Select four centers to use ths unt. Assgn a teacher to set up and supervse each center wth no more than sx chldren. Materals IMPORTANT: Do not allow any small toys n the classroom. Frst check all toys for sze. You can obtan a safety cylnder from a pedatrcan. Any object that can ft nto the cylnder s too small and could cause a chld to choke. Housekeepng Center 2 washable dolls (of dverse ethncty, e.g., black and whte), play food, dshes and 2 small blankets Story Center smple books wth lmted text (cardboard are the most sturdy and durable) and large pllows Block Center set of large blocks, people, anmal fgures (plastc or wooden) and toy cars Puzzle Center 1 puzzle for each chld (for twos each puzzle pece tself should be a complete famlar object, for threes most can complete a 20-pece puzzle). NOTE: A puzzle should have all the peces. If a puzzle pece s lost, the entre puzzle should be thrown out. Instructons Gude the play n each center renforcng the unt theme. Refer to the followng example for help n drectng play and askng relevant questons. Set up the Housekeepng center as a boat. Have dfferent chldren take turns rowng the boat and puttng up pretend sals. Bble Story Text Mark 4:35-41 Materals For the teacher: Bble fan (for wnd) water spray bottle (for ran) 1 large pece of poster board (to make thunder) yellow crepe paper strps (for lghtnng) large blue sheet or tablecloth (for the sea) large box or laundry basket (for the boat) have enough for all the chldren n the small group to be seated nsde one sheet scarf Preparaton 1. Before the chldren arrve set up the Bble Story area as follows: A. Plug n the fan and place t where the chldren won t be able to reach t. B. Spread out the blue sheet on the floor as the sea. Crumple the fabrc to represent waves. C. Place the boxes on the sheet as boats. D. Drape the sheet over your shoulder and te t at your wast wth the scarf. 2. Fll the spray bottle wth water. Be Quet! As the chldren come nto the center nvte them to step nto one of the boats. Hello! Come n and st down n our boat. Let s pretend ths s the boat Jesus was n wth hs dscples. You pretend to be the dscples, and I wll pretend to be Jesus. Open the Bble. One day Jesus and hs dscples were out n the boat. Jesus was very tred and he lay down and went to sleep. Whle he was sleepng, a storm started. Have you ever felt the wnd blow really hard n a storm? Turn on the fan, so t blows on the chldren. Do you feel the wnd blowng? Have you ever been outsde and gotten all wet from the ran? Hold out your hand, and feel the ran. Spray ther hands wth water from the spray bottle. The Bble says t started to ran. Then t started thunderng. Gve a chld the poster board to shake to make sounds of thunder. And then the lghtnng started. Gve two chldren yellow streamers. Have them stand up and shake the streamers to look lke lghtnng. How do you thnk the dscples felt? Do you thnk they felt scared? Yes, they were very scared. Have you ever been scared of a storm when the ran and thunder are very loud? Do you thnk Jesus was scared? Do you know what he was dong? Le down on the floor and pretend to be asleep. He was sound asleep! He was not afrad at all. The dscples woke hm up sayng, Jesus, wake up! We are afrad of the storm! Jesus woke up and looked around. Do you thnk he was afrad? Stand up, and hold out your arms. He just stood up and sad to the storm, Quet! Be stll! (Mark 4:39). Do you know what happened when he sad ths? The wnd stopped! Turn off the fan. The ran stopped! Put away the spray bottle. The thunder stopped. Put away the poster board. The lghtnng stopped, put away the streamers, and the waves settled down on the lake. Smooth out the sheet. And everyone was safe! Do you thnk the dscples felt happy? Yes, they were very happy! Jesus has so much power! He can tell a storm to stop and t obeys hm rght away. The Bble says, Jesus cares for me. Cut out and color the felt board fgures and wndows from the copes of Reproducble Pages A, B, and C. 2. Lamnate the fgures to make them last longer. 3. Place a rolled pece of tape on the back of each fgure. 