The Pardoner s Tale and A Simple Plan Essay A Review of the Five-Paragraph Essay
Layout Your essay should be a group of paragraphs that all work together to develop a single focus. This single focus is expressed in a thesis statement. The rest of the paragraphs in the essay should be organized to develop that thesis statement.
Paragraph One Your first paragraph should be your introduction. It needs to do two things: 1. Capture the reader s attention with a strong lead (first sentence) Can be a startling observation, an intriguing statement, or a quotation 2. Introduce the focus of the essay in a thesis statement
Creating a Thesis Your thesis should be one sentence. It should appear at the end of the introductory paragraph. It should thoroughly and concisely capture the main idea of your paper. Keep checking back as you write your paper to see if your thesis still sums up what you have written as a whole.
Thesis Examples Sample Prompt: Explain why a healthy diet is important. Weak Thesis Examples: Too broad: A healthy diet is important. Too narrow: People should include eight servings of fruits and vegetables in their diet everyday. Off topic: Bananas are one of the most nutritious foods on earth. Strong Thesis: A healthy diet is important because it increases energy, prevents illness and promotes wellbeing in all people.
Thesis Examples Sample Prompt: How does Kurt Vonnegut use literary elements to criticize the government in the short story, Harrison Bergeron? Weak Thesis Examples: Too broad: Vonnegut criticized the government in many ways. Too narrow: Vonnegut shows that Harrison deserves to be treated fairly, not like he is a freak. Off topic: Vonnegut was also critical of too much government control in several novels he wrote. Strong Thesis: In Harrison Bergeron, Vonnegut criticizes the government through the use of indirect characterization, irony, and external conflict.
Paragraphs Two through Four These paragraphs make up the body of the essay. The body develops, explains, and supports the key idea expressed in the thesis statement. It should be organized logically and each paragraph should relate to your thesis sub points.
Paragraphs Two through Four Each body paragraph has a topic sentence which is the very first sentence in the paragraph. This sentence restates the sub point you are going to talk about in the paragraph. The very last sentence in the paragraph should be a concluding sentence that restates your topic sentence, and drives home your point.
Examples Intro Paragraph/Thesis Maya Angelou is an accomplished African- American author in the United States. While growing up, she suffered tremendous hardship. Some of her most difficult life events are portrayed in novels and poems such as, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and, Still I Rise. Her written works often include strong themes such as perseverance through trials, love for family, and passionate optimism.
Examples Topic Sentence Using the Mayla Angelou thesis statement. The topic sentence should look like this. Her written works often include strong themes such as perseverance through trials, love for family, and passionate optimism. A reoccurring theme in Angelou s work is perseverance of the human spirit through trials in ones life. Concluding Sentence Clearly, Mayla Angelou expressed such strong themes in her stories and poems as perseverance through trials.
Transition Words Transition words are words that make your paragraphs follow smoothly. These words are normally used in the topic sentences, and concluding sentences in a paragraph. Examples: Listing different points; First, Second, Third; For additionally ideas; Also, Another, Furthermore; Concluding ideas; Clearly, Obviously, It is clear, Therefore, and Consequently, etc.
A Few No-No s No-No contractions! No-No spaces between paragraphs! No-No cover pages! No-No first person (I, me, my, we, our) or second person (you, your) writing! No-No verb tense changes (keep it in the present tense)! No-No maybe might be probably!
Paragraph Five The final paragraph of your essay is the conclusion. It should never introduce new info! It should also do two things: 1. Restate the thesis and sum up the support 2. Leave readers with a memorable statement, a call to action, or a thought
