Thursday, 30 November 2017 Themes Do now: What can you remember about The Sign of four? L.O To understand the main themes in the novel.
Remember You will have to answer a 30 mark question. You get an extract and it will ask you about something specific in that extract, then in the novel as a whole. You must know quotes and understand the whole story! L.O To understand the main themes in the novel.
Take note themes Evil and justice Victorian fear Empire and Imperialism Betrayal and greed Detective fiction Mystery L.O To understand the main themes in the novel.
Evil and justice Murders and crimes Tonga- savage and unfeeling Miss Morstan deserves the treasure Jonathan Small thinks he deserves the treasure as he started it all off L.O To understand the main themes in the novel.
Victorian fear People who are different or foreign Overstepping the social boundaries The dark L.O To understand the main themes in the novel.
Empire and imperialism Threatening foreign characters Indian treasure associated with riches The curious house of Sholto being associated with luxury L.O To understand the main themes in the novel.
Betrayal and greed The constant movement of the treasure Jonathan Small s treatment in the past Death No treasure at the end Major Sholto L.O To understand the main themes in the novel.
Mystery Sign of Four Jonathan Small India- foreign elements Streets of London Solving the case L.O To understand the main themes in the novel.
Detective fiction Sherlock Holmes- all knowing detective Satisfactory ending Structure L.O To understand the main themes in the novel.
You are a wronged woman, and shall have justice. Justice
This savage, distorted creature. Evil
"We earned a living at this time by exhibiting poor Tonga at fairs and other such places as the black cannibal." Empire and Imperialism
The cursed greed which has been my besetting sin through life has withheld from her the treasure Greed
The cursed greed which has been my besetting a sin torn through piece life of has paper, withheld with from the her words, the treasure The sign of the four scrawled across it. Mystery
Characters Sherlock Holmes Dr Watson Jonathan Small Tonga Mary Morstan Athelney Jones You could be asked about a character or a theme. L.O To understand the main themes in the novel.
Sherlock Holmes Give me problems, give me work My mind, he said, rebels at stagnation You really are an automaton- a calculating machine I am the only one in the world
Watson A wondrous subtle thing is love Whoever had lost a treasure, I knew that night I had gained one. Sherlock Holmes was never at fault... "You have attempted to tinge it with romanticism."
Mary Morstan Innocent Modest Calm and composed How is Mary like this? Evidence Analysis She leads a quiet life as a governess. The only adornment that Miss Morstan wears is a small white feather. She is quiet and able to offer "I have led a retired life, and have no friends whom I could appeal to." The adjective 'retired' suggests a gentle and inexperienced character. Whoever had lost a treasure, I knew that night I had gained one. She wore a small turban of the same dull hue, relieved only by a suspicion of white feather in the side. Her modesty is shown in this token gesture of decoration. The white feather could be said to suggest her innocence as well as her modesty. Sherlock Holmes was never at fault... Miss Morstan appeared to have "You comfort have to the attempted housekeeper at to tinge it with romanticism." Pondicherry Lodge. a soothing effect upon her. The housekeeper is hysterical, but Miss Morstan's calm manner has an almost instant effect. Is this Watson's perception or the truth?
Athelney Jones How is Jones like this? Evidence Analysis Pompous The police inspector is dismissive of Holmes' theories about the perpetrator of the crime, and makes a wrongful arrest. "Confirms it in every respect," said the fat detective, pompously. The word 'fat' suggests a somewhat comical appearance and contrasts with Holmes. He speaks 'pompously' implying that he has jumped to his conclusion too quickly. Comic When he 'discovers' the trapdoor to the roof at Mr Athelney Jones is presented as a Pondicherry Lodge, he is somewhat comic character. His quickly 'crestfallen' when blustering nature is in contrast with the Holmes explains that he composure of Sherlock Holmes. was the one who opened it. Holmes responds to Jones' attempts to find the murderer with a calm manner that makes the police detective appear foolish and slowwitted. Apologetic When it turns out that Thaddeus His expression was Sholto has a firm alibi for the night of downcast, and his Bartholomew's murder, Jones returns bearing meek and even self-effacingly to ask for Holmes' help. apologetic. This contrasts to earlier meetings with Jones, when he has appeared as overly confident and self-assured. Common The police are presented as being of a lower social status in this novel. "There is nothing more unaesthetic than a policeman." Thaddeus shows a snobbish attitude to the police and Holmes is also dismissive of their intellectual capabilities.
