2 INTRO Fiction Writing is for those interested in writing short stories and novels. Fiction gives a lot of freedom for authors to freely express and challenge themselves. Fiction Writing will cover all the genres and sub genres that are selling today. We will explore writing samples, create ideas, develop characters, settings, and plot. Learn terms that are commonly used in this field. Learn how to organize, set-up, write, edit, and revise a manuscript.

3 GENRES OF FICTION Romance Sub genres of Romance are: -Historical Romance -Contemporary Romance -Romantic Suspense - Erotica Romance - Western Romance - Paranormal Romance - New Adult Romance -Christian Romance -Love Inspired Romance

4 GENRES OF FICTION Romance- is a love story between one or more characters. Mystery- is story about solving crimes, finding clues, detectives, sleuthing. Thrillers- are stories about more chilling and highly dangerous crimes, includes DEA, FBI, CIA agents, psychological killers and etc.. Sci-Fi Fantasy are stories that incorporate fairy tales, advance technology, warfare, paranormal beings all in one book.

6 SAMPLE PIECE OF A ROMANCE: Hold on tight, he told me. I didn t think I d make it out of there. The house came down. Just at the moment he grabbed me. BOOM!!!! The place where I was born collapsed. I couldn t shake off the feeling that this wouldn t be the last bad thing to happen to me. The firemen came. Trying with all their might to take out the flames, which only rose higher yet. They didn t know it was black magic. Someone didn t want me alive. And now that I survived, I will find them. Whoever did this, is going to pay. Until then, I clung onto the handsome stranger. He took me to his truck. And from there, we left what was left of my former life.

7 I am a witch. A white witch to be exact. There are only a few of us that exist. Or that I know of. I have never met another white witch before. How do you tell who is a witch and who isn t? My grandmother was going to teach me that, until she passed away. She passed away three months before the fire. Damon, the handsome stranger that came to my rescue that fatal day, has let me live with him. He is a white witch too. His whole family are white witches. Yeah, I almost choked on my dinner, when they told me. After dinner, they all took turns teaching me how to recognize another white witch versus a black one. The black ones as you can guess practice black magic. There s a special stone that heats up, when you re near another witch. If the stone turns white, you are safe. Because it s a white witch. If it stays black, you better run! Black witch alert!

8 Damon, didn t think my humor was funny. I told him, I try to make bad situations lighter. But, he still remained like a stone statue. Until, I got super close to him. I noticed his whole body was slightly shaking. Ah ha! So, you are laughing! I said smacking his arm playfully. Finally, he lets out his laughter. Shaking harder now. Sorry, it s just the way you say things, he explained looking at my eyes. Feeling the blush forming, I glance down at an old book. It has spells every white witch is supposed to know. Damon and his family are teaching me. But at the moment, we both got distracted. It wasn t hard. Damon was super-hot. He wouldn t say so, but trust me every girl would tell you the exact same thing. He turned women s heads everywhere he went. He was tall, dark black hair cut military style, and had an awesome physic. And he had a way of making you feel like you belonged. Especially since my only family member passed away, I had no one. No home either. I still have no clue as to who did it or why. But, Damon is super protective of me. And his family treats me like one of their own. I m glad it was Damon, who came to my rescue. I don t know where I would be today without him. Or his family.

9 After reading this small sample piece of a romance story answer these questions: What is the story s beginning conflict? Who are the two main characters in the story? What point of view is the story being told from? Did the story introduce the character(s), setting, and conflict? If so, what is the setting of the story?

10 VOCABULARY PART 1 Protagonist is the good character in a story. Aka the hero. Setting- Is where the story takes place. Antagonist- is the villain is the story. The trouble maker. This character prevents the protagonist from completing his/or her goal(s). Plot- is the action of the story. Conflict- is the problem(s) that a character experiences throughout the story. It also moves the plot forward.

11 BRAINSTORMING! On a piece of paper, jot down an idea for a Romance story. You need at least one protagonist, one antagonist, a setting, three conflicts, and a resolution ( how does the conflict get solved? Or what did your protagonist reach his/ or her goal(s) why or why not?). Write all this down either in a list format or in paragraph form.

