2 A Note from the Education Director Dear Parents and Young Actors, Get yourself ready for another exciting year of Coterie classes! This brochure lays out all The Coterie Acts classes for the entire school year for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Spending the year with The Coterie means that you will collaborate to create theatre with professional theatre artists and fellow students in a fun and safe environment. The Coterie Acts offers creative drama and acting classes for all students to explore their imaginations. These classes encourage students to not only become actors and theatre-makers, but also to build self-esteem and confidence while refining their creativity, active listening, and concentration skills. We work with students to challenge them as they grow, making each class a unique experience for every student. Every season offers something different, asking students to have fun with us year-round. I am very excited for you to join us throughout the year! Amanda Kibler Education Director REGISTER EARLY! Classes have a minimum and maximum. Many classes fill early, so don t delay! 4 Acting Fundamentals: All Acting, All Fun! Grades 5-7 Fall Grades 8-12 Fall This class is a great way for beginners to learn the basics of acting and for seasoned actors to stay sharp! Students will work together as an ensemble as they push each other to make bold, exciting character choices and find honesty in their performances. Using your bodies, voices, and imaginations, this class will develop a strong foundation for all future acting opportunities. This class is suitable for all skill levels as it introduces new students to acting basics and challenges returning students to continue their growth. The Detective Files Grades 5-7 Winter Grades 6-8 Winter Detective stories are always full of intrigue and amazing plot twists. Explore modern and classic scripts such as Sherlock Holmes and solve the world s most difficult cases. Use old detective skills and new as you inhabit a world full of mystery. Audition Lab Grades 5-7 Spring Grades 8-12 Spring Prepare yourself for upcoming school, community, or professional auditions. With the help of a professional teaching artist, students will choose audition monologues that match their age, personality, and individual audition needs. Students will prepare a monologue, develop successful strategies for cold readings, and learn how to create a professional resume. The final class includes a special audition with Jeff Church, Coterie Producing Artistic Director, or a member of The Coterie staff, for youth roles in the upcoming Coterie season. Even though she s really shy, my daughter really enjoyed the week in your summer camp. It was a fantastic introduction to theater performance without it being too intimidating. -Coterie Parent Scene Study: Real Grimm Grades 8-12 Winter The dark and intricate themes found in old Grimm Brothers tales have recently inspired movies and television shows. Now it is your turn to explore and explode the classics! Using the original Grimm Brothers publications as inspiration, this class will create bold characters and fascinating stories that push fairy tales into a whole new light. This class is suitable for all skill levels as it introduces new students to acting basics and challenges returning students to continue their growth. Acting for the Camera Grades 8-12 Spring The Coterie is not a movie studio, but the actors who work on The Coterie stage also do commercials, corporate films, television series, and feature films. Learn to transfer your acting skills to the screen. This course covers analyzing commercial and film copy, acting, taking direction, audition skills, and techniques on how to work with the camera. Sharing: Friends and family are invited to a sharing of scenes and activities on the last day of indicated classes. Scene Study: TARDIS Adventures with Doctor Who Grades 8-12 Fall Jump in the TARDIS to join your favorite Doctor as he travels through space and time. A combination of scripted and improvised scenes will ask students to deepen their acting skills while they immerse themselves in the fast-paced world of Doctor Who. This class is suitable for all skill levels as it introduces new students to acting basics and challenges returning students to continue their growth. Sketch Comedy Grades 8-12 Winter Ready for a new comedy challenge? Then join our sketch comedy troupe as you learn how to create scenes that will leave your audience rolling in the aisles! Students will develop an understanding of the rules of comedy, character, and timing as they have fun working with their fellow comedians. This class offers an opportunity for consideration in The Coterie s Comedy Master class.
