Das Leben der Gudrun Ensslin. (Poetry and violence. The life of Gudrun Ensslin) Biography/History 320 pp (with illustrations) Gudrun Ensslin Who was she? And what shaped her to become a German far-left militant leader? Gudrun Ensslin was more than just part of the leadership of the German Red Army Faction: she was a literarily highly educated person. By describing comprehensively Ensslins political as well as her intellectual development author Ingeborg Gleichauf shows how radicalism and propensity to violence could rise in post-war intellectual middle class. This book focuses on an extreme woman and her extreme journey through life. The author presents the facts from an unprejudiced viewpoint and dispenses with established clichés that used to portray her as a product of provincial narrow-mindedness. Ingeborg Gleichauf, on the contrary, shows a very versatile and talented personality of contemporary history. The author describes the conditions that favoured a propensity of violence. But these were not the only aspects that shaped her life. Her intensive writing and her passion for literature had a central impact on her world view. The author traces all of Ensslin s life stages and her relations. Combining narration with analysis, the author conveys to the reader a real sense for this dificult and multifaceted person, who wanted to bring a radical change to society. But even for sustainable palm oil and biofuel, the Indonesian rain forest is cleared and indigenous people are displaced. The bestselling author warns against the uncontrolled power of artificial intelligence Das Ende der Demokratie. Wie künstliche Intelligenz die Politik übernimmt und uns entmündigt. (The End of Democracy. How Artificial Intelligence Is Taking Over Politics and Disempowering Us) Current Affairs 512 pp Is artificial intelligence going to dominate economy as well as everyday life in the future, tending to replace man? Are intelligent machines going to make politics? Yvonne Hofstetter sees strong indications for these developments. However, both politics and economy seem reluctant. Decisions are determined rather by anxious reaction than by an active way of shaping. Whoever behaves like this, has not reached the digital age. In fact, giants of the internet like Google and Co. become more and more the masters in the digital house being up and running highly visible in all branches of society. They dispose of huge masses of data; big data accumulates the ways in which we interact, artificial intelligences analyse our intentions. And because they know us, they are able to manipulate us, to imperceptibly oppose their will on us. So, are freedom and democracy at risk of being ground down between policy failures and big data? Hofstetter advises against just demonising big data, and then carrying on as before. She shows instead, on the basis of two highly explosive scenarios the euro crises and the issue of refugees how the amounts of data and intelligent machines can be used to cope with urgent political tasks. They Know Everything, Hofstetter s book on data collection and algorithmic systems, was listed in the top 15 of SPIEGEL bestseller list one week after publication date. It was shortlisted for Deutscher Wirtschaftsbuchpreis and NDR Sachbuchpreis. It has sold more than 25,000 copies to date. Published books: Sie wissen alles (2014) Das Ende der Demokratie (2016) 40

Die verrückte Welt der Paralleluniversen (The Crazy Theory of Parallel Universes) Popular Noniction 272 pp A ground-breaking idea has seized the scientific world. Could our universe be just one of many? Could we be living in many different worlds at the same time, as replicas of ourselves? This multiple universe theory is starting to take root in modern cosmology. Britain s Astronomer Royal, Sir Martin Rees, would bet his dog s life on its validity. The cosmologist Andrei Linde from Stanford University would bet his own life. This book reveals the latest developments of this scientific revolution. Tobias Hürter and Max Rauner spoke to Nobel laureates, papal astronomers, philosophers and the most prominent defenders and opponents of this new world theory. Germany: Klett-Cotta»Theater revolts out of habit against the aesthetic preferences of a bourgeoisie that no longer exists. The theatre is stuck in a niche that nobody inds interest in. In a desperate attempt it drags refugees onto the stage or forces the audience to join in. Thus it decays from cabaret to kindergarten. In addition to that it is enormously unpractical: dependant on subvention, but still expensive, intently elitist (only more hypocritical than before), uncomfortable you can t eat popcorn or go to the toilet. There are many reasons to hate the theatre. You even owe it the hate especially, when you love it. We omit vital information while thinking, we make irrational mistakes. This is exactly what makes us creative, flexible, and efficient. But our self-perception claims the complete opposite: We like to think of ourselves as in the era of rationality and enlightenment and we avoid mistakes like the plague. Jürgen Schaefer holds up the mirror to our intolerance of errors, searching for reasons and consequences of this trend. With the newest research data on mistakes, he illuminates the fascinating project of evolution which consists of trial and error. He shows us how everything living has a desire to experiment, because without mistakes there is no diversity, without aberration no balance, without falsity no courage for innovation. He tried not to ly for 40 days. He tried over 50 different diets. He tested every world religion to their degree of redemption. He stuck strictly to German law, which led to the consequence that, unfortunately, he had to report his wife to the police. That is why she chose the subject of his next self-experiment.»find out how it s like to be a woman«, she demanded. No sooner said than done. With the help of hormones and electroshocks Schmieder simulated menstruation and labor pains. He underwent a full body waxing. He let some women chat him up in a bar. He went to a beauty farm. He stuffed himself into too tight clothes, to be admired at a party, where he gossips about the other guests. He went bargain hunting on the internet. He cleaned up the apartment, according to female standards. He practised multi-tasking. And, to top it all off, he planed a wedding, as a woman would do (testing out his new skills in multitasking of course). In doing so Schmieder learned a lot about women. Nothing shapes our sentiments as much as the emotions of others. Humans have the astounding ability to read other s emotions and to put themselves into the other s position and to be infected by it. Ulrich Schnabel shows how we navigate through the day and describes how we are torn between our desire for lasting relationships and our longing for independence. He unmasks the emotional snares of our consumer society, shows the great pains of modern love and talks about those emotional workers who burn themselves out in their social jobs.
