An Elaborate Murder Mystery What do you get when you combine a murder, $200 million, and a high-rise apartment building? The Westing Game, of course! If you enjoy solving puzzles and trying to figure out conundrums, then this book is for you. While reading the novel, you will be asked to examine evidence, look past appearances, and think critically, all in hopes of finding millionaire Sam Westing s killer. Be a Better Reader As you work through the study guide for The Westing Game, you ll also practice these skills, which will help you when you read novels in the future, for school assignments or just for fun. 1. Describe the development of the characters. 2. Discuss how the plot develops throughout the novel. 3. Describe themes in the novel and trace their development throughout the text. 4. Cite textual evidence to support discussion of the novel. 5. Describe and analyze the role of setting in the novel. Behind the Scenes Ellen Raskin was born in 1928 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Raskin began a career as a writer, illustrator, graphic designer, and fashion designer. Between 1956 and 1970, Raskin illustrated over 20 books including Nancy Larrick s Piping Down the Valleys Wild: Poetry for the Young of All Ages and the first edition of Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time. Ms. Raskin wrote four novels of her own: The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon (I Mean Noel) (1971), Figgs and Phantoms (1974), The Tattooed Potato and Other Clues (1975), and The Westing Game (1978). Ms. Raskin was awarded the 1979 Newbery Medal for The Westing Game. At the time of her death in 1984, Ms. Raskin was married to Dennis Flanagan, the editor of Scientific American. Get This! 1. As you read, you must constantly examine each character s identity and try to figure out if he/she is really who he presents himself as. Especially think about and try to determine the fourth identity of Sam Westing himself. 2. The motif of chess appears repeatedly throughout the novel. Notice how the author uses this game to echo the novels events and consider why she chose to do. 3. The Westing Game possesses numerous symbols. Be sure to notice and try to figure out the symbolism of Angela s engagement ring and the will.
The Plot Ellen Raskin s The Westing Game follows the inhabitants of an apartment building as they try to figure out who murdered Sam Westing. As you read, fill in the boxes for each element of the novel s plot.
The Characters Ellen Raskin employs a diverse cast of characters to solve the mystery of Sam Westing s murder. Draw a picture of each character listed. Then describe the importance of each character s role in the box beneath each picture. Turtle Wexler Angela Wexler Theo Theodorakis Sydelle Pulaski Sandy McSouthers Dr. Denton Deere
The Setting Sunset Towers, a new apartment building built by Sam Westing, serves as the main setting for the novel. In addition to being the location where most of the characters live, the building can also be viewed as a game board created by Sam Westing just for his purposes. Use the spaces below to describe the setting in the mystery. In the first column, type or write direct quotes from the novel phrases and sentences that are used to show what the setting is like throughout the book. In the second column, explain in your own words what the author is trying to convey. An example has been completed for you. Direct Quote Related to Setting Sunset Towers faced east and had no towers. This glittery, glassy apartment house stood alone on the Lake Michigan shore five stories high. Five empty stories high (Chapter 1) Your Explanation Sunset Towers begins to be lived in when the mystery begins. This reinforces that the building was created just for this game.
Tracking Themes What message is Ellen Raskin trying to communicate in The Westing Game? The main themes in The Westing Game involve appearances, identity, and wealth. See if you can identify and analyze those themes in the drama. Step 1: What parts of the plot seem related to a possible theme in the novel? (Think about the main conflict and how it gets resolved or worked out.) Step 2: Which characters seem related to a possible theme? Which characters change, and what do those changes suggest about appearances, identity, and wealth? Step 3: How does the author use symbols to hint at the novel s themes? What objects, people, or places stand for something bigger in the story? Step 4: What does the novel s title suggest about the novel s theme? Step 5: Write one or two of the novel s main themes in your own words.
Talk About It What do you think about The Westing Game? Did you notice the motif of games, especially chess, throughout the novel? What does the novel say about families? In the space below each question, write an answer based on your own understanding of the novel. Include some textual evidence or examples that helped you arrive at your answer. 1. The motif of games, especially chess, appears repeatedly throughout the novel. Why do you think the author chose to use this motif and how does it relate to the novel s plot? Textual Evidence: 2. In creating the game, Sam Westing pits two types of families against each other families who are related by blood and the family we choose for ourselves. Discuss some examples of the two types of families seen in the novel and why Westing chooses to take this approach to finding his heir. Textual Evidence:
Represent! Show what you know about The Westing Game and its relevance to your life. Choose one of these projects to complete and share with your teacher, classmates, and others. Choice 1: Point of View The mystery contains a wide cast of characters who each possess their own motivations and characteristics. Select the character who most intrigues you. Create and perform a speech as that character to try to gain more insight into him/her. You may want to focus on a particular event in the novel or perform snippets from several different events. Be sure to write your speech in the form of a play. Choice 2: Mysteries, Mysteries Everywhere In addition to being an entertaining novel, The Westing Game chronicles an exciting mystery, one of which the reader becomes as invested in the outcome as the characters. Think of other films, plays, short stories, or novels that take the form of a mystery. Create a PowerPoint presentation that illustrates some of these mysteries. In your presentation, include objects that symbolize each mystery. Be prepared to explain why you selected each one.
