2 l a s I d a Sw Hugo, Charlie ad Jack lived with their parets ext to a large lake. Hugo ad Jack were boys, of course, but Charlie was a girl. Her real ame was Charlotte but the family usually called her Charlie or Lotty because those ames were shorter. The childre lived i the coutryside so there were o ciemas or excitig skate parks ear their home ad there were o cocerts or festivals or restaurats to go to. But the three childre did t mid because they all loved sailig. Their father taught them to swim ad sail whe they were very youg. Hugo ad Charlie were brilliat at sailig. But Jack eeded more practice. There was a islad i the middle of the lake. The childre called it Swa Islad because oce, oly oce, they foud a swa s est there. They ofte sailed across the water to it. Whe they got to the islad, they sometimes made a fire there ad cooked meatballs or sausages. Some ights they stayed o the islad i their father s old tet. They were ever afraid of sailig to the islad by themselves or frighteed of sleepig there aloe o dark, cold ights.

3 While they were havig breakfast last Suday, the childre decided to take a picic to Swa Islad. Hugo carried a backpack that was full of food ad Charlie ad Jack carried everythig else they eeded dow the steps to the water. It s quite widy today, is t it? Jack said. Yes, but the wid s comig from the orth. It s OK, Charlie whispered to Jack. Jack was the yougest ad Charlie liked lookig after him. She did t wat him to worry about aythig or thik that a storm might come. The childre took off their shoes ad threw them ito the boat. The they carefully put the backpack o oe of the seats ad pushed the boat ito the water. Whe the water came up to their kees, they jumped i. They pulled up the sails, which soo filled with wid, ad sailed towards the islad. Two bluebirds flew over their heads ad disappeared aroud a corer i the lake. That s uusual, thought Hugo but he did t say aythig. The somethig more uusual happeed. The wid chaged. It bega to come from the west ad suddely got very strog. Hugo said, Sit o the other side of the boat. Quickly! Charlie did, but Jack did t ad he fell ito the water. 5

4 Jack was quite good at swimmig but the waves were gettig higher every miute. Come o, Jack! Swim to the boat! You ca do it! Charlie shouted. Jack tried ad tried, but Hugo could see that his youger brother was gettig tired. He looked at Charlie. I do t wat my sister to be aloe i the boat, he thought. But, but The, HELP! Charlie shouted. Suddely, a huge pirate ship appeared from behid Swa Islad! It was movig really fast. Hugo ad Charlie could oly see two pirates o the ship. Both pirates quickly jumped ito the water ad helped Jack get back ito the childre s sailig boat. All right ow, Jack? they asked. Yes. I m sorry for fallig i! Thak you so much! Jack said. The wid stopped blowig so hard ad chaged agai. It s comig from the east. No! It s comig from the orth agai. Hugo said. The taller pirate looked up at the flag to see ad the shorter pirate put her figer up i the air to feel the wid. Yep! You re right, Hugo, they said together. Hugo wated to ask the two pirates lots of questios. How did they sail their ship to their lake? The sea was 200 kilometres away! Where were the other pirates? The ship was too big for oly two people to sail. Ad how did the pirates kow their ames? But Hugo kept quiet. 6

5 We re goig to have a picic o Swa Islad, Charlie said. Would you like to eat with us? Sure, Charlie, the shorter pirate said. We ca brig our food, as well. The pirates food was differet from the childre s. They brought fat black olives ad gree limes ad dry biscuits, but everyoe ejoyed the picic. While they were eatig, the pirates taught them pirate sogs ad told the childre some scary pirate stories. They all laughed ad laughed. Whe it bega to get dark, the taller pirate stood up, smiled (some of his teeth were missig!) ad said, We have to go ow. But remember whe the wid suddely chages ad comes from the west, strage thigs ca happe. The pirates got ito the childre s boat ad because there was o wid ow, Hugo started the egie. He took the pirates back to their ship, the retured to the islad. Quick, he said to Charlie ad Jack. Let s ru up to the top of the hill to see where they go! The three childre ra up ad up the path through the trees to get to the top of Swa Islad hill. The they looked orth, south, east ad west but they could t see the ship aywhere. It disappeared, Charlie said. Yes. Ad I did t ask my questios Hugo said. Perhaps oe day, we ca have some more fu with them, Jack said. Perhaps, Hugo said quietly. Ad each time after that day, whe Hugo sailed to Swa Islad, as a boy AND as a ma, he hoped to meet the pirates agai. But he ever did. 7