4. Famlarze yourself wth the songs and the story. Instructons Show the chldren each felt board fgure. Ths s a young boy. Do you remember hs name? Davd! Ths s hs sster. Do you remember her name? Her name s Lesl. Ths s the baby. She s growng and gettng bgger! Now she can walk and talk. Do you remember her name? Her name s Sarah! These are the baby-stters. Ther names are Barry and Debbe. Do you have baby-stters that come and take care of you sometmes? Place Sarah, Davd, Lesl, Barry and Debbe on the felt board. Mommy and Daddy had just left the house for ther annversary. They would be back tomorrow but baby Sarah was scared and sad wthout her mommy. Lesl came over and gave Sarah a hug. Then they went nto the ktchen to play whle Debbe cooked dnner. Sarah was happy now. I am so proud of you Sarah. Lesl sad to her. You are a bg grl, and you are havng fun wth Barry and Debbe! You are not afrad! Mommy tells me that I never have to be afrad because Jesus always watches over me. He watches over you, too! Dnner was delcous, and t was fun playng games wth Barry and Debbe after dnner. Soon t was tme for bed. Everyone got ready for bed. Barry tucked n Davd after he sad hs prayers. Debbe tucked n the grls and helped them say ther prayers. Of course, Sarah dd not say much n her prayer except God and Amen! Debbe turned off the lght. It was dark n the room. Baby Sarah lay very stll and quet. But then suddenly she saw somethng. It was a shadow. Place the shadow wndow on the felt board. Sarah was scared. She started to cry. It s okay, sad Lesl. you do not have to be afrad. Lesl turned on the lght. See! It was only a shadow. A shadow cannot hurt you. We should not be afrad. Mommy says that Jesus watches over me, so I know he watches over you, too. I wll sng to you what Mommy sngs to me when I am afrad. Sng Jesus Loves Me from the Unt 20 Song Sheet. When Lesl fnshed sngng Sarah was sound asleep. But n the mddle of the nght a storm started. Remove the shadow wndow and replace t wth the storm wndow. The ran was loud, the thunder was even louder and the lghtnng was very brght. Baby Sarah woke up scared and she started to cry. Davd came to her bedsde. It s okay, Sarah, he sad. It s only the wnd and the ran. I know t s very loud, but t wll not hurt you. Daddy says that Jesus can make the ran and the wnd stop. He wll watch over you. I wll sng to you what Daddy sngs to me when I am afrad. Sng Jesus Loves Me agan. When Davd fnshed sngng the song, Sarah was sound asleep. 7 C r a f t Boat n the Storm The chldren wll make a boat to renforce the lesson that Jesus calmed the storm. Materals For each chld: 1 pece of lght blue constructon paper, 9" x 12" 1 pece of black constructon paper, 9" x 12" 1 pece of yellow constructon paper, 2" x 2" 1 cotton ball 1 gold ppe cleaner 4 brass fasteners 10 blue crepe paper squares, 2" 1 blue crepe paper streamer, 11" yarn, 12" glue stck crayons For the teacher: brown constructon paper, 1 pece for every 3 chldren scssors glue hole punch black marker Reproducble Pages: Page D, 1 copy for the teacher Page E, 1 copy for each chld Preparaton 1. Cut out the boat and sun stencls and the fgures of Jesus and the dscples from the copes of Reproducble Pages D and E. 2. Trace and cut out two boats from brown constructon paper and one sun from yellow constructon paper for each chld. 3. Make two boat pctures for each chld as follows: A. Glue the pcture wth Jesus sleepng onto one boat. B. Attach the boat wth a brass fastener 1 1 / 2" up from the bottom and centered on the black constructon paper. See Fgure A. C. Cut each ppe cleaner n half and bend them to look lke lghtng bolts. Wth the brass fastener straddlng the ppe cleaner lghtnng bolt, (See Fgure B) nsert the brass fastener through the black constructon paper. Place one on each sde of the boat. See Fgure C. D. Glue the other pcture wth Jesus awake onto the other boat. E. Attach ths boat wth a brass fastener 1 1 / 2" up from the bottom and centered on the blue constructon paper. 4. Place the black paper on top of the blue paper and punch two holes, 3" from the corners and 1" from the top. See Fgure C. 5. Cut the blue streamers nto one 12" pece and eleven 2" squares for each chld. 6. Cut one 18" pece of yarn for each chld. 7. Make a model of the craft followng the nstructons. Instructons 1. Show the chldren your model of the craft. Brefly tell the story. Startng wth the frst page tell of the storm and Jesus sleepng n the boat. Turn to the next page wth Jesus standng up. Wow! Jesus told the storm to stop, and t stopped! The storm obeyed rght away! 2. Gve each chld a prepared pece of black constructon paper. Show the chldren how to rock the boat n the storm. 