1 1. Atomic bombs should never have been used because of the terrible long term impacts they left behind. According to Curtis LeMay, Around 90,000 died from burns, radiation and related diseases by the end of 1945 (Doc. C). Almost 100,000 people died from radiation and other problems. The impact of the bomb was felt for months after it fell. People did not just die immediately, they continued to suffer. Japanese civilians had to keep reliving the horrors. It was not nice to murder so many innocent people. When nearly 100,000 civilians who did not fight in the war die all at once, the U.S. should question if they did the right thing. 1. 2 2. Atomic bombs should never have been used because of the terrible long term impacts they left behind. World War II historian, Robert Ferrell, writes about how Truman, wanted the Soviets to know (Doc. C) about the atomic bomb. If Truman s attempt to scare Stalin backfires, then there is a good chance the Soviets will try to make their own atomic weapons. This could lead to more danger in the future. Truman was trying to scare Stalin and the Soviet Union. If he told them about the bomb, then the Soviets would not want to start a war with the United States. Truman wanted to intimidate the Soviets and show them who the more powerful country was. 2. Atomic bombs should never have been used because of the terrible long term impacts they left behind. 3 3. Revenge is not a good reason to drop an atomic bomb on the Japanese. The Japanese government protested the use of an atomic bomb by saying, The bomb in question, used by the Americans, is worse than earlier firebombing. (Doc. J) The new atomic bombs will be more effective than earlier bombs. They will help end the war quicker and bring American men back home safely. If the United States uses the atomic bomb it will kill a lot of people. According U.S. Air Force General Curtis LeMay, over 200,000 people would die. At Pearl Harbor 2,400 Americans died. In response, the U.S. bombed Japan back, killing 120,000 people in Tokyo alone. The U.S. has already gotten its revenge for Pearl Harbor. 3. 4 4. Revenge is not a good reason to drop an atomic bomb on the Japanese. The President of the United States, Harry Truman said, The only language they seem to understand is the one we have been using to bomb them (Doc. H). The Japanese deserve to have a bomb dropped on them because they do not understand anything else. If the U.S. has been using bombs on the Japanese, then the United States has already gotten their revenge. Plus, it is working. There is no need to use a more powerful bomb, too. The people of Japan will never surrender, so the U.S. must use an atomic bomb. The Japanese will not negotiate or find a more peaceful solution to help end the war. 4.
