Bardsley 1 Susan Bardsley Professor Halbert English 102 HC 6 April 2008 Final Draft to Be Graded Yesterday and Today: Society s Role in Halloween Thirty years ago, when shows like the Brady Bunch represented a false image of society and the issues of child abuse were basically swept under the rug when a case was filed, Hollywood took great advantage of these fallacies and brought the genre of horror closer to conventional culture than any other decade before. The classic characters like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Mummy rarely appeared in the movies and a new type of boogeyman stole the screen. The 1978 movie Halloween, by John Carpenter, had one of the greatest effects on its audience during this era, making it the perfect remake opportunity thirty years later. Rob Zombie, director of the 2007 remake of Halloween, put a great deal of time and inspired ideas into the remake and was able to turn it into his own work. Both of these bloodcurdling movies tell the same story, but the differences in the two cultures gave Rob Zombie the advantage to film a terrific remake with new suspense and gore. The thought that someone could have the capability of killing whoever they pleased, feeling no remorse or regret was what made John Carpenters Halloween a classic. He was able to create a monster that had the physical aspects of a human being, but the strength and determination of something far from human. In the credits, he was listed as The Shape, basically describing him as an emotionless killer behind an expressionless mask (Harrington 1). In the beginning of the 1978 movie Michael Myers brutally murdered his sister and her

Bardsley 2 boyfriend. When his parents get home they find Michael just standing there with the mask on his face and a blood covered knife in his hand. When his father pulls off the mask, he reveals a six year old child who shows no emotion to what he has done. The audience was taken by this scene because it was not normal to have a young, innocent child killing other human beings for no reason and showing no remorse. Carpenter fails to offer an explanation that shows why Michael had become a murderer, which leads the audience to believe he is simply a devil child who will never stop killing. This scene in the movie was also a huge risk for Carpenter to take. Horror movies during these times never portrayed the monster as a human being, let alone a child. Carpenter knew that by using a child to portray a devil-like figure would make his movie truly unique and a successful horror flick. The audience was captivated by this because instead of seeing these horrific things on the news every time they happen, they were watching it in a movie, seeing what sometimes happens behind closed doors. The media wanted to portray our country as a happy-go-lucky place where broken homes and abused children were far from the truth. During these times, child abuse and murder were happening all the time, but these horrible things were kept quiet in society for so long, but people started to talk more and more, and over the next few years the truth came out of the millions of Americans suffering from abuse. In 1972 only 60,000 child abuse incidents were brought to official attention in the U.S; in 1976 the number passed the half-million mark (Sheils 1). The National Center on Child Abuse and Neglect estimates that the reported cases represent only half of the child abuse that goes on. Many states than required doctors to report cases of child abuse and, under the 1974 Child Abuse and Prevention Act, the U.S. Congress had earmarked $85 million to treat abused youngsters and their parents (Sheils 1).

Bardsley 3 Carpenter also brings teenage premarital sex into his movie numerous times, making it the final action of a few characters before they are killed by Myers. During the movie, Michael is after his sister Laurie, who is portrayed as the innocent teen who should not be killed because she decides to babysit on Halloween night instead of having sex, like her friends were doing. It s tragic. You never go out. You must have a small-fortune stashed from babysitting so much, (Halloween) said Laurie s friend Annie. Laurie responds by saying, The guys think I m too smart (Halloween). Her friends were portrayed as the dumb teenagers who were obviously not able to overcome Michael. Later in the movie Dr. Loomis, who is the therapist who worked with Michael since he was a child, and Marion, a fellow nurse, refer to Michael as it while driving together. Carpenter wanted Michael s character to be as human as possible in a physical aspect, but have the mind of a monster that doesn t deserve to be called human. At one point in the movie Dr. Loomis and Mr. Brackett, the town s sheriff, go to the house where Michael Myers lived as a child. As they search the house, Brackett with his flashlight, spots a small object in the corner of the living room. What is it? said Loomis, A dog said Brackett (Halloween). Loomis told Brackett that Myers got hungry and when Brackett replied, A man wouldn t do that, Loomis said, He isn t a man (Halloween). This scene definitely adds to the sense that Michael has the body of a human, but the mentality of a beast. For him to eat a dog just makes his character more horrifying to watch. Today, blood, gore and violence are the key aspects to a successful horror movie, but in Carpenters Halloween there was hardly any to be found. The horror came from the suspense and the horrifying character of Michael Myers, killing innocent human beings like it was completely normal without even the turn of a head. His hypnotically fraught atmosphere let one suspend

