1 LA1. Great Literature for the Early Middle Schooler 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week (Middle School) This course is intended to ease the student into the transition from elementary school English classes to Middle school literature classes by incorporating great stories and literature and yet while still incorporating the elements of the English language: vocabulary building, grammar and writing. In addition to reading selections in the textbooks, students will pick books to read as a group throughout the year. Textbooks will be provided on loan by the school Classic Roots. Workbook will be purchased by the Students. TEXTBOOKS: Prentice Hall, Endless Voices, Timeless Themes, Copper Edition. Holt Elements of Language, Grade 6, Vocabulary from Classical Roots LA2. The Secret Life of Words 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week (Middle and High School) There is an art and a science to grammar and composition. This class will explore language from the inside out, covering grammar parts of speech, parts of the sentence, grammar rules, and word choice as well as vocabulary Latin and Greek roots, connotations, and the stories behind the idioms. We will read essays to study narrative style, write and revise responses, and draw elaborate sentence diagrams across vast swaths of space Canton Road, Marietta, GA Page 1

2 Class material will include Woe Is I, Patricia T. O Conner. LA3. The Crazies : Middle School Lit 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week. The title of this class comes from the reading material somehow, the most interesting short stories, poems, and novels deal in some degree with questionable characters. We will be reading short stories, poems, novels and excerpts, and plays. We will address the genres and conventions as we analyze the writers styles and literary techniques. Authors include Edgar Allan Poe, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Lewis Carroll, Virginia Woolf, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, Maya Angelou, Ray Bradbury, Henry James, Harper Lee, and others. We will write essays in response to these texts and the issues they raise, focusing on the necessary ingredients for organization, insight, and evidence. Novels: To Kill a Mockingbird, Turn of the Screw, The Giver LA4. Of All Persuasions 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week. (Composition, 8th grade and above) Robin Williams s character in Dead Poet s Society declares that language was developed for one reason: To woo women! With just a bit more restraint, I would argue that all of our communication is aimed at some sort of persuasion even when it comes in the form of exposition, narrative, or analysis Canton Road, Marietta, GA Page 2

3 This course will teach composition as argument. We will study forms of persuasion, such as advertisements, stories, newspaper articles, political speeches, and other media, in order to evaluate their elements, techniques, and logical validity. We will study fallacies, emotional appeals, and loaded language. We will also write essays that focus on thesis development, organization, claim, data, warrant, and rhetoric as we practice and responding to these techniques. These essays will employ narrative, expository, persuasive, and research formats as different methods of persuasion. LA5. The Book in Pill Form: Poetry! 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week (Poetry, 8th grade and above) If you can analyze a poem, you can analyze anything! This course will focus on getting the most out of the least, unpacking meaning from single words, teasing out connotation and suggestion from the poem s rhythm, rhyme, form, and diction. We will work from the most basic ingredients of the poem to its larger structures, social context, and influences. We will read a variety of types of poems, ranging from Shakespearean sonnets, to free verse, to contemporary songs. The class will include class discussion, individual student presentations, weekly response papers, as well as two longer essays: one explication and one persuasive essay Canton Road, Marietta, GA Page 3

The American Literature Experience 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week (Grades 10th and above) Over the course of the year, we will study American writings from colonial period to the late twentieth century. We will examine the historical and philosophical contexts, as well as authors biographies, influences, and popular perceptions. In the process, we will address genre and style: nonfiction, poetry, drama, short fiction, and novel. Authors will include Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and others. We will write weekly response papers and two formal analytical papers, including a research paper, with specific attention paid to the elements of argument. Novels: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Huckleberry Finn. Fall semester: In Our Time, As I Lay Dying, Fahrenheit 451. LA6. British Literature: 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week (Grades 10th and above) Over the course of the year, we will study British writings from its Anglo-Saxon beginnings to the late twentieth century. We will write weekly response papers and two formal analytical papers, including a research paper, with specific attention paid to the elements of argument. Readings will include Beowulf, Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Jonathan Swift, the Romantics, Charlotte Bronte, Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, Alan Moore. Full texts: Canterbury Tales, MacBeth, Jane Eyre. Fall Semester: Great Expectations, Lord of the Flies, The Watchmen. LA7. Science Fiction Film: The Problem with Metachlorians 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week (High School Elective) This class takes as its starting point the horrible blunder of the metachlorians introduced in Star Wars IV, which fixed a concrete source for the heroism, skill, and mysterious power of those using the force. These microbial deities illustrate the conflict in science fiction between concrete tools and abstract principles, and offer the moral that science can offer answers, but the answers may be ugly. This class takes as its focus the role in science fiction of technology and everyday things, and of innovations that seem likely to become commonplace, the needs they address, and the problems they create. We will recreate the cultural contexts for utopic and dystopic science fiction of the past century, examining the inventions central and tangential to their fictional societies Canton Road, Marietta, GA Page 5