12 MYSTERY WRITING Mysteries involve detectives, sleuths, crimes, and clues. Mysteries need suspense to keep the plot moving forward. Suspense is the anticipation that something great will happen. Suspense keeps readers on edge. Mystery is a very popular genre to write.

14 SAMPLE MYSTERY PIECE I was walking alone or so I thought. Crunch, crunch, crunch. Something was out there. Fear over took my reasoning.. Glancing around, I noticed a fury dog in the distance. I was about to go after it, until..something poked me. I jumped. Hey!, Max screamed at me. I swear my little brother could be a nuisance. Turning back, I could no longer see the dog. I wondered why it was heading further into the forest. Most dogs went near people and food. Not turn away from it all. My curiosity was eating at me. Max started poking me in my back again. Okay, enough!, I told him. Taking his hand, we walked back to the house.

15 VOCABULARY PART 2 Suspense- The on edge feeling readers get. Anticipation of something great that will occur. Point of view (POV)- The view point that the story is being told. 1 ST Person POV- Uses I 2 ND Person POV- Uses you 3 rd Person POV- Uses objective pronouns. He, She, It, or They Never use you, or I.

16 BRAINSTORMING PART 2 Referring back to the tiny sample of mystery fiction: Could you sense the character s awareness of the furry dog? Could you feel a little bit of suspense building up..until the character s brother poked her? What do you think the fury dog was? Was it really just a dog? And why did the character, despite her fear feel compelled to find out what it was?

17 WRITING CHALLENGE Write a short mystery scene like the sample you just read. Your response should be a paragraph long. Be sure to describe your scene s setting. Where is the scene happing? Where are your character(s)? Also add suspense to your scene. Make readers think something is about to happen

18 CREATING A CHARACTER PROFILE Create a character profile in a list format to help develop your character s personality and physic into your story. To create a profile make a list for each character. That includes: name, age, height, built, hobbies, like, dislikes, personality, quirks, occupation and etc. Take ten minutes now to create your character(s) profile(s).

19 STORY IDEAS: An ex-boyfriend or ex-girlfriend shows up in your character's town. Your character gets lost on the way somewhere. And ends up someplace more interesting. The phone rings. Heavy breathing on the other end. Then the connection is cut. A relative your character doesn't get along with shows up on your character's doorstep. Your character gets a job offer that would require him/her to make dramatic lifestyle changes.

20 MORE STORY IDEAS: Someone your character thought was a friend or ally suddenly turns against him or her

21 WHAT ARE SCENES? After completing or filling in almost as much as you can on your character profiles, you need to create your first scene! Scene is like the mystery sample that your read. Think of each chapter in a book as a scene. Each scene in your story will contain 3 items: goal what your character wants, conflict- make it hard for your character to get what he/or she wants, & disaster- is like a dead end. It leaves your character feeling loss and brings in new information.

22 WRITING YOUR 1 ST SCENE Take several moments to write your first scene. Remember that a scene contains three things: a goal, a conflict, and a disaster.

24 WHAT ARE SEQUELS? Every scene in a story has a sequel. A sequel happens after the scene (which contains the action). So, a sequel is the reaction of a scene. A sequel contains 3 items: reaction, dilemma, and decision. Reaction- what is the character s state of mind after the disaster from the scene? Dilemma- lay out the choice of actions that your character will choose from. Decision- is your characters next choice of action for the next scene.

26 BEGINNING OUTLINE FOR YOUR STORY CALLED ACT I Act I Is the beginning of your story. You need to write 3 scenes and 3 sequels. After every one of your scenes write a sequel. Your should have 3 scenes & 3 sequels total! Remember to think of the scenes as actions and think of the sequels as the reactions.

30 CHARACTER CHANGE What was your main character s attitude and personality like at the beginning of your story? How did your main character change at the end?

31 WRITING A SYNOPSIS To write a synopsis for this course: - synopsis needs to be 1-2 pages long -needs to be typed in Times New Roman, size 12 font -your synopsis needs to tell me who, what, when, where, and how s of your story.
