4 Course syllabus Aims: to provide an introduction to ideas about the connections between text and image to introduce and examine the cultural context of medieval texts and images associated with the Arthurian story to explore the treatment of the Arthurian story within the culture of the 19th century in text and images Content: The stories of King Arthur and his knights have long appealed to the imagination. This course follows the development of Arthurian literature from its beginnings in the Middle Ages through to its treatment in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We shall explore the manner in which authors often responded to the Arthurian story in ways dependent on the events and culture of their own times. We shall follow a roughly chronological progress, beginning with an introduction to King Arthur in his historical and literary context and theories of text and image. We shall then look more closely at what is arguably the most complex and disturbing of all medieval treatments of the Arthurian story, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the illustration of its manuscript Cotton Nero A.x. This will be followed by an in-depth look at selections of Malory s Morte Darthur and its illustrations, and this in turn will be complemented by Tennyson s and the Pre-Raphaelites nineteenth-century re-imagining of the Arthurian world. We shall conclude by exploring Mark Twain s A Connecticut Yankee in the Court of King Arthur and Arthurian text and image in the 20th century, with particular reference to women writers of Arthurian fiction. Presentation of the course: Teaching and learning will take place through a series of methods including exposition and mini lectures illustrated by powerpoint, handouts and books, discussion sessions in class, and continual encouragement to ask questions. Outcomes: As a result of the course, within the constraints of the time available, students should be able to: identify and formulate theories of text and image assess the importance of the Arthurian story to the literature of the Middle Ages and the 19th century interpret the cultural significance of the Arthurian story through a study of the imagery accrued by the stories