3. Put ten dots of glue across the bottom of each black sheet of paper and gve each chld ten squares of blue crepe paper to put onto the dots. 4. Gve each chld a prepared pece of blue constructon paper. Wrte ther names on the back. 5. Gve each chld a sun to glue above the boat on the blue paper. 6. Gve each chld a cotton ball. Have them pull t apart and glue t to the blue paper above the boat as clouds. 7. Run a small lne of glue across the bottom of each pece of blue paper and help the chldren place a 11" pece of crepe paper on top of the glue as calm water. 8. After the glue has dred, place the black paper on top of the blue paper and thread the yarn through the two holes on the top, tyng each end loosely to allow the pages to be turned. Tape the pece of whte poster board under the table as a move screen. C. Tape the flashlght to a char and place t at the open end of the table so that t shnes on the poster board. D. Practce makng shadows to be sure that you have the rght amount of lght. 2. Practce makng dfferent knds of shadows wth your hands. Instructons 1. Today we are gong to make shadows. Who knows what a shadow s? Demonstrate a shadow for the chldren. Have you ever seen your own shadow when you were outsde? 2. Make dfferent types of shadows for the chldren. Some shadows look funny. Materals For each chld: 1 / 2 sheet of black constructon paper, 4 1 / 2" x 12" 1 pece of brown constructon paper, 2 1 / 2" x 4" 1 pece of whte constructon paper, 2 1 / 2" x 2 1 / 2" 3 peces of slver curlng rbbon, 12" 2 peces of yarn, 12" and 18" 2 strps of blue crepe paper (streamers), 12" glue stck crayons For the teacher: scssors tape hole punch stapler black marker hole renforcers Reproducble Pages: Page F, 1 copy for the teacher Preparaton 1. Prepare a pece of paper for each chld as follows, see Fgure A: A. Cut a 4 1 / 2" x 12" pece of black constructon paper for each chld. B. Punch two holes at the top of the paper and place a hole renforcer on each hole. Each hole should be 3 1 / 2" n from the sde of the paper and 1" down from the top. C. Cut one 18" pece of yarn for each chld. D. Te the yarn to the paper, one end n each hole as a handle. 2. Cut two 1 1 / 2" x 12" peces of crepe paper for each chld. 3. Cut each 12" pece of crepe paper n half lengthwse makng them 3 / 4" x 12". 4. Cut two 12" peces of slver rbbon for each chld. Curl each pece. 5. Cut out the stencls from the copy of Reproducble Page F. 6. Make a boat for each chld as follows, see Fgure B: A. Trace and cut out a boat from brown constructon paper. B. Trace and cut out a sal from whte constructon paper. C. Cut a 12" pece of yarn for each chld. D. Tape the boat to the end of the yarn. E. Tape the sal to the yarn 1" above the boat. NOTE: for stablty, tape the yarn down completely to the back of the sal. 7. Make a model of the craft followng the nstructons. Instructons 1. Show the chldren the sample craft. Gently blow on the boat so that t sways. Gve each chld a turn. When we blow on the boat t s lke the wnd n a storm. Then Jesus says, Stop, wnd! And guess what happens? The wnd stops. Let s make a wndsock boat for you to take home! 2. Gve each chld a prepared pece of constructon paper. Help each chld to draw a lne of glue wth a glue stck across the bottom of the paper, leavng 1" margns at the short ends. 3. Gve each chld a pece of yarn wth the boat attached. Help each chld to affx the free end of the yarn on the glue n the center of the paper. See Fgure C. 4. Gve each chld two peces of slver rbbon as lghtnng. Help each chld to affx one end of each pece of rbbon, shny sde down, n the glue on ether sde of the yarn. 5. Gve each chld four peces of crepe paper for ran. Help each chld to place two peces of crepe paper on ether sde of the paper n the glue. 6. Place a long pece of tape across each pece of crepe paper, rbbon and yarn to hold them n place. See Fgure D. 7. Help each chld to curl the paper around so that the ends overlap. Staple the ends together. See Fgure E. 8. Wrte each chld s name on ther craft. Concluson Let s all pretend the storm s comng. Blow your boat and your water! Wow! Look at those storms blowng! Now pretend you are Jesus. Say, Stop, storm! What happened? The storms stopped blowng!
