The REAL Problem With Artificial Intelligence: A Lack of Understanding Dr. Frank Jones January 2016

Outline of This Talk Beginning (YOU ARE HERE) Middle End

Definition: Artificial Intelligence: The branch of computer science that deals with writing computer programs that can solve problems creatively (Word Web) Many Sub-fields Natural Language Processing Image Recognition Artificial Neural Networks Evolutionary Algorithms Etc.

We've Been Busy May 11th, 1997 February 2011 IBM's Super Computer Deep Blue defeat's the reigning world chess champion Garry Kasparov with 2 wins, 1 loss and 3 draws. The machine could compute 200 million potential moves per second. [1,2,3] IBM's Super Computer Watson defeat's two Jeopardy champions. The system contained 2880 processing cores and about a million books worth of information.[4] June 8th, 2014 Chatbot Eugene Goostman passes the Turing Test. Convincing 33% of panel judges that it was 13 year old boy from Ukraine (non-native English speaker) [5]

And the people rejoiced...

and panicked... The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race. (Stephen Hawking) [6]...artificial intelligence could drive mankind into extinction... [7]... we've reached a point in our civilization where its not crazy to think our inventions might overtake us for dominance on the planet. [8]

What is Meant By An Artificial Intelligence? Artificial Intelligence Narrow AI General Purpose or Strong AI Analogous problems exist in other fields: Evolution: Micro-Evolution Macro-Evolution

What We Mean... True but manufactured general purpose intelligence Synthetic Intelligence Intelligence: The ability to comprehend; to understand and profit from experience (WordWeb) A machine with the ability to choose/act independently

And tongue cannot speak the words which he prayed, neither can be written by man the words which he prayed...and their hears were open and they did understand in their hearts the words which he prayed so great and marvelous were the words which he prayed that they cannot be written, neither can they be uttered by man.