6 and thereby uncovering the central and tangential social anxieties. In doing so, we will address the larger themes in science fiction: the alien, the disaster, the monster, robots, time travel, the mind. We will view films outside of class each week, and participate in class discussion, response papers, student presentations, and a formal paper. LA8. Remakes and Revisions: One Hundred Years of Science Fiction in Film 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week (High School Elective) Everyone seems to agree that Godzilla in the original 1954 Japanese film represents the nuclear bomb, but what about when he meets King Kong in a later movie? What does Mothra represent? What does he mean when he appears in the American 1998 remake, or the children's cartoons of the 1970s? And, by the way, why does Wharf on Star Trek: The Next Generation look so different from the Klingons in the original series? This class will consider each remake (or "revision," which allows greater latitude) and original as 1) a historical document, responding to social crises as well as influencing popular culture and sentiment; 2) a marketed product, with productions costs, craftsmen, copyrights, and raw materials; 3) a literary creation, with invented scenes and props, as well as an audience; and 4) a technical creation, including the film's effects and theater venues as artifacts in themselves. The remake is an especially useful way to examine the film as an object, as it self-consciously manipulated its predecessor. We will study the original film to uncover its meanings and techniques; then we will examine the ways that their remakes and revisions, sometimes many decades later, 2625 Canton Road, Marietta, GA Page 6

7 transpose these meanings to answer newer social needs. In the process, we will address the tools of the fictional societies created, the role of special effects in the stories, and the cultural imprint that the film's fictional world has imposed on our everyday lives. We will view films outside of class each week, and participate in class discussion, response papers, student presentations, and a formal paper. LA9. American Studies and Popular Culture 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week (High School Social Science/Literature) This course will survey American culture and society from early European settlement until It begins with the idea that personal and social meaning derives from both the philosophies and official statements made about ourselves (personally, and as a nation), and from our everyday experiences with work, leisure, shopping, viewing, and maintaining our environments. We will address the former, in part, through the literary works: fiction, poetry, dramas, and essays. We will also study the material culture, history, art, and popular culture, and even trivia of the time. In this way, we can study "America" not only through how people explained themselves to each other, but also through what they revealed about themselves in their everyday activities and concerns Canton Road, Marietta, GA Page 7

8 LA10. 19th Century Russian Short Fiction 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week (Middle and High School Literature) This class will introduce students to the amazing world of Russian fiction of the 19th century. We will read and discuss some of the most celebrated short masterpieces by major Russian writers, including Pushkin and Lermontov, during the Fall Semester of 2015 and Gogol and Chekhov in the Spring Semester of The class will focus on the analysis of the text read at home. It will encompass Russian culture, including biographical and historical information. The instructor will draw upon her Russian background to provide the students with a unique opportunity to appreciate these masterpieces in-depth. Classes will consist of a lecture by the teacher, students presentation, and group discussion. Required texts are free publicly accessible online: The Shot by Alexander Pushkin, The Queen of Spades by Alexander Pushkin, A Hero of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov, The Mantel and Other Stories by Nikolai Gogol, Stories by Anton Chekhov LA11. SAT/ACT Prep 1 ½ hour classroom instruction per week (9th grade and higher) The SAT tests not only for knowledge and expertise, but also for cunning. This class will address both subject matter and strategies. The Writing section focuses on 14 specific grammar rules, as well as style, word usage, redundancy, and punctuation. We will also address how to craft an essay that satisfies the test's requirements in the short amount of time provided. The Reading 2625 Canton Road, Marietta, GA Page 8

9 section includes vocabulary and comprehension. We will work on decoding vocabulary words using Latin and Greek roots, and we will discuss ways to decipher tone and intent in the passage reading.
