2 ABOUT THE BOOK My real name, no one remembers. The truth about that summer, no one else knows. In the summer of 1862, a group of young artists led by the passionate and talented Edward Radcliffe descends upon Birchwood Manor on the banks of the Upper Thames. Their plan: to spend a secluded summer month in a haze of inspiration and creativity. But by the time their stay is over, one woman has been shot dead while another has disappeared; a priceless heirloom is missing; and Edward Radcliffe s life is in ruins. Over one hundred and fifty years later, Elodie Winslow, a young archivist in London, uncovers a leather satchel containing two seemingly unrelated items: a sepia photograph of an arrestinglooking woman in Victorian clothing, and an artist s sketchbook containing the drawing of a twin-gabled house on the bend of a river. Why does Birchwood Manor feel so familiar to Elodie? And who is the beautiful woman in the photograph? Will she ever give up her secrets? Told by multiple voices across time, The Clockmaker s Daughter is a story of murder, mystery and thievery, of art, love and loss. And flowing through its pages like a river is the voice of a woman who stands outside time, whose name has been forgotten by history, but who has watched it all unfold: Birdie Bell, the clockmaker s daughter. Watch Kate Morton discuss The Clockmaker s Daughter For additional behind-the-scenes information about The Clockmaker s Daughter, visit page 2
3 ABOUT THE AUTHOR KATE MORTON was born in South Australia and grew up in the mountains of south-east Queensland. She has degrees in dramatic art and English literature and lives now with her husband and three young sons in London and Australia. The Shifting Fog, published internationally as The House at Riverton, The Forgotten Garden, The Distant Hours, The Secret Keeper and The Lake House have all been number one bestsellers around the world. You can find more information about Kate Morton and her books at katemorton.com or and wvin Parson ALSO BY KATE MORTON The Shifting Fog (published internationally as The House at Riverton) The Forgotten Garden The Distant Hours The Secret Keeper The Lake House page 3
4 A NOTE FROM KATE MORTON S PUBLISHER Offering publication to Kate Morton for her debut novel The Shifting Fog (published internationally as The House at Riverton) back in 2005 was definitely one of my best publishing decisions. Here was a manuscript full of layers and nuances, of secrets and mysteries, with fascinating, beautifully evoked characters and a vividly imagined country home at its centre. It was everything I loved to read about. And here was a young writer who fully inhabited her writing pouring everything she loved into her narrative. I couldn t wait to see what Kate would write next. The Forgotten Garden was the second book I will always remember that little girl, barely four years old, sitting on top of a child s suitcase in the darkening evening on the docks in Brisbane. From there I fell in love with the sisters of Milderhurst in The Distant Hours as my spine tingled watching the Mud Man s slow creeping ascent of the tower wall to the open window! And the amazing and unpredictable twists within The Secret Keeper delighted me just as later millions of readers were left gasping I didn t find anyone who guessed what was to happen in that novel. In The Lake House, I wept at the terrible choices that had to be made for love and protection, and was entranced by both the glorious heyday and the ruins of Loeanneth. Kate s sixth novel, The Clockmaker s Daughter, is now in front of me on my desk. Recently published, I am thrilled at the reception it is already receiving. As much as I still love and engage with every one of Kate Morton s novels, this, I believe, is her best. Full of passion, life, betrayal, secrets, lies and wisdom, set around and within the mysterious Birchwood Manor in rural England, Birdie Bell is an exceptional guide. ANNETTE BARLOW CONVERSATION STARTERS In each of Kate Morton s novels, a country home is featured. While the houses vary in size and situation, Kate s characters inhabit and care for these homes, which sometimes represent a safe place, a noisy happy family retreat or a scene of historical secrets and mystery. How do you think Birchwood Manor is represented in The Clockmaker s Daughter? From a young age, Birchwood Manor represents a very special place for Edward, a safe haven, but in the end, the house is unable to cast its protection over some of those in it. At the end of the summer, a grief-stricken Edwardd closes up Birchwood Manor and leaves never to return. Discuss. Creativity is important to many of the characters in The Clockmaker s Daughter; for example, the painter Edward, the writers Leonard and Juliet, the archivist Elodie, even the spirit of Elodie s deceased mother, the world-renowned cellist. What s the last creative thing you did? What does your personal creativity bring to you? page 4
5 Would you like to invite any of these characters to a dinner party? What three questions would you like to ask them? Connected stories existing in different time frames are usual in Kate Morton s novels but the complex structure of The Clockmaker s Daughter takes this to new levels. Whose stories in which periods of history engaged you most? Birdie Bell invites the reader to gaze through an unusual and privileged window in The Clockmaker s Daughter. Did you enjoy her perspective? How does Birdie s narration influence the whole book? If the book could be told from someone else s viewpoint, who would it be? The structure of this novel lies in recreating different time periods in London and the Upper Thames area from the early 1860s through various periods to Do you feel that the author was successful in moving the reader through these different historical periods to more contemporary times? Thinking about the stories and histories in The Clockmaker s Daughter, what themes were most interesting to you? What secrets were revealed in The Clockmaker s Daughter? Did you find any particularly shocking? Which ones and why? It s said that creativity can often lead to conflict and instability. Why do you think this is? Is it evident in The Clockmaker s Daughter? Kate Morton s novels have been likened to gothic fairytales replete with fairy lore, ghosts, magic, secrets, mystery and otherworldly elements. In The Clockmaker s Daughter, Edward goes to the woods to raise a ghost and is chased by the Black Dog, and the Night of the Following becomes a pivotal point and a shared moment with his sister Lucy. The magical Eldritch children and the site on which they live, Birchwood Manor, also feature as part of common folklore. What do readers find so fascinating about dark fairytales? Does the light in the attic window of Birchwood Manor really exist or is it a figment of everyone s imagination? Apart from Birdie Bell, who was your favourite character and why? Birdie only makes herself known to Ada and Tip. Why do you think this is? And why doesn t she appear to Edward, who is grief-stricken, going mad, and who she passionately loves? The Clockmaker s Daughter is a story of time and the intersection of lives across time. Birdie Bell is a clockmaker s daughter and we see the passage of time through her eyes. But The Clockmaker s Daughter is also a story of timelessness. Discuss. page 5
