Her father, Vasant Khanolkar, fought in the Indian Independence Movement. Her mother was a member of Swadar, an organization that helped women suffering from financial, educational, and health related problems. In 1985, after hearing about the Sardar Sarovar dam, Medha Patkar visited the place and noticed that the people who were living on the banks of the river had many questions right from why their permission was not taken before planning to build the dams.
