Monster Math Common Core Word Problems for Second Grade 2.OA.1 1

I can use drawings and equations to solve a word problem using addition and subtraction with unknowns in all positions. 2.OA.1 Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem. 2

I can use drawings and equations to solve a word problem using addition and subtraction with unknowns in all positions. Result Unknown = when you need to find the last number in an equation = x or 9-5 = x How to: Add or subtract in the order the equation reads. When writing your own equation, you will need to decide if you are adding or subtracting. 3

I can use drawings and equations to solve a word problem using addition and subtraction with unknowns in all positions. Change Unknown = when you need to find the middle number in an equation. 4 + x = 9 or 9 - x = 5 How to: When the change is unknown, you will need to subtract the two known numbers to find the unknown. 4

I can use drawings and equations to solve a word problem using addition and subtraction with unknowns in all positions. For example: Some apples were on the table. I ate two apples. Then there were three apples. How many apples were on the table before I ate? x 2 = 3 or Some bunnies were sitting on the grass. Three more bunnies hopped there. Then there were five bunnies. How many bunnies were on the grass before? x + 3 = 5 Start Unknown = when you need to find the first number in an equation. x + 5 = 9 or x - 6 = 10 How to when it is addition: When you add to an unknown number, subtract the two known numbers to find the unknown. How to when it is subtraction: When you subtract from an unknown number, add the two known numbers to find the unknown. 5

Both Addends Unknown = when you need to find all the ways to make a number* Gill has five books. How many can he put in his red box and how many in his blue box? Write ALL the ways to write the equations. 5 = = = = 4 reveal = 2 answer = 3 here + 2 * use for numbers equal or less than 10 to understand the decomposition of numbers 6

Bubblegum gave 5 pieces of gum to Ed. She has 8 pieces of gum left. How many did she have to begin? Draw a picture of your equation. If so, write all the ways equations that are possible. *You can move the directions to have your students write the equation first, then draw, or vice versa. 7

Fuzzy ate 6 spiders on Monday. She ate 4 spiders on Tuesday. She ate 5 bats on Wednesday. How many bats did she eat in the three days? If so, write them all the equations that are possible. Draw a picture of the word problem and the answer. 8

Lookeelou saw 12 bats. Then he saw 6 spiders. How many more bats than spiders did he see? Draw a picture of your equation. If so, write all the ways equations that are possible. 9

Squish ate 6 bats on Monday and 4 bats on Tuesday. He ate some bats on Wednesday. He ate 18 bats in those three days. How many bats did he eat on Wednesday? If so, write them all the equations that are possible. Draw a picture of the word problem and the answer. 10

Sam had some masks. He gave 6 to Sally. Now Sam has 8. How many masks did Sam have to begin? If so, write all the ways equations that are possible. *You can move the directions to have your students write the equation first, then draw, or vice versa. 11

Sally had 15 cookies. She gave some to Max. Now Sally has 7 cookies. How many cookies did she give to Max? If so, write them all the equations that are possible. Draw a picture of the word problem and the answer. 12

Bob took 4 ghosts to jail on Monday. On Tuesday he took 3 more to jail. Then on Wednesday he took 5 ghosts in. How many ghosts did Bob take to jail in all? If so, write them all the equations that are possible. 13

Kermit had 5 boxes of candy. Then he got some more candy at the store. Now he has 13 boxes of candy. How many did he get at the store? If so, write them all the equations that are possible. 14

Max had 8 pumpkins. If he put the pumpkins into two boxes, what are all the ways he could place them? What kind of unknowns do you have? Write ALL the possible equations. 15

Ed played tag for 5 minutes at recess on Monday and Tuesday. He jumped rope for 2 minutes on Wednesday. How many more minutes did he play tag then jump rope? If so, write them all the equations that are possible. 16

Nellie had 14 lollipops. She gave 4 to Gill and 3 to Fuzzy. How many lollipops does she have now? Draw a picture of your equation. If so, write all the ways equations that are possible. 17

Ray had 8 apples. He picked some more. Now he has 15 apples. How many apples did Ray pick? If so, write them all the equations that are possible. 18

Mark had 8 spiders. He gave 2 to Bob. Then Ray gave Mark 3 more spiders. How many spiders does Mark have now? What kind of unknowns do you have? If so, write them all the equations that are possible. Draw a picture of the word problem and the answer. 19

Snag saw 5 bats. Then he saw 6 spiders. How many animals did he see? Draw a picture of your equation. If so, write all the ways equations that are possible. 20

Jack has candy. He gives 7 to Sam and 5 to Max. Now he has 8. How many did Jack have to begin? If so, write them all the equations that are possible. 21

Sherlock found 5 candy bars on Monday. He gave 3 to Fuzzy. Then Ed gave him 4 candy bars. How many candy bars does Sherlock have now? What kind of unknowns do you have? If so, write them all the equations that are possible. 22
