to be included in the piece, such as the gems, mirrors, seashells, rose petals, packaging paper, snow globes and other mementos, such as photographs, newspaper clippings, and jewelry. After purchasing and collecting, I immediately began to work on the prototype (which later became the final product). I painted the shadow box black, and utilized Krazy Glue to affix the gems along the frame of the cover which proved to work really well (some gems had to be re-glued due to running out of glue). The box itself still felt rough to touch, so I added the twine around the wood in order to create a more organic feel and allow easier handling by the viewer. I wanted to add the title of the book without taking away from the glass cover of the book, so I purchased stick-on letterings in order to be the least messy and intrusive as possible (I first wanted to crush the gems into a powder-like format and sprinkle that over glue to create letters but that proved undoable as I was unable to break the gems). Once the outside was completed (and dry) I moved onto to the meat of the project, the interior. This is the part I struggled with the most. I did not know how to architecturally and logistically arrange all of the interior components: debating between sectioned off corners, or
pages. I researched extensively without much luck as most ideas had been done before and were quite cliché. However, I showed one photo to my father for inspiration (see image below). He revealed to me that I can recreate the hollowed-out space (like the photo) without actually utilizing a real book to carve from which was actually a blessing in disguise, as a real book would make the piece way heavier than it already was, and I did not have to search endlessly for a book that would fit the exact dimensions of the box. To do so, I used building blocks found in my house, and affixed them around the edge of the hollow space using school glue. During the drying process, I took to the Internet to find a story about loss, from which I could highlight meaningful words from (as the story would not be read but would help create a book feel and meaningful experience). After a long while of researching, I came across a book called Rare Bird: A Memoir of Loss and Love by Anna Whiston- Donaldson and printed some of its pages. Reading through the pages inspired me to highlight specifically chosen words (such as death and tragedy), and after several frustrating cutting and pasting attempts, I was able to affix it to the base of the book and overtop the wooden blocks, using a combination of glue and double sided-adhesive. Once this was completed, I glued down some of the packaging tape along the inner frame of the box as well, in order to rid of the blankness of the paper and to create a more organic feel that was reflective of the outside cover. Once dry, I began to play around with the mementos and fragile objects that were to be included in the story. I quickly realized that many of the photos were way too large (and took up a lot of space in the box and hiding other elements). I carefully picked out the exact images I wanted,
which included some of my mother, and others featuring myself, my sister, my grandfather, and great-grandfather, to not only reflect the loss of their lives, but the loss of my childhood as well as my sister s; ultimately representing a nostalgic yearning for the past. I then scanned, decreased the size, and reprinted, some of the larger images to place inside the book. I did this because some of the originals were way too big and took up a majority of the room inside the book. Once printed, I began to assemble the interior. I placed all the fragile objects and mementos into the box, and glued the pieces of mirror into place. Lastly, I cleaned the front glass, carefully selected and placed the sticker letterings, and did final touch-ups with black paint. Throughout the project process, I made several discoveries. I had originally wanted to break the gems with a hammer and place the smaller pieces elsewhere in and outside of the project, as well as create the title with the gem s powder. However, after several attempts, I was unable to break the gems and could not do so in a safe manner. The same goes for larger pieces of mirror that I bought, which I wanted to shatter and glue to the base of the book (however, I later purchased smaller pieces of mirror which I was successful in breaking, and glued them to the base of the book). Working on this project has given me a new love for working physically with my hands, rather than digitally and constantly staring at a computer screen. I ve found it way easier to translate the ideas in my mind into a physical project, as it they are not being mediated by a screen or mouse. The ideas move directly from mind to fingers, streamlining the process. There is way more control working with your hands, I ve found it to alleviate a lot of the strain and frustration of working with complex digital software. Throughout the semester, I have also gained a newfound appreciation for peer feedback, and in this case, feedback from my father. I have realized that my peers can often see things that I cannot during the creative process, as they can offer a fresh outsider perspective that I cannot
achieve. My peers (and father) have often provided great feedback and suggestions, as well as sparking new ideas for me. With more time (and perhaps better transportation), I would have bought my own pieces of wood and glass, in order to allow further customization to the book s shape (and save several dollars). I would have also visited other stores to find materials (particularly the gems and mirrors) as I spent a lot of money on resources that could have been found cheaper, elsewhere (as suggested to me at the peer review prototype session).
