2 Name: The great white shark is one of the most recognizable sharks in the world. The only shark larger than a great white is the whale shark. Great white sharks have been found in each of the world's oceans. Great White Sharks by Erin Ryan Even though they have been spotted in waters as shallow as three feet (one meter) deep, these sharks spend most of their time in deep coastal waters. The great white shark is related to the prehistoric Megalodon shark, which grew to over sixty-five feet (20 meters). The largest great white sharks found have been over twenty feet (six meters) long. Like the Megalodon, great whites have huge triangle shaped teeth that are serrated, like knives. The teeth of great white sharks are up to three inches (seven centimeters) long and as they break off or wear out, new teeth grow in to replace them. One of the most noticeable features of the great white is the dorsal fin which rises out of the water when a great white swims near the surface of the ocean. The fins on either side of the shark are called pectoral fins and they help to direct the shark closer to the surface or deeper into sea. The shark s tail is powered by very strong muscles. It sweeps the tail side to side and can reach speeds of up to fifteen miles per hour (twenty-four kilometers per hour). and can have sudden powerful bursts of speed up to twenty-five miles per hour (forty kilometers per hour). The great white shark has special receptors in its snout, or nose, that help it feel electrical pulses from prey. They also have sensors in their skin that help them to feel vibrations in the water. The main diet of this carnivore is large fish, squid, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and turtles. When a great white shark is feeding, it can roll back its eyes to protect them. Because great white sharks are so dangerous, little is known about them in the wild. Great white sharks have never been kept in captivity for longer than seven months, so scientists are unsure how long they live. It is believed that their life span is almost thirty years. The great white shark is the most feared predator of the ocean, by people and by sea creatures alike! Super Teacher Worksheets -

4 Counting Money Matching Game (Challenging Version) This game is played like the memory match card game that many children are familiar with. It is designed to reinforce their understanding of counting money. Materials: Coin cards and number cards (pages 2-4) Set up: Copy the cards on card stock so students cannot see through the paper. Cut the cards on the dotted lines. Laminate the cards, if desired. How to Play: Lay all of the cards upside-down on the table and mix them up. Players will try to flip pairs of matching cards. example: The card matches the card. Player 1 flips two cards. If the cards match, he or she gets to keep both cards. If the cards do not match, then the cards are flipped back upside-down. Then, player 2 gets a turn to try to flip matching cards. Players alternate until all cards have been removed from the game. When the game is over, the player with the most cards is the winner.

16 Name: Heroes in the Sky by Kelly Hashway Jason picked up a model helicopter on his grandfather s desk. This is cool, he said, spinning the blade on top. His grandfather walked over and took the helicopter in his hand. He looked at it for a moment without saying a word. It s a Huey. I flew one just like it in Vietnam. You mean the Vietnam War, Grandpa Bill? Jason asked. He knew his grandfather had fought in the war, but he never liked to talk about it. Grandpa Bill nodded. The Huey was equipped with rockets and machine guns. Some of them even had grenade launchers. Jason s first instinct was to say that was cool. A helicopter with all those weapons would be amazing. But then he realized Grandpa Bill was a war veteran. The reason why he didn t like to talk about the war was because it had been frightening. Were you scared? Jason asked, looking into Grandpa Bill s eyes. Of course. But I had a very important job in the Huey. I had to escort troops for the Army and Marines. The Huey became a symbol of the U.S. forces in Vietnam, Grandpa Bill said, his voice quiet. Did you help wounded soldiers, too? Jason asked. He Super Teacher Worksheets -

17 remembered his history teacher saying something about the helicopters airlifting casualties to medical facilities. Grandpa Bill nodded again, but then he smiled. Jason had never seen him look so proud. Vietnam was the first real helicopter war. By the end of the war, the Army had an Air Force of its own. Thanks to the Huey and brave people like you who flew them, Jason said. You helped change history, Grandpa. You re a real hero. Grandpa Bill smiled. I wouldn t call myself a hero. I did what so many others did at that time. Jason reached for the model Huey. I d really like it if you d tell me more about your time in Vietnam. And not just about the helicopters or the places you ve been to. I want to know what it was like to fight for your country, to risk your life to save others. I want to know what it feels like to be a hero. Grandpa Bill shook his head. There you go, using that word again. Because you are a hero, Grandpa. Grandpa Bill wiped a tear from his eye and began telling Jason about his time in Vietnam. About the the Author Kelly Hashway Kelly Hashway's latest book, May the Best Dog Win, is now available! 23 Name: Leaving Her Mark A True Story, Retold by Liana Mahoney Wherever she goes, Molly leaves her mark. Without saying a word, she speaks to people with her kind eyes. Even when she walks away, she leaves an impression. Molly s mark is a smile, stamped into the ground by the horseshoe at the bottom of her false leg. A few years ago, Molly, a pony, was badly attacked by a dog. The dog bit all four of Molly s legs and left large gashes in her face. Molly s owner, Kaye Harris, took her to an animal hospital. Veterinarians there were able to save Molly s life, but soon one of her legs became very infected. The only way to save her life was to amputate, or remove, the infected leg. At first, veterinarians thought Molly would have to be euthanized (YOO-thin-ized), or put to sleep. But Molly changed their minds. This pony, doctors noticed, shifted her weight, and rested her good leg from time to time. Doctors knew that Molly had amazing intelligence, and that she wanted to live. Several veterinarians operated on Molly, and amputated her infected leg. A false leg, called a prosthesis (pros-thee-sis) was made for her. Molly s prosthesis was a hollow cast with a pole at the bottom for balance. Doctors gave Molly a special horseshoe at the bottom of her prosthesis. This horseshoe had a stamp of a smile face in it! After the operation, Molly walked around on all four legs, as if nothing had ever happened to her! Now, with every step she takes, she stamps a smile in the dirt. But she leaves her mark in other ways, too. Kaye Harris took Molly to the prosthesis center. There were children there who, like Molly, had artificial limbs. They were amazed to see a pony with a prosthetic leg. Molly made them smile and gave them hope. Soon, Molly began to visit schools, nursing homes, army bases, and hospitals. A book was even written about Molly! Molly has become a symbol of hope for people of all ages. Her story leaves a smile on people s faces, just as clearly as her horseshoe leaves a mark in the sand.