Bardsley 4 disbelief toward the unstoppable-killing-machine nature of the Shape, less man than supernatural force (Harvey 1-2). In Rob Zombie s remake of Halloween, he brought back the character of Michael Myers as his own, adding new scenes to create a horrific past that explains Myer s childhood. In the first half hour of the movie the audience views the childhood of Michael Myer s and watches him turn into an extremely angry child in a broken home. Zombie not only had Myers kill innocent teens, but shows how he started out killing animals. Than at the age of ten, taking the drastic step and kills a fellow schoolmate who bullies him. The first few scenes gave a stepping stone into Michael Myers life and gave a clear explanation for why he turned out the way he did. All of these terrible things Michael did during his childhood led him to suffer many psychological problems which grew even more intense as he continued killing. When Michael was sent away he began to obsess with making masks. One of the masks he made was black and when Dr. Loomis came to visit him one day he asked Michael why it was all black. Michael responded, Cause it s one of my favorite colors. Dr. Loomis replied, Well, actually, black isn't a color, is it? It's the absence of color. In the spectrum of colors, you go from black, which is no color, all the way through to white, which is every color. So, technically... not that it really matters - but black isn't a color (Halloween Remake). Throughout Carpenter and Zombie s movies Michael is referred to as it or not human. It would be perfect for Michael s favorite color to be black because they both represent something that they are not. Michael is like the color black, he is not like everyone else and therefore the absence of a normal society. He represents something that is not normal and therefore, in the spectrum of human beings he might look like the others, but never have the same quality and meaning as them.

Bardsley 5 Today, horror movies are much more revealing and grotesque than ever before. Zombie knew that his remake not only had to be much more graphic than the original, but it had to catch up with the times and include the horrors society struggles with today. Unlike the 70 s, our society is much more upfront and honest when it comes to child abuse. We thrive over any information we can get about a child abuse case, even if there is a tragic outcome. The movie was not only visually graphic to a large extent but, the sexual references made in the beginning of the movie were very extreme as well. Zombie wanted to make Michaels childhood look so terrible that it caused most of his psychological problems. He produced the cliché of a broken home, where Michael s mother was a stripper and her boyfriend was the verbally abusive pervert that tortured everyone in the house, especially young Michael. Jesus Christ, Ronnie, you know I have to work tonight. Someone around here has got to make some money. Said Michaels mother Deborah to her boyfriend. I m all broken up here bitch, I can t work, Ronnie replied (Halloween Remake). During this scene in the movie they are both going back and forth, screaming at one another while Michael is sitting at the kitchen table with his baby sister Laurie. He finally had enough of the fighting and says, I need to get out of here, (Halloween Remake). His mother took no consideration that he was around and throughout the movie the audience sees how neglected and disliked Michael was as a child. He not only had a broken home, but in school he was bullied and for Halloween his sister decides to have sex with her boyfriend instead of taking him trick-or-treating, so he is left alone. This scene in the movie that Zombie decided to incorporate not only gave the audience a clear definition of why Michael had so many problems, but made the audience feel some bit of sympathy for Michael. In Carpenters Halloween he left no room for sympathy, and Michael was simply a psychopathic killer, but Zombie wanted to incorporate what goes on in society today. He wanted to show the effects

Bardsley 6 child abuse has on a child, maybe going to the extreme, but he knew that our society deals with these kinds of incidents all the time, so to see those on the big screen would be far from shocking. Both Zombie s and Carpenter s Halloween s portray Michael Myers as the perfect serial killer, but each director was able to film a movie around the time period they were in, while still incorporating great suspense and thrill into each. Carpenter added enough gore and suspense in his movie so not to displease the audience, but capture their attention with a new monster and Zombie added the perfect amount of horror and sexual innuendo to fit with the society we live in today. Society s influence in each of these horror movies was so tremendous and the fact that both directors incorporated the reality of our time, yesterday and today, made each of these films classics in their own way.
