2 Number Rockets *Match the number rocket to the dot. *Play Concentration using number and dot rockets. *Create math problems using either number or dot rockets. Write the math sentence.

3 Rocket Math Put 5 small rockets under the plate. Remove 2 rockets from under the plate. How many rockets are still under the plate? Put 1 more rocket under the plate. How many rockets are under the plate now? Write math sentences to show what you did. Find as many combinations as possible.

4 Alphabet Rockets *Use the alphabet rockets as flashcards to identify the letters of the alphabet. *Match the upper case and lower case letter cards. *Rockets Up! The student with the beginning letter of the word called by the teacher holds up (jumps up with) his or her rocket. *Use the alphabet cards to spell words. *Put the letter cards in alphabetical order.

5 Rocket Construction *Build a rocket from blocks. *Discuss symmetry. Build a symmetrical rocket using pattern blocks. *Rocket Build-It! In groups of 3, taking turns: In turn, each student will Roll a die. Choose the number of blocks shown on the die. Build a rocket. When all 3 rockets are built, compare the 3 rockets using position and size comparison words.

6 Recycled Rockets Design and construct a model rocket with recyclable materials.

7 Tangram Rockets *Get in Shape: use p. 86. Students will: Color the squares red. Color the rectangles blue. Color the triangles green. Cut out the shapes and glue on your rocket. *Design a rocket using paper or magnetic tangrams. *Design a large floor rocket using carpet, foam or cardboard tangrams.

8 Rocket Patterns *Use rocket cards, astronaut counters, and/or rocket die-cuts to make sequence patterns. *Make a sequence pattern using the small paper rocket cards printed in various colors. Glue the pattern to a strip of adding machine tape. Use these for bulletin board or learning center borders.

9 Rockets by Size *Cut out the rockets found on p. 85. *Sequence them from tallest to shortest. *Now sequence them from shortest to tallest and glue them on the paper strip.

10 Rocket Rhymes * Sing or say 3,2,1...Liftoff rocket rhymes. * Make up your own song or rhyme.

11 Launching Paper Rockets * Color the squares red. * Color and cut out the 2-piece rocket (page 80, for younger students) or from the Rockets guide (page 65) for older students. * Carefully glue the edges print side out (glue stick width is good) leaving the bottom edge open. * When dry, write your name on rocket and insert a drinking straw into the bottom. * Go to the Solar System Launch area. * At the starting line, blow into the straw with one short, strong breath to launch the rocket. * Measure the distance your rocket traveled using standard or non-standard units.

12 Balloon Rockets * Build a balloon rocket as shown. * Predict what will happen to the balloon when air escapes. * Launch the rocket completing a countdown as air is released. Use the concept of opposites when discussing directions of air and balloon. * Discuss what happened. What made the balloon travel different distances? * Discuss variables. (balloon shapes, balloon sizes, types of string, sizes of straws, slope of string, etc.). * Design an experiment to test the effect of one or more variables on the distance the balloon rocket travels.

13 Estes Air Rockets 1. Detach pump from launch tube base and extend the hose the full length. 2. Attach launch tube to launch base. 3. Lower rocket onto launch tube. 4. Pump until gauge reads desired altitude. 5. Clear launch area, count down 5,4,3,2,1 then press the launch button for LIFT-OFF!

14 Aerodynamic Forces & Rockets 1. Drag - Through the water, move hand parallel (palm down) to the bottom the tub. Then with the hand held perpendicular (sideways), move it side to side. Describe how this same principle applies to objects in air. 2. Gravity - Fly a paper airplane made of copy paper and one made of construction paper. Describe how and why the two flights are different. 3. Lift - Hold a piece of paper parallel to the ground and held taut at two adjacent corners. Blow across the top of the paper. Describe what happens and why. (The faster moving air on top decreases the air pressure above the paper.) 4. Thrust - Make a balloon rocket as shown and fly it from one end of the string. Think of variables you could test to see if they affect the flight of balloon rockets.
