1 English 303 Final Exam Review Your final exam is comprehensive, meaning that it will cover the entire semester. This review sheet helps to break down our semester into the individual units that we studied over the course of the year so far. Although it does not cover every question from the exam, it will walk you through all of the basic components of the exam. LITERARY TERMS AND HISTORICAL CONTEXT: Define each of the following: Salem Witch Trials (basic summary of the historical trial): Joseph McCarthy and The Red Scare Iconoclast Prohibition Characters: Part I: The Crucible John Proctor Abigail Williams Rev. John Hale Rev. Paris Rebecca Nurse Francis Nurse Dansforth Giles Corey Tituba Mary Warren 1. Explain some of the root causes of the witch hysteria, including the following: o o o Personal grudges Treatment of Women Fire and Brimstone Religion 2. In many ways, the play is about John Proctor s struggle with himself. Explain Proctor s shortcomings, and discuss how he changes over the course of the play. 3. How does Reverend Hale change from the time when he appears in Salem to the end of the play?

2 4. At the end of the play, Paris is reluctant to kill any more townspeople. What, specifically, motivates this reluctance? 5. Explain the moment when Proctor confesses his adultery. What two pieces of evidence does Gatsby offer to prove his story? 10. Gatsby befriends Nick for a very specific purpose. What does he want Nick to do for him? 11. When they take the trip to New York, Tom angrily reveals all that he s learned about Gatsby. What does Tom reveal about Gatsby s past and his fortune? 12. Specifically describe the car accident that took the life of Myrtle Wilson. 13. How, exactly, does Gatsby die and who is responsible? 14. Describe Gatsby s funeral and list all those who attend. 15. Why are the billboard and the valley of ashes important in the novel?

5 Part IV: Grammar *Please be sure to review ALL of the grammar from our first unit (i.e. look at the notes!), but I have pulled out a few sections in order for you to receive special practice. Run-ons and Comma Splices Determine where to break each of the following sentences. 1.
