Tuesday: Breaking News Tuesday Warm-up Location Multipurpose Room or Learning Center Estimated Time 15 minutes Say: Let s watch a video on some interesting facts about where Ling Sung is from. Top Ten Facts About China of 42

Tuesday Activity 1 Dancing Rice Experiment Location Multipurpose Room or Learning Center Estimated Time minutes Description China is the world s largest rice producer, and one of the earliest centers of rice cultivation. For thousands of years. For the Chinese people, rice is the staple food in everyday meals. They eat it as Westerners do with bread. Objective Members will investigate what happens when baking soda and vinegar is added to water and rice. Clear container Water Baking soda What You Need Vinegar Rice Spoon Food coloring How to Prepare Note: I encourage you to let children add the ingredients all on their own. It could get messy (so do this in an area you can easily wipe up), but allowing the kids to do this activity independently will allow for all kinds of exploration and observations. Pour one cup of water into your clear container. 1 2 Add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the water and stir of 42

3 Sprinkle some rice into the mixture. What happens to the rice? Why do you think this happens? The rice sinks to the bottom because it is denser than the water. (If your rice doesn t sink, it might be less dense than the water. Try a different kind of rice, broken pieces of vermicelli, or raisins.) Add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the water. What happens? Why? The vinegar reacts with the baking soda in the water creating bubbles of carbon dioxide. 4 5 Observe what happens over the next few minutes. Eventually the rice will begin to dance. As bubbles of carbon dioxide adhere to the rice, the rice is brought up to the surface. Once it reaches the surface, the gas is released, and the rice falls back down again. 6 Add a little more baking soda, as the chemical reaction slows down and watch what happens. Then try adding more vinegar. Can you make the rice continue to dance? If you are using a larger container, be sure to use larger amounts of baking soda and vinegar of 42

A parallelogram is a four-sided figure with each side parallel to the opposite side. Make a square piece of paper. To start making the square, fold one corner of a piece of paper over to the adjacent side. To finish making the square, cut off the small rectangle, forming a square. 1 2 Fold the square piece of paper in half, then in half again (making a square that is divided into quarters). Repeat this step (resulting in a of 42

square divided into sixteenths). Unfold the paper. Draw lines along the red lines marked at the left. Cut along these lines. You will now have seven pieces: a small square, two small isosceles triangles, a medium-sized isosceles triangle, two large isosceles triangles, and a parallelogram. 3 Arrange the seven pieces into shapes, making animals, people, everyday objects, etc. See how many you can make - invent new ones! Members will identify similarities and differences amongst themselves. Mural or construction paper (brightly-colored paper is best) What You Need Scissors Glue Tape How to Prepare Before the lesson use craft or construction paper, trace and cut out a life-size silhouette/outline of a person. To avoid gender- or racespecific figures, you might want to cut the figure from green or blue paper. Gather students in a group and introduce them to their new "classmate. (Give the figure a name) Say: New students often have difficulty fitting in because they are entering a situation where groups of students have already formed bonds of friendship. Point out that some people will automatically put up barriers to a new student, deciding quickly -- without even trying to get to know him or her -- that they dislike the new student. Ask students to imagine that the figure) has just come into a classroom where bonds already have formed; the atmosphere is very unwelcoming. Invite students, one at a time, to say something mean to Greenie. They will have to use their imaginations, because Greenie has no specific features they can pick on. The teacher might even start the ball rolling by saying something like "We don t want you here, Greenie, or "We don t like people who are different from us, or "Your hair is a mess, Greenie. Each time a mean thing is said to Greenie, the teacher rips off a piece of Greenie's body and hands it to the person who made the comment. (When ripping, rip of 42

4 5 6 large chunks; it will need to be obvious to students where each chunk fits into the whole if they are to piece Greenie back together.) Tape Greenie back together after everyone has said a negative comment. Invite each student who said something mean about Greenie to come up and use tape to reattach his/her piece of Greenie in its proper place. As each piece is reconnected, the student must apologize to Greenie for the mean thing that was said. Look at how the figure s body looks after all the pieces have been put back on it. Ask questions to lead students to the understanding that, although some of the damage has been repaired, the figure will never be exactly the same. His feelings were hurt, and the scars remain. Chances are those scars will never go away. Hang the figure on a wall as a reminder of the power words have to hurt. The figure s presence will serve as constant reinforcement of a vivid lesson in kindness. Thursday Cool Down Estimated Time 5 minutes Members will share 3 things they learned, 2 things they have a question about, 1 thing they want the instructor to know and share out of 42
